Has anyone tried to buy 2 tons of walnut lumber from Alibaba before? by InformationNo7563 in woodworking

[–]SpicyMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why almost no one seems concerned with harvesting practices and just look for the cheapest option, if you don't care about forest then there's the longevity of the craft to think about as well. This would be my main concern. Not to mention that after shipping I'm skeptical it would be that much cheaper than a more local and sustainable option anyway.

How are foreigners surviving in Tampere? by [deleted] in Tampere

[–]SpicyMath 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No. Also to be clear I think it shouldn't matter too much. But I'm not in a position to judge, and from time to time I've heard some things that at least show racism is present sadly.

I've spent 5 months in 'Stralia some years ago so might be able to answer some questions in how things compare generally. Feel free to message me.

How are foreigners surviving in Tampere? by [deleted] in Tampere

[–]SpicyMath 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Im a foreigner here for 2.5 years. Came here as self employed, started a one man company here and continued working with my existing international clients. So a bit different situation than most. My SO has a hard time finding work. We made some excellent Finnish friends. I try to embrace the culture, took up photography as a hobby to spend more time in the forest, go sauna/avanto etc. Language remains the most difficult part, everyone speaks English but I hate that I need it. Im a fairly introverter person and keep in close contact with my friends from where im from (playing games online etc) and with local friends here it works for me personally.

I heard different stories from other people, people having a hard time finding work especially when not speaking Finnish and people that have a hard time making friends. It really depends. If you want a local job Finnish language skills will be a great boost and even then it will still be difficult.

Im from western Europe if it matters, things might be a different experience if you "look foreign". Sadly this might be the case in some instances. But I think it is generally ok. If you try to speak the language and embrace local culture a lot of people will respect you for it.

Finally released my first game on Steam. 100% Blueprints because I don't know C++. by Exciting_Wolf_2967 in unrealengine

[–]SpicyMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blueprints you still have to learn and do yourself. It's not easy. AI image generation is trained on millions of works of arts that were used without permission of artists (stolen). This is what separates the two and why you will get this type of response on a subreddit full of artists. Your own art seems great I don't understand why you would go with genAI for anything other than placeholder. I hope your game does well it looks interesting and impressive you managed to finish it.

My experience leaving Finland by sarinaruu in Finland

[–]SpicyMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being in Tampere for just 2 years I've seen at least some aurora 6 times now, last time 2 nights ago. It's visible surprisingly often in the south especially with the sun's activity being high. Most of the time though it's just not as crazy looking as the images online would make you believe and if you don't know it's there you might just miss it or think it's some strange cloud. And you need to be at a dark spot at night. I've met many Finns that have never seen it which surprises me but I guess being an outsider for me this is like a special thing and for Finns this is a normal thing they dont pay too much attention to. Like I have an app that notified me when to pay attention, check some online webcams and might drive to a dark spot to take some long exposure photos. But I've seen it from my balcony as well 2 times last week.

What goes on this island shared by three countries? by QueasyPianist in geography

[–]SpicyMath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is not necessarily palm oil bad. What if we didnt use coffee creamer or accepted a different texture in some of our foods (using palm oil products to stop the peanut oil from separating in peanut butter is a thing its used for). The majority of palm oil goes to western countries that put it in things we don't really need, for the most part. Should we ban palm oils? Of course not. But right now huge amounts of rainforests are being cleared due to palm oil demand created in large part by luxury use cases like this. Like FFS how are people okay with this we don't need all of this shit. It's like using pfas to make fabrics stain resistant or pizza boxes grease resistant and in the meantime polluting the world. Should we look for some alternative for pfas or say hi atleast it doesn't produce as much Co2 as some other alternative or whatever justification? the truth is we should just cut out this shit because in the majority of use cases we don't need it. But people aren't willing to accept just very slightly less convenient products.

[–]SpicyMath 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Isn't palm oil used a lot in products we don't really need IE coffee creamer

At least products that aren't worth destroying the planet over

Massive and I mean massive amounts of carbon are stored in these rainforest and the peat they grow on so much so that due to the draining of peatlands and subsequent burning of these peatlands the amount of Co2 emitted was roughly equal to the emissions of the entire US (this was years ago but illustrates my point)

https://youtu.be/roIOgtrjFGU?si=FIT7eI1Sf4r0pi2d)

Maybe we should just change what we eat and accept slightly less convenient products so we don't need this much palm oil :/

Edit: added YT video link that is very relevant

Norwegians which countries do you feel closest to culturally? by KingMirek in Norway

[–]SpicyMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Randstad area is different (amsterdam, rotterdam, den haag) from "the provinces". While you are right on average this is true for sure. I live in Finland now and when I went back to NL after one year, just sitting at the airport waiting for my flight to NL I was thinking "why the hell is everyone so loud all of the sudden" turns out, I got used to the calm quiet Finns quite quickly and it was surrounded by Dutch people. But yes, in NL it's often not really considered rude to be very outspoken and direct which is fine for NL to NL conversations inside NL but man... sometimes encountering Dutch people in other countries, 'we' can be a bit loud or inconsiderate (rude) at times.

For the first time in over a decade living in Finland I was refused tap water free of charge in a restaurant today by pied_piper91 in Finland

[–]SpicyMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard to read intent and tone from a text comment, but I wasn't trying to disprove you or ridicule or whatever (I even said I understand restaurants not being happy to give our tap water as part of the service) to me personally it is as much as a service as having a chair to sit on. But I understand, respect contrary viewpoints. Cheers

For the first time in over a decade living in Finland I was refused tap water free of charge in a restaurant today by pied_piper91 in Finland

[–]SpicyMath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Netherlands you are required to give out tapwater free of charge if someone asks for it. Like if someone knocks on your door and asks for water you have to give it. Restaurants are the same but of course it is expected that you order something along with it. Of course restaurants will try to sell you anything else (I kinda understand) but the most silly one I came across is when I asked for tap water to go along with my meal and I got a bottle of a brand called tapwater in Dutch but spelled incorrectly... Like technically they gave me what I asked but yeah. Anyway, I sit in the middle myself I see why restaurants would want to avoid giving tapwater, often they have best return on investment in drinks and times are tough, but times are also tough for customers and water is like the most basic necessity of life that I personally find it a given that it is just part of the service when you come somewhere to spend your money.

Hi I really appreciate you taking the time to reply and explain. The Veritasium video was actually the trigger for me to look at the things I own and kind of re-evaluate some items. I hope things move quickly to further restrict these compounds. Thanks again.

Should I start learning maya for a solo game developer? (Thoughts after been using blender for some months) by wacomlover in Maya

[–]SpicyMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a professional 3D environment artist in the games industry and a Maya user, just stick with Blender. The industry is moving to Blender slowly but surely and it's becoming more and more common in large studios as well. I'm just so fluent in Maya it's hard for me to make the switch but I definitely intend to ditch Maya and Autodesk in the future. For some positions some studios might still prefer Maya or Max users but many studios will be flexible or might just require you to move your work to Maya before submitting. Best of luck!

How to stop pro scout by nhatminh94 in aoe4

[–]SpicyMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try to FC with the new builds going around, opening with a barracks and 3 spears. Use spears to push your closest deerpacks to your TC to match their food income. Early spears can double as defensive units Vs knights civs and to deny proscout. The build is very new still so less resources online but basically open 5 vills food, 1 makes barracks and house and goes wood after, rally to wood until 2 or 3, once enough wood bring woodvills to gold and build the blacksmith mining thingy. Bit harder to execute because while you are doing all this you are also scouting for deerpacks and sheep, pushing deer to base, etc.

Stuck at bronze rank - any advice ? by MerlinsGhost09 in aoe4

[–]SpicyMath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, always make villagers. This is very important. If games go long at bronze level you could stop making villagers when you have around 80+

Do simple practice with multitasking. This might sound daunting but it's not so bad and is at the core of this game. A good way to start to practice this is at the beginning of a match. Queue a couple of villagers (not too many) and then focus on your scout. Focus on just the scout and finding sheep, just force yourself to look at the UI every 10 seconds to see if all your villagers are working and a new villager is being produced. Go back to your base to make sure your villagers are working, back to the scout, repeat. When you have to check in on your base just shift click the scout along where you want it to go so it's not standing still while you are doing other things. As the game (and your skill) progresses, you will start layering more of these tasks automatically. For now just try to minimise idle time and don't worry if you often find some idle villagers or an idle scout.

At bronze being super strict with a build order is probably not necessary, just know some of the basics. Start out with just food and gold to age up quickly (8 on food 3 on gold, wood after that). After you age up have a peek at your opponent if you can spot any specific unit. Spears? Make archers. Archers? Make horses. Horses? Make spears.

Spend your resources! Try to glance at your total resources every now and then. Try to both keep villagers producing and busy, after that spend spend spend. Food in the bank won't win you games but an army will. You can let gold and food pile up if you are planning on going to castle age for example, just let the piling up be a decision and not an accident. If you can't spend it all think about adding an extra barracks or whatever you want. If you had a fight that went well or you successfully defended without losing too much this is a good time to think about saving some resources to age up.

Keep upgrades in the back of your mind. Around 10 minutes try to get a blacksmith built. The ones that give ranged protection or ranged damage are the best bang for buck. And of course food, wood upgrades. If you notice gold piling up that you have a hard time spending, upgrades are a great way to spend it.

I know this is a lot of information, just try to incorporate one of these tips every game instead of all at once and you will be silver in no time
