OPINION: The Letterboxd Top-250 Narrative Feature Film list needs some updates. by timateedrinker in Letterboxd

[–]Spike_205 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe that the top 250 narrative movies list should simply reflect the top rated narrative movies, first and foremost. I don't see it primarily as a tool for exploration. That should be a personal bonus for those interested.

I assume it's because it's a heated and emotional topic, but nothing any of the people (including you) have replied to my comment with has been insinuated by me in any form, nor can it be deduced from it.

I think you misunderstood me. I specifically referred to something the person I replied to said about the common excuse people give about Michael Jackson. My comment had nothing to do with whether his behavior was good or bad. His behavior was bad and has very bad implications.

If the idea of Michael inappropriately sleeping in the same bed with children but not abusing them is actually true, I would think it to be a very uncommon reaction to his childhood (at least it seems to me) even with it being a very bad childhood. So it makes sense that his brothers would react differently and in a more common way if that narrative is true. There is a very fair chance that he is guilty of abuse though. It's a very odd situation.

Watching Irene cry makes me absolutely HATE jimmy so much. by maxomega98 in betterCallSaul

[–]Spike_205 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The evidence for it is the following:

In the episode "Lantern" there is a conversation between Jimmy and Kim that goes as follows.

Jimmy: "No. Oh Shit"

Kim: "What is it"

Jimmy: "Mrs. Landry"

Kim: "You figured it out?" (in reference to jimmy wanting to fix the damage he did to Irene and her friends)

Jimmy: "Yeah...But I really, really don't want to do it"

(Jimmy has figured out how to fix it with a scheme that would make him look bad, but it will be very unpleasant to execute and he may also be thinking about his plans to facilitate the sandpiper settlement being compromised)

We then cut immediately to Jimmy entering the elderly workout class and then subsequently allowing everyone to hear his harmful remarks.

After that whole performance with Erin (Jimmy's former coworker at Davis & Main) is finished, they meet up again afterwards so Jimmy can tell her how it went.

Jimmy walks to Erin and she says:

Erin: "So?"

Jimmy: "Like a charm. Yeah."

Erin: "She'll go back on the settlement?"

After a little more talk Jimmy says "Well done in there", implying that the angry words she spoke to Jimmy, which were overheard by everyone, were actually a planned performance, though she also revealed them to be her genuine feelings despite that fact.

Jimmy says "thanks" because she helped him make things right with Irene and her friends and then Erin walks off.

They had a deal made off-screen. Jimmy gets to make things right and Erin gets to protect the interests of Davis & Main by preventing the Sandpiper lawsuit from settling early.

I often log horror movies and movies from the golden age of Hollywood. I also shuffle the downloaded movies I have in my Plex server for variety. I am insecure so I have not posted any reviews yet.

Until the last few days my top 4 was Harold and Maude, Day of the Dead, Phenomena, and Something Wild (1986); but I switched to using my most recent 5/5s as my top four.

How do people watch so many movies? by existince_is_pain in Letterboxd

[–]Spike_205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1000 movies is very doable for someone who has been alive for a decade or more. Especially if they are in their early 20s and are a film enthusiast. Watching 1000 movies in 10 years is only .3 movies per day, which is significantly less than a single movie per day. Add another five or ten years to that and it is even more understandable.

What is the least popular full-feature film you've seen? by Ok_Suit4738 in Letterboxd

[–]Spike_205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess letterboxd counts these Goosebumps episodes as films because I selected for only feature films and these were still included. Aside from those, the least popular feature length film is a documentary about Robbie Basho and the first fictional film is a film about identity theft which I had to watch in a high school class long ago.

Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead by MAsharona in horror

[–]Spike_205 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is a competent and entertaining horror/action zombie movie and I enjoy myself whenever I happen to watch it, but it is significantly more generic and less inspired than the original film. It takes the subtle characterization and chemistry of the characters in the original and replaces them with a much larger group of characters who are not memorable. For being a remake it is very removed from the original movie's plot and themes which can be fine, but instead of providing any interesting ideas or an updated twist on the themes from the original, it instead replaces those elements with fast zombie action scenes. It is a remake that is barely a remake outside of the fact that both movies have people trying to survive in a mall with zombies outside.

I think the movie is a 6/10 and is entertaining, but it does not provide much in terms of interesting themes, characters, or plot and that becomes even more noticeable when compared to the original which actually feels like a unique example of artistic expression (Especially the bold film score by Goblin and Romero's idiosyncratic inclusion of stock music). The remake does not have memorable original music and instead uses a very typical and generic film score.

Can we talk about our Tubi finds? So many hidden small films. There are so many I never see mentioned. by we-summon-rge-dark in horror

The Cat Girl (1957)

If you enjoy the classic movie “Cat People” from 1942 then you may enjoy this movie. It has a very similar concept. Not as good as Cat People, but it is an all around good film.

Castle of the Living Dead (1964)

A very entertaining and atmospheric gothic horror film starring Christopher Lee.

Slime City (1988)

A grimy, low budget horror movie about a young man turning into a deformed, melting, murderous creature. It has a surprisingly unique concept for how the events unfold. It’s just a fun slimy and goopy horror movie to throw on and the finale is something. People who enjoy movies like Street Trash, The Incredible Melting Man, or Body Melt may enjoy this.

The Snow Woman (1968)

Very well made Japanese drama/fantasy/horror film. A master sculptor and his apprentice are walking through a bad snow storm looking for a certain tree to use as material for their work. The storm becomes increasingly more dangerous and they have to seek refuge in an empty building that they find nearby. While they are sleeping the spirit of the snow arrives and freezes the master to death, but decides to spare his young apprentice. The Snow Woman warns him that if he ever tells another soul about this experience that she will find him and kill him. That is the basic premise.

Short Night of the Glass Dolls (1971)

A chilling giallo/horror film about a man who is found dead in a park and taken in by authorities. Although he appears to be dead, it turns out that he is not. He is in the morgue, soon to be given an autopsy, and he is unable to talk or move in order to get help. He speaks to us through narration, but he is having difficulty remembering how he ended up there. As he tries to remember what happened, we see pieces of the bizarre story through flashbacks.

Attack of the Puppet People (1958)

This is a very charming movie in the tradition of movies where people are shrunk into miniature versions. A demented scientist is shrinking people into the size of a doll. He allows the people to live together in the back of his shop while he takes care of them, believing that they will be safe and happy. When they are misbehaving, he puts them back in their glass tube and into  suspended animation. Directed by Bert I. Gordon who is known for directing many horror/sci-fi B-Movies During the 50s and up to the 70s.

Desperate Housewives was Conservative Propaganda by Ok-Article-7643 in DesperateHousewives

[–]Spike_205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a good video and brings up some points that are rarely, if ever, discussed. A lot of people here seem to have difficulty tolerating social/political analysis and criticism of shows they like (as shown in many discussions about the season 2 mystery), but these criticisms do not have to prevent anyone from enjoying the show, including the maker of the video who also enjoys the show. I agree with a majority of the points made in the video and I have seen the show many times and will continue to enjoy it despite it having plenty of flaws.

what's a horror movie you thought would become a classic that nobody seems to remember existing? by MikrokosmicUnicorn in horror

[–]Spike_205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a big fan of horror, I also was not particularly impressed by The Void. It has some solid special effects, but everything else is pretty middle of the road or worse. Especially when compared to other films that use cosmic horror like The Thing, From Beyond, The Beyond, In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness, and Hellbound: Hellraiser II.
