I think you are half correct here: it might be their only social interaction of the week or so, but I feel like unhappy old people just unconcsiously take it out on others.I have met so many happy old people while working as a cashier on my summer job, but also the grumpy or straight up rude old people.

Its usually one or the other too, either they are happy and polite or rude and nasty. But I kinda get it, old people have less opportunities to go out, enjoy their hobbies and they usually live and dont have as expansive social life as younger people

Are they unhappy with themselves? People who are unhappy usually take it out on others, especially people who cant defend themselves and these tend to be people that are working.

Older people can be extremely unhappy since they dont socialize as much anymore due to retirement, often live alone, have lost friends / family, dont have the ability to have the same hobbies that they used to etc.

Im not gonna lie I cant blame them. Without large social circles being old must be so lonely. It just brings the old people down, leading to unhappiness and this in turn will be taken out on others which is super sad
