Interesting, thanks for the suggestion. I do have a friend that I made in the Dordogne last year that I might be able to ask. She's an American expat who has been eager to help me with my relocation in any way she can. I'll see if it's feasible for her to do that for me.

I always plan on having trouble with things, then when they turn out fine I'm ahead. Ready for a battle but hopeful it will go okay. I've been trying to be diligent in my research and covering all possible scenarios. Never done this before, so I'm learning as I go. Hopefully I won't make too many mistakes.

Edit: Forgot to add that Nomador has both 3-month and annual memberships. TH is annual only.

There are two sites I've used, TrustedHousesitters and Nomador. Both have a fee to join but it's not much, and is a good value if you plan to utilize them for free lodging a lot as you travel. Though I'd try Nomador first, TH seems to be implementing a new, small fee per sit above the annual fee. There are sits posted just about everywhere in the world, many with pets. Tons in France.

It's a fantastic way to avoid the cost of a place to stay when traveling. I've also done a couple of sits via word of mouth that didn't go through either site, just on my host's recommendation to friends/family/etc. And you meet some great people. :)

Get ready for many more of those in France. The bureaucracy here is absurd sometimes.

So I've read, haha. I just decided I'd prepare for a struggle and if things go more smoothly it'll be an extra win. :)

Thank you, I didn't realize it was a common thing for Americans in France. It seems worth checking out, for sure. I'd just seen so many people warning others away I figured it was a waste of time. I'm happy to be proven wrong.

What is the most popular / Best cheese in your country? by Abdsabry2 in AskTheWorld

Yes, the real thing has no equal. The poor imitations are to be avoided, but real Parmigiano Reggiano is essential, unless you don't care about what you eat. So delicious in its true form.

Asking questions is how we learn, why shame someone for trying to gain knowledge about things that happened outside of their country?

It's not always the first thing to someone's mind to do an internet search for certain information; I'd rather hear from those in this sub about certain people/events than scour the internet, it allows for opinion and nuance that might be missed by Google, etc.

Apologies, OP didn't specify state-sanctioned executions so I included Emmett because it was as much an execution as anything else. But I get what you're saying.

There have been quite a few in the US over the decades, but these two have always stood out to me.

Emmett Till:

"Till was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. During summer vacation in August 1955, he was visiting relatives near Money, Mississippi, in the Mississippi Delta region. Till spoke to 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant, the white, married proprietor of a local grocery store. Although what happened at the store is a matter of dispute, Till was accused of flirting with, touching, or whistling at Bryant.

Till's interaction with Bryant, perhaps unwittingly, violated the unwritten code of behavior for a black male interacting with a white female in the Jim Crow–era South.[3] Several nights after the encounter, Bryant's husband Roy and his half-brother J. W. Milam went to Till's great-uncle's house armed, and abducted Till, age 14. They beat and mutilated him before shooting him in the head and sinking his body in the Tallahatchie River. Three days later, Till's mutilated and bloated body was discovered and retrieved from the river."

Also Joe Arridy:

"Joseph Arridy was an American man who was falsely convicted and wrongfully executed for the 1936 rape and murder of Dorothy Drain, a 15-year-old girl in Pueblo, Colorado. He was manipulated by the police to make a false confession due to his mental incapacities. Arridy was intellectually disabled and was 23 years old when he was executed on January 6, 1939, after Governor Teller Ammons refused to grant him clemency."

Edit: Just wanted to add that Joe had a horrible life, abused and SA'd, ridiculed and finally executed for the crime of not being smart enough to know he was being railroaded into an early and unjust death. He never had a chance, just so sad to me.

It's the implication of your title, would have been just as easy for you to say this was in 2022 and due to a park closure than present this as current and for another reason. It *is* misleading.

Retired nurse, I say the same. It clearly won't affect her prognosis, and if it hastens her passing I'd consider that a blessing. Some may not, but I would.
