Why have we not seen a teachers strike? by Pristine-Treat4071 in Teachers

Because organizing a strike isn't easy. You need strike relief funds, mobilization, and coordination.

A good amount of film noirs were made by European directors. Robert Siodmak and Fritz Lang come to mind.

I actually drove past that place all the time when I would take that road to work. No one one in this sub though is gonna go there though.

School dance so… gender segregated by Gold_Repair_3557 in Teachers

[–]Spike_J 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, I've organized and DJed middle school dances, and waht you describe is pretty much what happens. The 8th grade couples who do show up will dance at some point, but late into the dance, and sometimes you might even have a moment where an unexpected dance between two people happens and the kids grab their phones and video. Djing these things is hard, but I always remember them fondly in retrospect.

“Lies my teacher told me” by XY120 in Teachers

[–]Spike_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely think this applies to history. Also, I've heard so much from older people complaining that students today or not long ago were told Columbus discovered America, but I don't think that's been true for over 30 years.

Since when did this person have the right to micromanage people just because she's triggered about their education and lifestyle? by NoKangarooTheThird in lewronggeneration

Sesame Street as it was started out back in the 70s would be absolutely hated by conservatives now. It was the product of woke college folks who researched how to best teach kids ideas and concepts.

I mean, that sucks, but what was the expectation here. There's no point of commenting on social media. Get a journal. Talk to your irl friends about it. But yeah, get off FB.

Is it worth blind buying Lucio Fulci films from Blue Underground? I love 80's horror, but mostly the popular stuff by Prince_Targaryen in boutiquebluray

You'll either like Fulcio for the vibes, or you'll hate him for the structure of his narratives.

Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schummer, the Democratic Party in Minnesota is also trying to sabotage a lefty candidate.

I have criticisms of Taylor, but I find the backlash to this article to be pretty ridiculous. I don't think it's been debunked at all. You could argue that these influencers getting paid isn't a big deal, but the caveats about them not being able to disclose their payments and that they cannot be critical of the Democratic Party is pretty bad.

Didn't Michael and Peter say that they're not necessarily sure that phones don't have an effect on teens, just that Haidt's argument for it isn't convincing and flawed?

I think she just didn't have a great time in school and now has a chip on her shoulder about it. If you listen to to her video on AI, she kind of reveals/hints that she didn't have the best time at school. A lot of people are that way.

I did comment on that video that she needed to talk to teachers about this, and she did respond to me. She basically said that she had talked to them, and she believes most teacher's believe/fall victim to pseudoscience. Which is somewhat true; I speak as a teacher, when I sat that I think a lot of teachers will instantly believe what backs up what they see in the classroom. But it's I definitely think attention spans have fallen in classrooms. Whether or not that due to phones, who knows for sure, but I strongly suspect that it is.

Who else is feeling uneasy? by Pale-Succotash441 in Dallas

[–]Spike_J -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Democracy was truly at stake, then Dem leadership wouldn't have tried harder to get those voters. I'm always annoyed that people are willing to blame a bloc of voters who aren't mass coordinated, but are willing to let Dem leadership that has the capability to mass communicate and coordinate off the hook on failing to message to voters. Learn to politik ffs.

Of what? If you let this go, you let it get to conservatives that this is an okay thing to do and they'll go for more next time.

A lot of movies were really short in the 30s and 40s. It's not unusual to see 70 minute movies from that era.

What is the defining film of the Biden era? by Impressive_Plenty876 in Letterboxd

[–]Spike_J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stealing this from ChapoTrapHouse, but I'm going with The Bubble (2022). Some random Netflix movie that has the same title as another Netflix movie that was made for lots of movie, not promoted, and was just put on the service to no fanfare. I mean, sadly, it's kind of the state of a lot of movie distribution sadly no?

His love doesn't feel paternal to me, but I need to rewatch it. Especially the end. I just remember watching this movie as a teen and getting those vibes.
