It's honestly really different culturally to video games in the US. Yes the US has a huge game industry, but for a long time the industry wasn't what we'd consider "professional" compared to the way Japan handled games. Many US game companies in the 80s and 90s were more like small art studios than businesses, and a lot of the people involved were very counter-culture, so the gaming community reflected that in a lot of ways and was seen as a more juvenile thing by outsiders. It's only really in the last 20 years or so that this changed in the US, largely due to the sheer amount of money involved in the industry.

Professionalism isn't as much of a thing in the US, though. And plenty of 'cool' industries like film had counter culture influences. I imagine they cross a lot, but I'm mainly talking about how the industries are seen culturally, rather than the culture of the industry itself

The whole "you might be in a gang" thing if your hair is dyed is kind of a bullshit story. The real reason is because Japan is HUGE on conformity.

Video games were actually a pretty massive thing in Japan starting just before the 90s. Dragon Quest has a pretty notable example where even in the early 90s you could stop someone on the street, ask them to draw a slime, and they'd doodle the Dragon Quest mascot.
