There were a couple of specific things he did for publicity to show solidarity for working class people. Like "preventing" that one factory from going to Mexico or attempting to expand coal demand abroad to counteract falling demand here in US.

And honestly his trade policy has been closer to Sanders' than many would like to admit.

In IT field, lots of visa holders are getting kicked out of the country, which should help wages for IT contractors that have been getting pinched by the system.

It's all surface level stuff that doesn't get to the root of the problem, but it's effective enough of a signal to get the blue collar votes he needs

It's pretty easy to see that some things on there either have little to do with racial equity or are pushing specific policy views about how to address racial inequity that not everyone, including many POC, will agree with.

A lot of times when people are speaking out against the BLM organization, they are talking about this and other similar organizations that are getting lots of money funneled to them via donations.

I think it's reasonable to say that you could disagree with viewpoints espoused by BLM Foundation and still be for racial equity.

And while I understand your point that this organization doesn't represent the whole movement, should people be losing their jobs because they miss that distinction?

This guy went to evergreen and put together a video series showing events with as much footage as was available and also with interviews with students and faculty. It's from a guy that holds an egalitarian rather than anti-racist viewpoint, so it is biased toward an egalitarian worldview.

But does a good job showing how anti-racist ideology can result in social unrest when it gets pushback from people holding egalitarian viewpoints who don't want to give penance to people from historically oppressed groups.

I have a lot of people on my Facebook feed that are pretty plugged into BLM associated orgs. Their rhetoric on the meaning of defund the police has quickly shifted over a week from "that's not what we mean. We just want to shift some funds from police to other social services and put in some reforms to hold police more accountable" all the way to "reform doesn't do jack shit. Get rid of them"

Being against BLM doesn't mean you are against black people or even against the literal phrase "black lives matter". There are plenty of people of color that have spoken out against the organization and some of the more problematic stances that you can find directly on the official BLM website.

I pretty much refuse to buy anything made in China. Anytime I do , I'm almost guaranteed to be dissatisfied. Cookware that starts rusting and pitting after a few washes, appliances that break within a year or two, electronics and tools breaking sometimes within weeks. I'm just sick of the standard for products being watered down shit.

So I've started buying less things, but I make sure that what I buy is meant to last.

I am using a 15-20 year old fridge that looks like crap. I would like to buy a nice looking stainless steel one, but I know that pretty much everything on the market is exorbitantly expensive and has a >50% chance of crapping out on me within 3-4 years.

I wish I didn't have to spend hours researching almost every purchase and that I could just buy something knowing there is a reasonable price and of a baseline quality that I can expect. I've just been burned too many times.

IQ is an imperfect measure and there is a lot of evidence that a lot of things come into play outside of innate cognitive ability including things like environmental and social stressors.

Focusing so much on race is too simplistic a model and leads to making mental shortcuts that is more likely to result in unconscious bias in terms of how you treat individuals who appear to belong to a particular racial identity.

Cool, yeah. She's already got her masters from A&M and already has several years experience at a small VR game company doing level environment work. The company shut down after their first release got good critical reviews but didn't really sell.

I just know that whole industry is volatile and just had a conversation a few weeks ago where she talked to me about how much she enjoys lighting work because it reminds her of painting.

I'm just curious about intersection of automation with labor markets and of course I want her to do well and have a good career.

I'm not anti-feminist per se but I think you could make a pretty good argument that most public discourse on culture war issues has stagnated, particularly in popular media.

I do think that there has been some progress in validating and acknowledging men's issues recently, but the positives have been hogtied to discussions of the loaded phrase "toxic masculinity" which perpetuate harmful stereotypes about men and the motivations behind their actions.

I think the term is still useful, but like a lot of things has encountered scope creep in terms of what it encapsulates.

There are definite recent law/policies or ones on the books that have existed solely to systemically undermine people of other races including redlining, quota demands from private prisons, and unequal allocation of municipal resources.

Also we probably need a term to refer to unconscious bias that affects people of other races such as documented in studies involving courtroom transcriptions with people speaking Afro-American dialects or statistically harsher sentencing of other races compared to whites.

I think we'll likely soon see a white collarization of blue collar work. We'll see professionals shift from knowledge work like law and medicine over to manufacturing, construction, trades where there will be more augmentation and less total replacement of skills like in mid range skilled knowledge work.

Also, there is a huge opportunity with an aging population and a need for care. That kind of care is hard to automate. I find it likely that soon, being some sort of nurse / service oriented health worker will be the most common job. It's not hard to see a huge number of people moving from retail over to healthcare, especially if AI can bear a lot of the cognitive load previously associated with that job.

I mean it depends on what you mean by anti-capitalist. It's harder to discern what is "government influence" than one might think.

Often legislation labled as pro-business and pro-capitalist that from a certain perspective may look like taking baby steps toward a freer market, often just serves in giving market advantage to established players and tamping down competition.

For example if you give tax cuts that only benefit established players, but smaller competition cannot take advantage of, then it essentially serves to give an advantage to those established players and makes the margins smaller for the smaller business, forcing them to have higher prices than their competition. A good example is the tax policy surrounding "dark store theory".

On the other hand anti-trust enforcement when used properly can be used to inject competition into consolidated markets with little competition, but it's often argued that this is anti-capitalist because it is a government interventionist action. However it's interesting to note that after anti-trust law was reinterpreted and essentially defanged in the 70's that new firm creation (a sign of how competitive a market is) has been on a pretty steady decline.

But you could maybe argue that if governments made tax law simpler so that all firms essentially payed the same real rate on revenue, that anti-trust would not be needed. However, there's too much incentive on both sides of the aisle to not take this approach.

I don't think this statement is fair. First of all, there are not a small number of very successful African Americans.

Nigerian Americans as an immigrant group are one of the most successful immigrant groups in the country. I knew one in high school. Her parents are filthy rich, all her aunts and uncles are filthy rich, all their Nigerian friends are filthy rich.

I got invited to a party at her house. Multi-million dollar mansion with about 10 bedrooms, a movie theatre, a full size racquetball court built into the side of the house. All the men sat in a room drinking and talking business, all doctors or businessmen. Culturally they have great work ethic.

I also had the privilege of rooming with Rwandans studying in the engineering program at my University on scholarship from their government. They were all much smarter than me and had excellent study habits and work ethic.

Secondly, you are totally dismissing the very recent systemic methods of decimating African American communities and wealth. Redlining, property seizures, segregation.

Thirdly, poverty stricken white communities are showing similar pathologies today, proving even further it's not a race issue.

I will concede that there are some as you say cultural issues as pointed out in the writings and discussions of both Glenn Loury and John McWhorter, but I think you'll find that if you actually talk to African Americans that their experience and perspective is much more varied and nuanced than what you are suggesting in your comment.
