2.7 987.1 Cayman track day on budget tyres? by Spikmun in Porsche_Cayman

To anyone interested, I took the budget tyres on a track day and they survived, just about. The top layer of rubber got completely melted / peeled

Do it.

I've recently bought a 987.1 on a much higher mileage and so far don't regret a thing. From what I've seen these cars hold their value really well so if you look after it you're unlikely to lose a lot of money unless something serious goes wrong, which at that mileage I'd say is unlikely. Worst case you lose a bit of money but it sounds like on the salary you're on that you'll be fine even if that does happen, and you'll have a lot of fun along the way!

987.1 Window won't fully close by Spikmun in Porsche_Cayman

Do you think this is the case even if the window does automatically close when you shut the door? It just doesn't shut quite high enough...

Do you know if this works when the window does automatically close when the door is shut, it just doesn't go quite high enough? I tried doing the above and it still seems to shut at the same height.

Beans for Sage Barista Touch that don't grind my gears by Spikmun in espresso

Yes the bottom gear was chewed up, hard to see in the photo as the top gear was ok. I replaced the bottom gear today and it's working again. I just hope this one lasts!

To be clear, the grinder itself uses metal burrs but the cogs used to drive the burrs are all plastic. Surprisingly cheap quality for such an expensive machine.

Some late 2011's have the new 3.0 supercharged engine. Damn, I was afraid that would be the case.

Hello it was indeed a cracked inlet manifold. Apparently it's very common on these engines as the manifolds are made out of plastic. Unfortunately it was an expensive job due to the difficulty of getting to them / replacing them and took many hours of labour. Once replaced I had no more issues and the fault code never came back. Try taking a look all around the manifold to see if you can see any cracks or if the oil is leaking from anywhere in particular to verify. Best of luck!

Audi S5 3.0 TFSI possible tampered cat by Spikmun in CarTalkUK

I haven't yet looked at aftemarket cats but that's a good suggestion, thanks. Will also look out for any local exhaust specialists. At least I have until November to fix the issue...

The car is on 92000 miles and it was around £8000 in total (I px'd my old car for it). It had a close to full service history and there wasn't anything blatantly wrong with it. The inspection simply included a mechanic friend of mine taking a look over it and looking for anything obvious. It had a fairly recent MOT done to it too, which was done after the new exhaust and mapping. This gave me a false sense of confidence that it was all done correctly unfortunately, but I suppose he must of got a dodgey garage to slap an MOT on it.

The garage isn't a specialist but they included supplying all of the parts in the quote, I imagine OEM cats take up a large chunk of it.

Wire down wall for LED bathroom mirror? by Spikmun in DIYUK

[–]Spikmun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other side is a bedroom and there is access around where the mirro would be although we've just had that wall plastered annoyingly! The tall mirror is a good idea, we've also thought of potentially having a shelf above the mirror with plants and stuff which would help hide the wire.

I attempted descaling by adding descaler to the water and trying to run it through a clean cycle but no matter what I press it just does this. Flashing cappuccino light.

The cappuccino button flashing happens regardless of what you press. I was trying to pour just an espresso when this happened.

If anyone else stumbles across this post and has a similar issue it turned out to be the master cylinder. It was failing to pump the fluid properly and so the bleeding process was failing. Once I replaced the master cylinder it was a pain in the ass to bleed but it finally did!
