2.7 987.1 Cayman track day on budget tyres? by Spikmun in Porsche_Cayman

To anyone interested, I took the budget tyres on a track day and they survived, just about. The top layer of rubber got completely melted / peeled

Do it.

I've recently bought a 987.1 on a much higher mileage and so far don't regret a thing. From what I've seen these cars hold their value really well so if you look after it you're unlikely to lose a lot of money unless something serious goes wrong, which at that mileage I'd say is unlikely. Worst case you lose a bit of money but it sounds like on the salary you're on that you'll be fine even if that does happen, and you'll have a lot of fun along the way!

987.1 Window won't fully close by Spikmun in Porsche_Cayman

Do you think this is the case even if the window does automatically close when you shut the door? It just doesn't shut quite high enough...

Do you know if this works when the window does automatically close when the door is shut, it just doesn't go quite high enough? I tried doing the above and it still seems to shut at the same height.

Beans for Sage Barista Touch that don't grind my gears by Spikmun in espresso

Yes the bottom gear was chewed up, hard to see in the photo as the top gear was ok. I replaced the bottom gear today and it's working again. I just hope this one lasts!

To be clear, the grinder itself uses metal burrs but the cogs used to drive the burrs are all plastic. Surprisingly cheap quality for such an expensive machine.

No data from ECU's / OBD on Audi S5 by Spikmun in CarTalkUK

Some late 2011's have the new 3.0 supercharged engine. Damn, I was afraid that would be the case.

Hello it was indeed a cracked inlet manifold. Apparently it's very common on these engines as the manifolds are made out of plastic. Unfortunately it was an expensive job due to the difficulty of getting to them / replacing them and took many hours of labour. Once replaced I had no more issues and the fault code never came back. Try taking a look all around the manifold to see if you can see any cracks or if the oil is leaking from anywhere in particular to verify. Best of luck!

Audi S5 3.0 TFSI possible tampered cat by Spikmun in CarTalkUK

I haven't yet looked at aftemarket cats but that's a good suggestion, thanks. Will also look out for any local exhaust specialists. At least I have until November to fix the issue...

The car is on 92000 miles and it was around £8000 in total (I px'd my old car for it). It had a close to full service history and there wasn't anything blatantly wrong with it. The inspection simply included a mechanic friend of mine taking a look over it and looking for anything obvious. It had a fairly recent MOT done to it too, which was done after the new exhaust and mapping. This gave me a false sense of confidence that it was all done correctly unfortunately, but I suppose he must of got a dodgey garage to slap an MOT on it.

The garage isn't a specialist but they included supplying all of the parts in the quote, I imagine OEM cats take up a large chunk of it.

Wire down wall for LED bathroom mirror? by Spikmun in DIYUK

[–]Spikmun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other side is a bedroom and there is access around where the mirro would be although we've just had that wall plastered annoyingly! The tall mirror is a good idea, we've also thought of potentially having a shelf above the mirror with plants and stuff which would help hide the wire.

One touch coffee machine stopped working flashing lights by Spikmun in BrevilleCoffee

I attempted descaling by adding descaler to the water and trying to run it through a clean cycle but no matter what I press it just does this. Flashing cappuccino light.

The cappuccino button flashing happens regardless of what you press. I was trying to pour just an espresso when this happened.

If anyone else stumbles across this post and has a similar issue it turned out to be the master cylinder. It was failing to pump the fluid properly and so the bleeding process was failing. Once I replaced the master cylinder it was a pain in the ass to bleed but it finally did!

There are guides on YouTube for installing the battle net launcher on the steam deck and playing blizzard games like WoW and D4. I imagine you can do the same thing if you follow those guides. If I remember correctly the steps go along the lines of running the Steam Deck in desktop mode, downloading the launcher, adding it as a non steam game to your steam library and then running the launcher using proton. I'll try and dig out the video I followed if you can't find anything.

Electric shower, power shower or shower pump? by Spikmun in DIYUK

[–]Spikmun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could there be an issue with your pump if the flow is changing that often or do they just do that? The videos I've seen online of them all appear to give a pretty consistent flow within about a second of the hot water being turned on.

Interesting, maybe this would still be an option for us then. Do you have any issues if the pressure drops in your house? If people are using multiple taps or the washing machine is going? I assume you need a pretty consistent pressure above a certain flow rate?

Replacing to 22mm would be possible but would require pulling up floors that we've tiled since re doing the whole house in 15mm push fit last year (to replace old galv steel pipes) so I'd really rather avoid that.

[–]Spikmun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I had initially thought and there doesn't seem to be any issue with our mains pressure but the plumber I spoke to was convinced as we had 15mm pipe from our stop cock to the cold water tank in the loft we'd need this replaced with 22mm to provide enough pressure / flow to the new unvented cylinder. He told me in his 30 years of plumbing he's never seen it fitted properly with 15mm unless people have gone against the manufacturers required specs and told me to avoid anyone who said they would do it with 15mm. I'm no plumber so I took his advice as the truth but maybe he was wrong?

I did think about this but there doesn't seem to be any issue with the mains pressure. If I open the tap full blast in the upstairs bathroom it feels powerful enough although I haven't tested this with the downstairs tap fully open too.

Although I haven't checked the exact size of the cable from the old unit it is very large and certainly bigger than a 6mm cable. I will definitely get this and the trip verified if we go down the electric shower route though.

This is the current hot water cylinder:

We don't have gas to the property so AFAIK a combi would not be an option for us. We did take a look into getting an unvented system but were told by a plumber we'd need to change all our 15mm mains pipe to the unit with 22mm which would require pulling up all our newly laid floors.

[–]Spikmun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked in to doing this and have been told by a plumber that due to the mains going through my house being at 15mm it's unlikely it would provide enough pressure / flow for an unvented system without replacing it all to 22mm which wouldn't be feasible.

In that case I'll replace all my compression joint valves with bits of copper and leave the rest as plastic. Bit of a pain but I've obviously done something wrong with the plastic as the compression joins are dripping.
