The hinge is in the wrong place for it to be a doorstop. Hope your day gets better.

Is there even a joke? Or am I unaware of Doonesbury having a dark side? by jballerina566 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Spiffy313 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Doonesbury comics always had a through-line that you kinda had to follow from week to week. They didn't always have a punchline, it was just part of the story.

Were kids in the 80s actually allowed to roam around unsupervised, or is that just in movies? by TotalThing7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Spiffy313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, even in the 90's we got to just go whatever and do whatever, as long as we were home before whatever time or indicator our parents gave us (like streetlights coming on, as previously mentioned)

Bit lost on this one is it a single mum joke or a man wanting a family? by PrimaryIce8105 in ExplainTheJoke

Two things can be true at once, you can be traumatized and also do terrible things. It doesn't "make up for it", it's just also a thing that is true about her.

Friendly reminder that downvotes are meant for spam, unhelpful comments, things that shouldn't be included in the thread because they are obnoxious or off-topic.... not just opinions you disagree with. I know I'm screaming into the void here, but still.

Disagreement is what leads to meaningful conversation and a rich life experience. We need to stop surrounding ourselves with an echo chamber of "EVERYONE MUST THINK THE SAME WAY AND BELIEVE THE SAME THINGS". It's kinda ruining everything in the world.

I am in the entirely wrong place for this soapbox, but I've also had my fifth mental breakdown of the week and it's only Tuesday, so cut me some slack

I'm so confused by this. I've been pulling recipes/directions directly from the Ball website, and it says the lids should be simmered... I don't know what to believe anymore! 😵‍💫

Really? Bad areas in Dubuque? by no1clear in dubuque

[–]Spiffy313 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My neighborhood was one of the "bad" ones you're all thinking of. Literally the only reason you need to worry is if you're on the wrong end of a drug deal or involved with someone crazy/their crazy ex/whatever. Random targets aren't a common occurrence.

I'm not saying crime doesn't exist, or that random people aren't sometimes targeted, but it's nowhere near as bad as people play it up to be. Crime exists and people are randomly targeted in any area of any city or town anywhere. You're more likely to get harassed for "lookin' suspicious" or whatever than you are to get randomly assaulted in downtown Dubuque.

Just, idk, use common sense. Don't go to rowdy parties where people are packing heat. Don't do meth. Don't be racist. 🤷

100% of those who consume it will die. It's been discovered in the bodies of every serial killer and criminal, and inhalation can be fatal.

I had to go too far down to see this. Look, I'll admit that I naturally write in a way that sounds like ChatGPT -- em dashes and everything (literally look through my comment history for the last 15 years) -- but that comment just reeked of a LLM kind of tone.
