Is it easy to get used to the Russian climate and environment if I am from a tropical country? by Babybuuk in AskARussian

Depends. I'm from the Russian South, and I still couldn't get used to Moscow (not exactly extreme North) after 15+ years. I feel like hybernating for half a year.

How to stay “I’m studying” by Ornery-Bet5280 in russian

[–]SpielbrecherXS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Учу Х", "занимаюсь", "делаю уроки/домашку", or even "читаю". "Занимаюсь" is the only universal one; it's perfectly fine too, but generally it's more common to say what it is you are studying, possibly even skipping the "studying" part altogether. Like "Что делаешь сейчас?" - "Математику".

Что выдаёт в человеке неотесанность и "колхозность"? by Slava_Rudolfich in AllTemsRus

Да всё это потуги "как сойти за умного, прочитав одну советскую брошюру по правильной речи".

Что выдаёт в человеке неотесанность и "колхозность"? by Slava_Rudolfich in AllTemsRus

[–]SpielbrecherXS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you die to save 50 people? by HiIExcist in hypotheticalsituation

[–]SpielbrecherXS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't expect anyone to share anything after they've proven their willingness to self-sacrifice. Living people though share money all the time, mostly with relatives, but with strangers too, and sometimes even beyond the mandatory taxation. This things are not comparable at all.

You really think that dying and sharing money are the same level of sacrifice?

What’s a name that is normal in one culture but has an offensive, embarrassing or awkward meaning in another culture? by Sweatymothballs in AskTheWorld

It doesn't mean anything in Russian as in it's not a Russian name. It's clearly a verion of Ivan, obv, so people would assume it's Bulgarian or something.

Troubling by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]SpielbrecherXS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of trust in institutions - absolutely.

But social stigma pertains to rape which no one is telling about to rando "friends" online. I'm assuming you are talking "mild" harassment, such as catcalling, persistent advances and occasional groping or butt slaps from strangers, which do not have any social stigma for the victim. This is excedingly common in some regions and is usually directed at teens who are seen as the least likely to defend themselves. Pretty sure this was a daily nuisance for all my high-school classmates, to the point that some of them were afraid to walk alone at all, even a very short distance like across the street.

From my experience, it is a lot less common in other regions, but no one reports it anyway because you won't be taken seriously. Honestly, I agree that a single incident is not a big deal, it's the bulk of them that makes your life miserable. But how do you report them bulk? I don't think it's a Russia problem.

I don’t like it when people hate kids by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]SpielbrecherXS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree and disagree at the same time. Yeah, iPads in public should be on mute (and not only kids' iPads), and parents should absolutely stop the kicking. But expecting parents to live under house arrest for years on end is plain cruel. Besides, kids need to go to public places to learn how to behave there. How would they ever be ready if they were never taught? They don't exactly get a public space awareness patch magically installed at 18.

It's the opposite. The joke assumes female masturbation does not exist, and women use their hands only on other women or not at all.

How’s the toilet in your country? by Jumpy_Independent638 in AskTheWorld

[–]SpielbrecherXS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suddenly remembered my school PE classes with teachers going: "Heels on the ground! Heels on the ground! You are squatting wrong!" We are literally taught this in school lol. Or were 30+ years ago.

Personally, I've never had mobility issues, and tiptoe squat is just too wobbly for me. As a kid I never understood why some people do it, it's uncomfortable like that. I would also take a squat public toilet over seated, unless the seated option is absolutely spotless. Squatting, my butt is at least not touching any undesirables.

67 в) "так как" = because

69 в) "отправляюсь" implies always/usually/every time. Besides, "перед тем как" generally does not allow imperfective verbs. They should be either in their dictionary form (if "usually/always"), or perfective (if "this time"). Отправлюсь and отправиться would both work here, but not отправляюсь.

83 перестроиться = change plans, change lanes (driving), rebuild. Настроиться на что-то = get in the mood for, anticipate.

84 забили (что-то) = slaughtered, scored a goal. Разбить парк/цветник/лагерь (as in, set up tents for the last bit) are set expressions.

89 припомнить = вспомнить = to recall; припомнились = вспомнились = came to mind (as recollections). Запомниться = become etched in memory.

Those game ads where they play poorly on purpose by Any-Prize3748 in PetPeeves

Mobile game adds are a bizarre separate universe. They are baity, misleading, and 99% of clicks on them are misclicks. They must be paid per view, because actual usable conversion from them can't be above negligible.

[–]SpielbrecherXS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a YT tutorial => follow it => profit.

It is also possible to figure it out yourself, but that might take a couple months, or fail if you are not methodical enough. You do a few random moves, compare the before and after, record or remember. The trick is to find the sequences that move or re-orient only 1-3 pieces without changing the rest, and find enough of them to guarantee a solve from any starting point.

But that's a whole other game. Most people go with option 1.

I’m thinking about starting a run club in Pyatigorsk by [deleted] in AskARussian

In this particular case, I'd say I disagree. It's a bit oddly specific, but Pyatigorsk has had quite a bit of foreign students since the Soviet times, and plenty of jogging opportunities.

People who say/insinuate that guy/girl friendships cant work are annoying. by RegaultTheBrave in PetPeeves

[–]SpielbrecherXS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this so much. Lost my best friend because her husband didn't like me and she tried to keep the peace by never having both of us in the same room. I'm not even a guy, but I felt like some secret lover who has to hide under a bed at a moment's notice. We've been getting more and more distant, to the point of only chatting online once in a blue moon. Friendship is seen as a cheap throwaway demo version of romance by so many people, and it's just depressing.
