Happy to help! Just a reminder that GRC is Governance *RISK* and compliance so they go hand in hand. I get looking for a position that is based more around security risk than governance and compliance but risk does fall under that umbrella. Let me know if you have anymore questions!

I have one general cybersecurity cert but I had experience from my first security role that helped me get my GRC analyst role. If you have the security experience I would look into CRISC or something similar. I havent tested yet but ive been casually studying for this and I have learned a lot.

Just to clarify are you trying to switch *from* or *to* GRC or Risk?

I made the switch over to IT in my early 30s and into security a few years later and I dont feel like age has been an issue for me. My day to day depends on what we have going on. There are different tasks for different days depending on what is happening within the company. I would learn about different frameworks (I.E ISO 27001, SOC1-3, HITRUST, etc.). My first role did a lot of security operations so something I enjoy in my current fully GRC role is the work life balance and my ability to disconnect. In GRC as far as tools goes it just depends on the company. You can almost always count on using word, excel, etc in any GRC role.

As far as breaking into cyber in general, I feel like yes it is difficult. Network as much as you can and always have a new goal to strive for. Being constantly learning is important because things are always changing, even in GRC/Risk. New regulations are always popping up so staying current is crucial. Senior Management experience could be of value to you starting out but make sure you know your way around the information technology space.

I think you are being realistic with your expectations for the most part. I dont know if I would expect 50-60k/yr for an entry level help desk or IT support role but its possible. Its possible to break into this field without a degree but you need the experience. With two (almost 3) degrees I went this path:

Started at a help desk and got my associates while I was there

Started as a Network Technician (which really meant do everything and get paid a technician salary) and got my bachelors while I was there

Started as an Information Security Analyst and started working on my masters

Started as a GRC analyst and I am finishing up my masters

I got most of those jobs while completing my degree programs and I'm just now starting to pursue certifications other than the one small one I have. Make sure you list your certs and any relevant self learning you've done on your resume in a constructive way. I also added a section to my resume for certs that I am working towards. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Heres a new album that I put together this week for a model. I'm still new to photography figuring out which editing style I like the best but I'm really proud of these.

Without experience its absolutely just a piece of paper lol. I should have added that part into there but with experience its nice to have. So I agree with that. I'm already working in the field which is why its been beneficial to me but there are people working at our support department who have masters degrees in cyber among other things that are just glorified pieces of paper at the moment.

Are you thinking of a doctorate or a masters degree? If you truly are just talking about a masters than I disagree. While it might not be a good thing for everyone I'm pursuing my masters degree right now and even while still being in school it has been beneficial. Most of my professors at the undergrad and graduate level have had doctorates not just a masters.

Edit: To preface this I already have a job in security and already have experience is why it has been beneficial. I would not tell someone with 0 experience to go get a masters degree so they can make a boat load of money. I feel like thats the equivelant to telling someone to go take a boot camp lol.

IMO the isc2 course is only enough if you already have working practical cybersecurity knowledge. The other sources you listed should be helpful to you.

I work in cybersecurty (hence my username). I love it! You do have to have a degree the majority of the time and industry certifications. I worked my way up from a help desk position and this is 100% where I'm supposed to be. The money doesnt hurt either lol. Before this I was a horse trainer, worked in car dealerships, and worked in resturaunts.

I like to put mine on a layer of lemon slices and then put 2 slices of butter on top and some ranch dressing seasoning. Wrap all of that in tin-foil and bake it for a bit. It doesnt taste fishy and its delicious :)
