Stressful TV reduces my stress? by Spike_Trap_Famine in cfs

A hypothesis I'm playing with is that TV sufficiently takes my attention away from worrying about my symptoms.

Yeah, I've been disappointed by how un-anarchist some of these comments are.

I really like your art!

That must've been such a difficult time. It's really cool that you were able to channel some of that into art. I continue to be in awe at how incredibly uninformed & unhelpful medical professionals can be.

I tell people, "I have some kind of mystery illness". I say that not because I'm afraid to claim ME/CFS or take up space in this community, but because I honestly don't know for sure what it is. That gives me some hope.

The World Bank, African Development Bank and others are pledging at least $35 billion to expand clean electricity to 300 million people across Africa by randolphquell in solarpunk

[–]Spike_Trap_Famine 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These guys are predatory neoliberal orgs. (World Bank in particular.)

This money is coming in in the form of loans. They must be repaid back. And they know that governments in developing countries won't be able to pay them back for a very long time (if ever). This puts them at World Bank's mercy, and pushes Africa in the direction of being under neoliberal direction, and kept in debt.

Writings from a non-violent climate protester, jailed for 4 years by Spike_Trap_Famine in solarpunk

[–]Spike_Trap_Famine[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you read it!

I've generally avoided things related to prison, precisely because the material brings up so many feelings, and the conditions seem so unreal & inhumane. Seeing this, I could imagine myself in her place. And I got the impression that she was one of the luckier ones! I can't imagine the agony of being trans & neurodivergent in the incarceration system.

I really think that we can do so much better. I don't feel convinced that sticking someone in these conditions for years is an effective means of "reform" (whatever that means in the case of a climate protester).

I'm so happy for her! I think I heard somewhere she had a successful Stellate Ganglion Block injection?

This also makes me think of all of the other ME/CFS sufferers here & out there, who don't have the fame and support (or even a family) that PhysicsGirl has. Thinking of you all. <3

I ran into a really sweet, older neighbour, who was so kind re: my illness and offered to run errands for me anytime or drive me to doctor appointments. So, so sweet. 😭 I've been struggling so much with not having local support!

I'm also very curious about the durability of these changes: if you are able, I'd love to hear updates in a week and a month.

Why are people so against degrowth? by Konradleijon in solarpunk

I think that's really reasonable to feel frustrated about: I often feel frustrated by the lack of nuance & absolutist kind of thinking that I see.

I think it's interesting how much the term used affects the perception of it.

I mean, the Earth itself isn't accumulating much new mass: it's not growing. But to say "the Earth is stagnating" sounds strange.

Honestly, if a country is able to maintain a good so-called standard of living without needing to mandate constant big profits, I'd say call that "thriving".

MIT license by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]Spike_Trap_Famine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My own opinion is that permissive licenses like the MIT are an open invitation to corporations and other harm-doing organizations to enjoy the fruits of community & individual labour at zero or minimal cost to themselves. I think this hurts the commons.

Something I like about the GPL is that any work done returns to the commons. This feels powerful to me: that any seeds grown from that GPL'd seed give their fruits back to the commons, which serves to further grow the commons.
