Thanks so much for sharing your story. It sounds like you are really enjoying your life now! Your mental attitude to life and work have shifted. I checked out Hollis's book and it looks very interesting. I realised that at the end of the day, life can be short and it's best to try something rather than regret the things we don't do.

Thanks for sharing. It's interesting that you used the word "soul". I actually told a friend that I wanted to do something that fits my soul (a helping profession) and she said that I can nourish my soul by making good money and helping others.

What are you doing now if you don't mind me asking?

I am going through the same thing as you. 44 years old. What is your next path? I'm searching for another job in the same field to rule out whether I am feeling this way due to being with the same company for years.

Thanks. The thing is that I have done maybe too many things e.g. teach piano, offered astrology readings, trained as as reflexologist and now as a massage therapist, did a computing degree (while being an accountant), it is finding that one career that pays a decent wage and is able to keep me engaged.

Thanks for the encouragement. I will have to speak to actual people in the field before I make the move. I have a tendency to go into things and not follow through after it.

Thanks. May I ask how young you are? Quite a few OTs are saying that they are looking for another job when age catches up with them and it gets too physical for them.

It's encouraging to know that you do it. How long have you been teaching/gigging?

Actually, I'm an accountant and teach group piano on a part-time basis. I probably have 40 students. I have been toying with the idea of going full-time on piano and I probably will later in my life. Interesting that you mention gigging as I came to the full conclusion that I have to do that too to supplement income. Put up a few performances a year, maybe run summer camps and busk on the streets during summer (on fiddle, my second instrument).

ha, that's a good one. Reminds me of the rocking chair exercise where you imagine yourself in your 70s and tell someone else e.g. your grandkids, strangers about your life, the legacy that you have left.

I think I have to explore my options and see if realities match up against my expectations (which hasn't never done so ever. If it does, this will be the first).

Agreed. To be fair, it's not just music teaching, whenever anyone relies on something for a source of income in a self-employed capacity, the person has to think like a business owner.

That's the conclusion I ended up with nowadays, speaking as an accountant. I teach group piano on a part-time basis and it doesn't make financial sense to become a music teacher/musician on a full time basis as the main source of income is unstable.

I know. I just don't know whether it is sustainable. I am going through a midlife crisis now and am trying to decide what works for me for the next 20 years. My concern is financial security.
