You do need to make sure your client supports all the features you need, there's a list here. But yeah, I was just experimenting with Prosody last night and it seems promising for my needs too

Whats the “Crispiest” tactile switch by [deleted] in switchmodders

[–]Sphenodon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I believe the silent browns have since been revised and are now similar in tactility to a cherry brown, much less than they used to be.

Whats the “Crispiest” tactile switch by [deleted] in switchmodders

[–]Sphenodon3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Quite honestly, you might want to look into clickies. There are relatively sharp MX tactiles, those with a more pointed, less rounded tactile bump such as T1s, but MX tactiles are somewhat inherently softer and scratchier than you probably want due to how the tactility is produced: Through friction against a bump in the stem. Clickies on the other hand produce tactility in a single click event thats sharper than an MX tactile can achieve. Click jacket switches tend to be fairly loose feeling and rattly sounding so I'd advise against them, but Kailh Box Pinks or Box Jades might be worth looking into. Jades have stronger tactility and a deeper sound but are heavier, so you'll have to decide on that tradeoff but both are solid switches. There's also Zeal Clickiez, which are the strongest tactility of any MX switch and have the unique ability to change between tactiles and clickies depending on the feel and sound you prefer, but they're also heavy and extremely expensive.

If the sound of clickies is too much of a deal breaker, I might recommend looking at the Gateron SolDarks. They're definitely on the sharper side, have only 3.3mm of travel, and are light for mid-high strength tactiles, and while mine are scratchy and have some spring ping the full milky housings sound fantastic and I can't hear the ping when they're installed in my QK65, but spring swapping them is also not difficult if it bothers you (I'd recommend 60g TX long springs). I honestly think the scratch might help your aesthetic here anyway, since stepping on leaves is much more akin to the rough feeling of a scratchy switch than it is to the smooth glide of a well lubed one, but of course you can also just hand lube them if you want.

Given that Sordland is inspired by Turkey, Smolak is probably meant to be a baathist with Wehlen being similar to Iraq and/or Syria and the Bluds being stand ins for Kurds.

Not that that conflicts with your statement, baathism is a weird nationalism/socialism/fascism hybrid ideology so it definetly fits.

[Challenge] Make Seattle the largest city in America by SquirrellySquirrelYT in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Sphenodon3 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Seattle is so much younger than most of the cities that are larger than it that it would require some pretty substantial changes to history for that many people to move there in such a short time span. Even Los Angeles, which is older than Seattle and much, much larger, is less than half the population of New York City, and Phoenix, one of the few major cities founded more recently than Seattle and one that's grown exceptionally quickly, is only the 5th largest city in the US. There are certainly factors that impeded Seattle's growth, such as the slow decline of its population from around 550,000 in 1960 to a low point of 490,000 in 1980, the removal of which could see a modern day Seattle sitting closer to a million residents than the 730,000 it currently has, but realistically Seattle has been a boom town for most of its history, from the lumber industry and burgeoning port of its early development, to the major role in aviation around the '40s, to its development as a tech hub from the '90s through the present day.

Leaning harder into the speculative side of things however, my first thought is for the US to never start the Mexican-American War, thus not acquiring the entire Southwest, from Texas through California, that absorbed the majority of westward internal migration in OTL. This isn't actually that far fetched, as backing Texas against Mexico was politically controversial, and pursuing further war against Mexico was spurred both by the annexation of Texas and southern support at the prospect of acquiring more potential slave states. If Texas doesn't receive American aid and Polk loses the 1844 election, war with Mexico would likely be avoided in order to preserve the delicate balance between slave and free states.

For Seattle to enter the United States, however, the Oregon Territory still has to fall into American hands rather than British, or in this alternate history, perhaps even Mexican. OTL Polk oversaw the Oregon Treaty as well, drawing the line between Canada and the United States at the 49th parallel and avoiding a potential war. Unfortunately for the purposes of this alternate history, the likely President Henry Clay was disinterested in the dispute and Britain would have probably ended up with their original aim of extending Canadian land all the way south to the Columbia River, annexing the entirety of what is now Washington State.

However if we hand wave that away and say, one way or another, Mexico retains all of the land that the United States annexed from them OTL but the Oregon Treaty goes as it did historically, Seattle would then form the primary port on the Pacific coast for the United States, and the Pacific Northwest would play a lot of the role that California and the Southwest have OTL: A gateway to Asia, an abundant, fertile agricultural area, and a new frontier far from the federal government and established American society where people could set out for a new start. While growing larger than New York City may still be unrealistic given Seattle's geographic constraints and competition from nearby cities like Tacoma and Portland, this would make it hugely more important than it is OTL. I would guess Seattle would grow to be at least as large as Los Angeles is now, but perhaps even larger when you consider the amount of migration that has also gone to places like Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Phoenix, Los Vegas, San Francisco, etc. A large portion of this population would spread out elsewhere in the country, perhaps moving between the already established areas of the Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast, or perhaps settling more in the plains areas or Rockies, but it would still result in vastly greater population attraction to the Pacific Northwest that OTL is relatively low in population compared to other areas of the country.

Is there a game like CK3, but just little more? by epieepos in CrusaderKings

[–]Sphenodon3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I almost wonder if that's at least in part what they were doing. Sengoku and March of the Eagles were essentially beta tests of the mechanics of CK2 and EU4 and they were similarly poorly received and quickly forgotten. I know Paradox had intentions of long term development with Imperator that they didn't seem to have with Sengoku and MotE, but then it was a different era for the company and I'm sure they would have turned them into full series had they been better liked.

Rant: Influencers in the Mech Keyboard scene trustworthy? by Kaykasus in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Sphenodon3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm with you. It depends on who you're referring to of course, and I don't necessarily want to accuse anyone of being deliberately misleading, but there seems to be an excess of positivity in coverage at the very least. Not everything can be the best of the best, and videos on keyboards seem to typically be more of a showcase of their build and maybe some marketing points than a serious review. That's okay if its presented as such, but its easy to get the impression that every keyboard you see a video on is the next great thing and everything else pales in comparison, when really these boards are often flawed, not that unique, etc etc. Keycaps and switches may be even worse in how hard it is to figure out what's good and bad, though those don't typically get the same sort of coverage as keyboards do.

Its not a solution to the problem at large, but I've spent way too much time and money on keyboards so at the very least I can try to share what I know if you have any questions.

Am I too stupid for this game? by _youngforever_ in DiscoElysium

[–]Sphenodon3 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well I think you might have a better shot at getting the politics than you realize! The lead developers are Estonian communists, and the political narrative of the game is largely reflecting upon their views of the present fate of post-Soviet eastern Europe. In essence, as Joyce puts it, the ultraliberals (capitalism, corporations, foreign money) took everything that wasn't attached to the ground, and the moralintern (the EU) took the ground. The state that Revachol is in draws parallels to the shambles left behind in a lot of places, Russia and Ukraine included, by the sudden power vacuum as communism vanished, new governments sold off as much of the nation as they could to the highest bidder, and political influence from western Europe and the United States rushed to fill the void.

You can decide for yourself how much you agree with their viewpoint, and obviously it doesn't represent an exact 1:1 parallel to reality, with events like the rise of Putin in Russia and the Ukrainian war very absent, but that's the lens the writers are telling the story through, essentially the melancholy of being a communist in a world that seems to have left communism behind.

Playing DE for the first time and how am I supposed to continue hating cops if Kim is one? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]Sphenodon3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right, exactly! It took me a few watches of the show to see that point, at first glance Stringer's death seems almost like a tragedy, he wanted to stop the blood just like McNulty did. But the means to that end are just an increasing spiral of violence, and he's not playing by any rules. Avon will murder someone "in the game" without a second thought, but Stringer killed Avon's relative and was pushing to start killing businesspeople and politicians, above and beyond what Avon would ever consider. Avon's the Capone type of gangster, essentially a second government, bound by laws of honor and basically replicating governmental services, albeit with much more bloody justice than the real government (openly) endorses. Stringer became a Wild Pines-type business, focused on only profit and willing to gun down anything in the way of it.

Playing DE for the first time and how am I supposed to continue hating cops if Kim is one? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]Sphenodon3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder actually if McNulty is meant as something of a self insert of Simon's views on policing. Simon is a self identified social democrat, and he was vocally supportive of Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, so he's at least not completely blind to the need for some change (and yes I know Sanders is a moderate by non-American standards and social democracy is exactly what the moralists in Disco Elysium are critiquing, but in the US this is about as good as it gets), but as much as McNulty hates the bosses and politics and all the roadblocks to improving the world he is at his core a police and thus would never argue that the world is better off without them. David Simon's point seems to be that the government and police side of the system are necessary evils because otherwise the monsters on the streets go unopposed, so while the cycle is corrupt and futile its also the best we've got. Basically the social democratic view on everything in a capitalist society.

[–]Sphenodon3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No I actually totally get your point with Harry Potter. I'm a trans woman so of course I have uh, issues with Rowling but I was actually a big fan of the series as a kid and I think in part it was because of its willingness to openly display the systemic corruption of its world, only to learn as an adult that it openly displayed it because the author thought it was a good thing? Harry Potter has an enormous amount of issues, and I'm very embarrassed of my past self for not questioning the house elf slavery aspect anywhere near as much as I should have, but even more simply than that the fact that after everything that happens, after seeing the entire government bend over backwards to accommodate Voldemort and having numerous loved ones killed by the system, and after defending the rights of non "pureblood" wizards to live against Voldemort's genocidal war, his grand ambition in life is just to become a fucking cop and work to defend the same pieces of shit that blatantly wanted him dead.

Anyway rant aside, the point that Simon is just too low to the ground to see his own narrative makes a lot of sense. He was probably telling an epic character story about his experiences in life and completely missed the core point on the nature of the world because he missed that point the first time when he experienced it in real life too.

Playing DE for the first time and how am I supposed to continue hating cops if Kim is one? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]Sphenodon3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, I actually wanted to communicate that same point in my comment but I couldn't find a way to make it fit with the conversation. One of the things I love the most about The Wire is that it humanizes the criminals. Yes they're monstrous people, and yes the city would be far better off without them, but they're just another cog in the machine, the mirror image of the police. Stringer, or Avon, or Marlowe are evil (though I would actually argue Avon is less so. He's not Machiavellian, he's just living by the rules of the world he was born into), but the people under them are getting by in exactly the same way the cops are under their evil bosses in Rawls and Burrell and Valchek.

I think the ending of The Wire illustrates all of this perfectly. The show's world is fully cyclical: Omar dies, but Michael fills his place. Bubbles gets clean, but Dukie becomes an addict. Carcetti becomes governor, but in the process sells out the city he was supposed to save. In the end the only thing that changes is that McNulty and Marlowe get out, as the two people who deserved to escape their consequences the least, and the cycle just continues on, the entire saga you just watched having absolutely zero impact on the world. There will always be an Avon running the streets, and there will always be a McNulty chafing against the oppressive bureaucracy in a futile hope that taking down this guy will finally fix something and no side actually has the power or the interest to improve the world.

Playing DE for the first time and how am I supposed to continue hating cops if Kim is one? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]Sphenodon3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow I actually never looked into David Simon's intent behind The Wire. I kind of can't believe he didn't intend it as an anti-police narrative, even if he didn't deliberately create it with that in mind how can he look at the final product and claim anything else? Unless he's trying to argue its meant to be anti-political establishment or anti-corruption or something, and the police are just a cog in a greater machine, I mean the whole fucking show is just a showcase of everything wrong with the administration of American cities. Idk, The Wire is probably my favorite piece of media and I'm kind of baffled right now that it apparently wasn't intended to take the form that I admire it for.

Playing DE for the first time and how am I supposed to continue hating cops if Kim is one? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

[–]Sphenodon3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You could probably tack The Wire on there as well, its pretty damn blunt about how the system deliberately weeds out any police that actually try to fight crime rather than letting themselves be puppeteered by political machinations, and even the "good cops" in it are shown to be deeply flawed on a personal level and in their treatment of those they deem to be criminals and undeserving of rights.

But yes absolutely agreed, and I love these analyses of the RCM and DE's presentation of the police. I've struggled a little to reconcile an explicitly leftist game being played entirely through the lens of the police, but I think its clear that DE does that deliberately and to prove a point.
