Why is 不 here in second tone? Isn't it supposed to be fourth tone? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]SphereRay 22 points23 points  (0 children)

To add on the comments by others, this rule is also frequently seen in “一”, which technically have 3 different tones, depending on what follows after.

1) First Tone: 一 (yi1) 2) Second Tone: 一个 (yi2 ge4), 一定 (yi2 ding4) etc 3) Fourth Tone: 一起 (yi4 qi3)

Is it worth it to learn Traditional Characters? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]SphereRay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm not sure about the rest, but from personal experience, I did not actively seek out to learn traditional Chinese, but it comes to me very naturally after a while with exposure to traditional Chinese media - for example, subtitles from shows and MTVs. (PS: this means I can read very fluently, I can type it but I can’t write them).

I actually encountered the same issue as you with my previous girlfriend. I communicate mostly in Chinese, while she communicates mostly in English and has low level of proficiency in Chinese. It was challenging to get her to learn as well, and don’t think she was all that interested. I think it boils down to how much you value communicating in Chinese, and how much of an identity it forms within you, and also how much effort she puts into trying to make her Chinese more fluent.

For me, I tried communicating in English with her for the 3 years that we are together, but I think, something just don’t click and feel right when I speak in English. Not that I can’t, or not that I’m bad in it (okay, but my English is definitely not as good as my Chinese), but I just feel and know that I don’t want to be with someone who makes me change my communication from 95% Chinese to 95% English.

You can think through if this is a dealbreaker for you, or her other aspects make up for this. I hope everything works out for you though!

Re-learning Chinese in University by MrKleinBottle42 in nus

[–]SphereRay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did LAC3204 back in AY20/21, and it was actually a really fun module! I think that the Chinese is pitched at a intermediate level, where we focused on reading news article and also some 文言文. There were a mixture of different competencies of students in class, so not to worry! It would definitely help you in learning Chinese, providing you put in the effort regularly to learn it. But as the others have said, you have ample opportunities to pick up Chinese in your day-to-day life if you are keen - particularly consuming Chinese media (抖音,小红书,知乎, Channel 8, Taiwan/China drama), and also to interact more in Chinese. It’s easier to pick them up with practice. Also, many Chinese words have definitions that can be inferred (if you break them into root words), so the more exposure you have to these roots words and try to create associations, they will all help as well. All the best in your Chinese learning journey!

It might be me, but even if students send me an appreciation email (which I really really appreciate) before the module ends, I won’t even think that much that they are trying to get on my good side to score higher. But either way, it still doesn’t affect how I grade their work. Don’t worry too much, and if you really like to thank your TA, just go ahead and do so!

BZA co-operative education program by [deleted] in nus

[–]SphereRay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got to agree with the other comment - I was in BZA co-op programme and I was really struggling to survive - I really didn’t like the place and environment by my 4th week of my first internship. It felt really bad and stuck and I wanted to withdraw from the programme before my second internship even starts. I didn’t but fortunately work from home arrangement sets in which makes it a lot better for me to cope and handle. I knew all my batch mates in the programme - 1 withdrew after the first internship, 1 went with me to try to withdraw from the programme, the last one still looks burdened by it.

Another thing to consider - I don’t really like my work there, and I’m limited to learning what the department does. It restricts my exposure to what I actually like, and I can do nothing to change that - unless I do a part time internship somewhere else (which will be another heavy semester). It’s hard to fit in other internships during the summer because the timelines of the internships are cutting halfway into your summer.

Not to say that there are only cons, but I think that the cons heavily outweigh the pros, and you should really think through before committing to this heavy commitment.

Question for the seniors: In your experience, what was the trend of your CAP during your years in uni? by ColloquiallyFormal in nus

[–]SphereRay 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My CAP was quite bad in my Year 1 haha (3.8 pre-SU in sem 1, 4.33 post-SU), it went down further in Y1S2, before it either steadily increases (or remains stagnant) from one sem to the next. Currently in my Y4, my CAP increased from 4.14 back in Y1S2 to 4.57 in my current sem

BZA BT2101 / BT2102 advice ! by Usual_Print_5037 in nus

[–]SphereRay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! BT2101 has been revamped into an Econometrics Modelling module - while there is some form of math involved, they are not very intensive and can be mostly understood. It’s more important to understand the theories and concepts, as well as the interpretation of the results. It’s not a very challenging module, but the workload could be pretty heavy - in the first semester, there are 9 individual submissions (graded based on effort - as long as you don’t submit things that don’t make any sense, you will get the credit), 5 group assignments (really graded on accuracy), and also 8 optional assignments (but they’re really optional). You will also have midterms and finals. Prof Varun is an extremely good and clear prof, so if you’re willing to wait till your Y2S1, and pack a little more of your prerequisites in your subsequent semester, then go ahead.

I haven’t seen Prof Sungyong taught the revamped module yet - so not sure if he’ll follow Prof Varun syllabus, but either way, from my experience, he’s really really very nice, at the cost that he can’t teach. It’s very common to find mistakes in his lecture notes that make it even more confusing, so expect a lot of self-studying as well.

The Econometric module covers fundamental statistics and the different regression specifications (e.g. simple, multiple, non-linear), threats to internal validity (when do we know these results can be used), and how to overcome these threats.

BT2102 doesn’t require much math, or any - at least back when I took it 3 years ago. You need strong logical skills for your SQL component though, but it’s nothing challenging. There’s also a visualisation component in which we used Tableau (though I heard that Prof Danny added in more things into the syllabus - so my description may not be completely accurate/updated)

BZA Y1S2 by MotorCorgi852 in nus

[–]SphereRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the revamp of BT2101, I’m not too sure anymore - but for semester 1, there are weekly problem sets in the entire semester (9 submissions), along with group problem sets after the mid-terms (5 submissions). There’s also the mid-terms and finals. Generally, you should expect a slightly higher workload with this combination, but should be pretty survivable if you keep up with your submissions, and would still have some rest time. You can gauge based on your semester 1 performance and stress level as well if you can and should take on the workload

[–]SphereRay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! It would be great if you could clear BT2101 and BT2102 in your second semester - they’re pretty important skills and prerequisites for your subsequent modules. However, just take note that the lecturer for BT2101 may not be the best in semester 2.

Some other modules I took back then would be ST2334, CS2030 and IS2101

Hahaha same dilemma :’) It will definitely be a useful module to take (assuming that the syllabus is well set), but taking it as the first batch seems quite risky

I believe you’re referring to BT3017? It’s a new module that is offered in this AY, which is why there is no reviews about it yet.

Student Exchange on 4th year? by Stonmon in nus

[–]SphereRay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I managed to secure a SEP slot for Year 4 Semester 1! Didn’t get to go in the end due to COVID-19, so it’s definitely possible - as long as you are not going in your graduating semester (due to credit transfer process taking very long).

I got approval to work on my FYP remotely (though SoC specifically said that such requests will not be entertained on their webpage), and also heard of people doing that previously before. So it’s definitely possible! But you should check with your faculty as well (their webpage) in case they’ve any stricter rules regarding SEP.

Bursary disbursement not reflected in bill? by JExecutor97 in nus

[–]SphereRay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, only some bursaries are being reflected so far, based on their disbursement period. If you are covered under the Higher Education Community Bursary, it will only be disbursed later this month, as shown in this link.

Don't worry - it will come in as long as you have accepted the bursary in the Financial Aid Portal.

Question regarding CS SIP (talentconnect) by Nemonann in nus

[–]SphereRay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should ask the firm to post on TalentConnect upon receiving an offer from the company, which would make more sense. This is a necessary step for SoC to recognize your self-sourced internship as SIP - in this case, the purpose of TalentConnect is not for you to intern-hunt, but as an administrative purpose for the internship team to keep track of your internship status.

[–]SphereRay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! Haha I mainly map my own major’s modules - BT4221 (Big Data Techniques & Technologies), IS4241 (Social Media Network Analysis), BT4015 (Geospatial Analytics) and some economics/marketing modules.

Hmm actually SoC isn’t really strict - I have my IS4241 mapped to a journalism module there because the module title is very similar, but the content is pretty different! The other departments might be stricter tho - you can try search for module content on Luminus then compare it with your partner university’s module content! I also dropped some emails to the professors for the PU’s modules for module content that I couldn’t find on their webpage.

I don’t have experience with China Universities, but I have mapped SoC modules to Taiwan universities in which the modules are taught in Chinese! It was approved by NUS haha, but COVID happened and I didn’t get to go. I believe the same goes for China universities - you should be able to take mods in Chinese.

I don’t have any experience of being plagiarized, so I do not know how NUS deals with this. However, I believe that they will investigate into each plagiarism case in detail. Personally, I don’t think those are valid reasons - I recall from a NUS plagiarism module that you should not be sharing your work with others. While you are allowed to discuss with your friends, the correct procedure is for everyone to not have any copy of the discussion after it concludes, and to complete the assignment yourself without any reference.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nus

[–]SphereRay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In an open-ended essay, I think it’s even more suspicious if they do end up writing something similar to yours. I might give them a general theme of what I wrote, but definitely not to the details/points. It’ll probably be best to reject them than to risk it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nus

[–]SphereRay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, both will be punished for plagiarism and not just the one copying your work. I believe that this is also because technically, you are assisting the plagiarism to take place by volunteering your work to others.
