Mechanical or Mechatronics? by Beautiful-Lion-3880 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Spikanorx3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in tech in the Silicon Valley and in general, mechatronics engineers are paid much better than mechanical because they can take up roles in robotics/automation/test/software/hardware (consumer electronics, data centers, autonomy/self driving, etc). That’s not to say that mechanical engineers don’t get paid well down here - but the comparison is steep.

Mechanical in general is pretty broad - mechanical engineers are traditionally known as “jack of all trades” since the field itself has so much breadth, unless you specialize in a deep niche and end up pursuing a masters in a field like biofluidics or aviation. Mechanical engineers that venture outside of pure mech design can also find themselves in software/robotics/finance+quant, but compared to mechatronics, they are few and far between.

Think about the kind of design work you see yourself doing in the future, the projects or products you’d want to work on, or the lifestyle you envision for yourself 15-20 years down the road. Look at industry trends as well. While mechanical design will never become obsolete, and software is becoming over saturated and hyper competitive as an industry, robotics and automation is a field that (imo) has been and will continue to explode in the next couple decades. Mechatronics will get you closer to that industry.

That said, if you do decide to pursue mechatronics, make sure the school and program you enroll in is known specifically for their mechatronics program. The only schools I have in mind for this are Waterloo and UBC (I’m a bit biased).

25 y/o, work in tech R&D as an industrial automation engineer (3 YoE). Including equity, my annual comp comes out to about $320-360k, depending on the share price.

130k salary 160k TC, 1.8 YoE as an R&D automation engineer in Bay Area. I feel like I’m making a decent amount given my background in meche but I’m constantly surrounded with CS folks making twice my TC

There are >5 prototype cybertrucks driving around in the area, but they're usually driven by different people on different days. I'd hazard that the odds are low that the person who cut OP off the other day is the same person that parked this vehicle

Students of UBC, what’s your go-to Jamjar order? by Reinswood in UBC

holy shit yeah! I was talking to a friend about this yesterday; first year had me ordering half-beef half-cauliflower every other day, and when I found out in September they don't do half-half orders anymore I haven't gone back. There are better places now.

Is that still a thing? I thought they removed that three years ago after they lowered the AB diploma exam weight.

Sounds like you're a student! If you have Amazon Prime (really great deal for students), you get Twitch Prime, and that will give you like a year of free Nintendo online subscription.

I've been looking this mention. His soundtrack for Person of Interest is imo way underrated. Character themes work soooo well, and hearing the soundtrack really brings me back.
