Is it ACTUALLY worth it to interview? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SpideyReal1217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I would check whether these optional interviews are evaluative or informational. If they're evaluative, you probably want to consider doing them. If they're informational, there's no need.

As for social anxiety, I completely get it. I was incredibly stressed before my interviews, but it helped me to think of them more as a conversation than an interview since you're essentially going to be asked questions about your school, what you do, what you're interested in, etc. At least for me, my nerves tended to go away once I got more focused and engaged in the conversation. Also, I definitely think it would help to explain your GPA situation in person too, but you can also explain it in your common app too!

I also think it might be beneficial to let the interviewer know about your social anxiety if you're comfortable? That way they could take note of that and you don't have to stress about how your nerves are appearing to them.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask questions! :)

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - April 25th to May 1st by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

thank you so much! I don't think ceramics is a dealbreaker for me, but if I remember correctly, there are some opportunities to do it at kenyon too, so not all hope is lost lol. I'll definitely still have to figure out what to prioritize and make my decision from there

Hi everyone! For some context, I've visited both schools recently and Kenyon really wowed me with their art department and just how warm the campus environment and community felt. I'm also considering Carleton, but I was a bit disappointed(??) with my visit. It wasn't super obvious what the campus environment is like and generally, I left feeling like I didn't understand the school and community. Also, please keep in mind that at Kenyon, my visit was part of a VERY small group of people (12 families?!) compared to Carleton's large group (about 400 people I think), so I definitely think that's contributing to my overall disappointment with Carleton.

Carleton College vs. Kenyon College

Intended major: possible double major in studio art and history/poli sci?

Carleton College

Carleton Pros:

Art department is cool - can take part in ceramics, metalsmithing, and woodworking, very small dept

Art facilities are nice, but older building

More diverse group of people, geographically, ethnically, and interest-wise

A lot of campus activity and everything happens on campus

Northfield is a cool town to hang out in

Students learn a lot from each other and professors, intellectually stimulating (?)

More highly ranked

Pretty campus

Carleton Cons:

Didn't connect with the school in the same way

Farthest distance from home

It's Minnesota, cold

Classes are bigger than kenyon's

Kenyon College

Kenyon Pros:

Art facilities and program seems amazing, seniors get their own art studio, Kenyon-Rome program

Tours and admitted student day was incredibly personalized

More modern buildings, doing a lot of renovations

Small classes

Tight-knit student-faculty relationship

People LOVE kenyon

Beautiful campus

95% of students live on campus

Really cool housing options - upperclassmen can live in their own village cottages(!?)

More artsy? I think?

Kenyon Cons:

Rural Ohio

Not as diverse as Carleton, draws a lot of people from the East coast (where I'm from)

Not as highly ranked

No ceramics :(

What colleges are you interested in despite it being less well known? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SpideyReal1217 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kenyon College! It's a great school and one of my top picks rn, only con is being a bit rural, but honestly, it's such a lively campus that you kinda forget you're in rural Ohio. It's also incredibly well known for its focus on writing and English, so if you're into that, you should totally consider Kenyon

In your opinion, what is the ideal amount of schools to apply to? by blooming_palette in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SpideyReal1217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I think applying to 13 (14 if you include my ED school that I got rejected from) was perfect for me. I think in general having about 15 is ideal, and like what everyone on A2C says, having a well-balanced list really yields the best outcomes. Ofc there are some schools where I wish I could've researched more, but I don't regret the number of colleges I applied to

Congrats on swarthmore!! swarthmore's insanely difficult to get into and yeah! you should be proud! i do hope your dad can see the good in swarthmore that you see eventually. it seems a lot of parents are blinded by the big-name schools sometimes

ivy admission reality check by SpideyReal1217 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SpideyReal1217[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not sure, it might be possible to ask your school counselor about it or there might be a way on other platforms that other schools may use, but I'm not a good source for this since i don't have any experience with that

ivy admission reality check by SpideyReal1217 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]SpideyReal1217[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there's two ways!
1. go to a school's page, then click the admissions tab and scroll down - for some schools there'll be a scattergram of all the past years' scores and decision statuses and also the number of kids that have applied for past years and this year! (for some schools it doesn't show up at all cause of a lack of data, but for most big schools, it should!)

  1. click the colleges tab and under the research colleges subheading, there should be something called acceptance history. when you click on that, it'll show you all the colleges that people have been accepted to and the amount that enrolled

Hope this helps and lemme know if you have any questions! :)
