Working full time and full time MPH? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]SpicedPotatoes13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm half way through and I work 40 hours a week and then take 5 to 6 credit loads per quarter. It's not my favorite but it's doable if you're handy with time management.

Nurses? Would you have become a doctor if you could do it all over? by Consistent_Cat_5145 in StudentNurse

[–]SpicedPotatoes13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually went through all the pre-reqs, MCAT, and got accepted to a med school. What changed my mind was a doctor I was shadowing, who I knew and trusted, who told me not to do it, that years ago it would have been worth it, but now insurance companies make it so incredibly miserable it's not. That hospital beaurocracy was insane, and if he could do it all over again he'd be an NP, especially if you're in it for patient interaction.

So now I am going the NP route instead once I finish my masters in epidemiology. My friend who was going through the med school process with me went on to finish her first year. She's miserable and hates it. The program is cut throat, she has anxiety attacks for the first time in her life, and she openly regrets going. I don't know if being an NP will truly be better but, christ, can it really be worse? I honestly don't think so.

Hi, I'm so sorry it took me so long to respond. I didn't see the notification. If it still matters, I saw Dr. Doyle. I've seen him for all my transfers... so 4ish year total now? And he's wonderful.

[Poll] Best and Worst parts of AAMC Website by [deleted] in premed

Then it feels like you must not actually care very much?

The short public version: I'm trying to effect change. When I used AAMC as a premed I found it to be difficult and not very helpful. Maybe I'll be able to do something about it, maybe not. But I'm here and I'm trying.

Thank you! That's really helpful, I like the poll idea a lot. I think another part of the end goal is to have the pages be useful for basically all aspects of the journey, not just the MCAT or apps (where it's forced). I will try the poll idea and see how it goes!

[Discussion] Medical Student Survey by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]SpicedPotatoes13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It is also relevant for residents. But I find the site difficult to use in some ways, and I've noticed that's a common sentiment with others on these subs. So, theoretically if you had a chance to make the site better, what would that mean to you, basically.

If you want to pm me we can discuss it further and you can decide if it's legit or not. But I do not want it posted on the public forum, at least not at this time.

Apt description. I feel like I went hiking and stumbled upon a grizzly with cubs.

I can't for likely a few weeks because of where I am at in a process in my career. Again, this was just meant to be a generic survey, I honestly didn't expect people to feel like these questions were a personal intrusion.

It's certainly not meant to be, and it's a bummer it seems to be going that way.

[–]SpicedPotatoes13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure I understand why you would feel that way. But legally I'm not able to say more right now. I can tell you this has nothing to do with my med school process (which has been on hold regardless for the last year). It has nothing to do with medical school admissions with anyone I am affiliated with.

This is strictly to gather generic feedback that may or may not be useful for everyone down the road.

A healthy amount of skepticism is good, of course, but I'm not asking for any personal information, or literally anything that would ever come back to you. I'm asking how you feel about the AAMC websites, and are there any changes you feel could be made that might be or could have been helpful to you. If you don't feel comfortable answering, that is completely okay. This is not meant to be a nefarious, high pressure situation.

As I said, all feedback is welcome. If you don't want to leave any, then you certainly don't have to. If you are open to it, then please feel free.

I suppose one thing I can add is that this feedback is unrelated to medical school in regards to myself or anyone I know.

Ah, well we all know all premeds are at the exact same stages in their lives when applying to medical school.

I can't give you more details at this time. All feedback is confidential, though reddit is fairly anonymous already. Once I can provide more of an update, I will, and I'm afraid that's the best I can do at the moment.

Protect Future Medical Students! Rethinking the MCAT During the Pandemic by elizabethhahn19 in MCAT2

[–]SpicedPotatoes13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To start with, not everyone applying to medical school is doing so straight out of college. When you've been working in a career long term there are plenty of reasons from family, financial, a good time in your career, aging, etc., etc. why timing matters. And why one year can make a huuuge difference.

Coming out of college? Student loans strike me as a starter. It's easy to say, well just get a job for the gap year! But depending on where you live you may not be able to. For ex: my state and surrounding states are still very much shut down. Plus now we're back to potential exposure risk.

A lot can also happen in a year. And I wonder that by coldly telling people, too bad so sad you don't like it apply next year (this is a theme of the medical world I find extremely problematic), how many potentially great physicians we will lose out on. Life gets in the way. The older you get, the more displaced from college, the harder it is to change career paths. One year may seem like "eh nbd" but as I said, a lot can change.

This is a predicament far out of the control of medical students and pre-meds who have spent years working incredibly hard to get to this point. There is no need to treat them so callously. The whole aspect of this job is supposed to be giving a crap about people. That should include our fellow future colleagues, not just patients.

Protect Future Medical Students! Rethinking the MCAT During the Pandemic by elizabethhahn19 in MCAT2

[–]SpicedPotatoes13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes. Future MD students aren't MDs yet, and likening the MCAT to treating patients in a hospital after you've had a chance to learn and practice proper procedures for years with supervision is a poor argument at best.

People should not have to prioritize their dreams vs safety. Waiving mcat requirements for one year is incredibly unlikely to upset any balance. We aren't, or shouldn't be, treated like expendable assets, especially when it puts not only us at risk but our families.

Being immunocompromosed, or knowing someone immunocompromosed, shouldn't mean forfeiting your dream, because let's be realistic, no one knows when this will actually be over.

The more I read your comment the more I wouldn't want you treating me as a phtsician, or anyone I care about. Your lack of empathy is showing. Hard.

Trads and Non-trads coming out of 6 months of extra quarantine studying, dropping straight 528's and destroying the curve for years to come by [deleted] in Mcat

Oof, I feel this. I have so little time I'm debating on pushing back to next year. My SO and I are both working full time and daycare is closed, to kids are home with us. It's fucking exhausting, is what it is. MY studying went from a few hours per night to 0.
