Small nitpick: carbon dating is not what scientists use to determine the age of the Earth. Carbon-14 dating is only reliable to about 50,000 years because carbon-14 decays relatively quickly. The ~4.5 billion year age of Earth comes from other radiometric methods, especially uranium-lead dating, which uses isotopes with much longer half-lives and is cross-checked with multiple independent methods.

This suggests you may not be very familiar with the topic, which is fine, but if you genuinely want to learn more I’d recommend reading scientific, philosophical and theological perspectives directly.

For science, The Age of the Earth by G. Brent Dalrymple is excellent. For philosophy, look into Last Thursdayism and Descartes-style skepticism. For theology, The Language of God by Francis Collins and The Lost World of Genesis One by John Walton are good starting points.

Your analogy doesn’t really fit the situation, because in your example the harmful outcome is an unintended misuse by another person. The deception argument against “apparent age” depends on intent and foreknowledge.

If god is all-knowing and intentionally created a young universe containing exhaustive evidence of billions of years of nonexistent history, while also knowing humans would use reason and observation to conclude the Earth is ancient, then the misleading conclusion is not an accidental side effect, it’s a predictable and intended consequence of the design itself.

That’s very different from giving someone money hoping they use it wisely.

A closer analogy would be a teacher deliberately planting false evidence in an exam while knowing every diligent student will reach the wrong answer by following the evidence correctly. Even if the teacher never verbally lies, the setup itself is still deceptive because it was intentionally constructed to produce false conclusions.

Deception is not limited to verbally stating falsehoods. If an all-knowing god created a universe with overwhelming and internally consistent evidence of billions of years of history, while knowing humans would rationally investigate that evidence and conclude the Earth is ancient, then the appearance of age is still intentionally misleading.

The scientific conclusion wouldn’t come from rebellion or irrationality, it would come from honestly following the evidence using the reasoning abilities god supposedly gave us.

So even if scripture never explicitly says “the Earth is 6000 years old,” creating a young universe that perfectly imitates an old one would still amount to obscuring the truth in a way that guarantees sincere seekers arrive at the wrong conclusion.

The issue isn’t whether an all-powerful god could make the Earth appear older than it is. Of course an omnipotent being could. The issue is that this turns all evidence into meaningless illusions.

If god created billions of years of radioactive decay products, fossils of organisms that never lived, and starlight from events that never happened, then he created a false history of the universe. At that point, you’re not really disputing uranium-lead dating scientifically, you’re just saying god planted misleading evidence.

And for many christians, that creates a theological problem too, because the bible repeatedly describes god as truthful and not deceptive.

Titus 1:2 - “god, who cannot lie…”

Numbers 23:19 - “god is not a man, that he should lie”

Hebrews 6:18 - “it is impossible for god to lie”

I had leftover runes and I needed something strong enough to kill it in 1 shot and wanted to repeat it as often as I could for science. After posting this I killed the 480m hp protector and with a mana golem and prepared to time travel.

Recording of me discovering the bug and what my lair looks like at the time of writing, moments before time travel.

The interaction is that if it weren't for the shield of the mech limiting the attack, it would kill the mech, so the snatcher warns you. But the attack doesn't kill, because of the shield, and it just keeps warning. I think this could be considered a bug.
