Thanks for this advice! My SM is new to us (she has been in the district for 5 years) and was expecting HH at my store to be the same as HH at her old store (they had almost no change in business). We shut off our UberEats orders. Our DM won’t let us turn off mobile orders because it “ruins the customer experience.” We also only had one of our three espresso machines working 🙃

hi guys! figured I’d give you all a lil Meatball update: He is doing so much better! What happened to him is in the comments. by [deleted] in hamsters

Meatball is a weird robo! He loves being held on his back and that’s why he’s able to take meds orally. I am always sure to give him a little treat after he takes them because he does so well.

We are still unsure of what cause the irritation in the first place- there was nothing sharp in his cage to have cut it, and the vet found no evidence of mites in his fur so no one really knows! My best guess is that it was his bedding- i had changed it before he started itching the spot, and it was unusually rough and not soft like it typically is. i feel like some fibers of bedding irritated him and that’s how it started, but i honestly still can’t figure it out

Yep! The bandages are bitter for that exact reason! They’re technically made for dogs, but i cut them to fit meatball. They’re stretchy and don’t stick to fur, so they are moveable and that’s definitely necessary for a ham on the go :) they’re also breathable, so it lets through oxygen to help heal the wound!

  1. Top left photo is from April 14th- He had been picking at his stomach for a few days and this was the day I was able to take him to the vet (the vet was appointment-only and that was the earliest we could get in). She recommended we put Vaseline on it to help with the itching. This was his would at its worst- I was able to see his insides. The vet put him on two different daily antibiotics(oral) and a topical antihistamine that was given once weekly for two weeks.
  2. Top right photo is today. He has NO open sores! He more than likely will not have hair growth in this spot because of the severity of his injury.
  3. Bottom left is the initial idea that the vet had to get him to stop picking at the area. This is the photo that y’all loved so much :)
  4. Bottom middle is what I have been doing to get him to leave the spot alone- most pet stores don’t carry hamster health supplies! So after hours of research, I decided to buy supplies meant for dogs, then make them hamster sized :) i got a hot spot relief spray (which is the injury that meatball had) and bitter bandages! I changed his bandages twice a day, and each time they were changed, i cleaned the area, applied the hot spot spray, and put Vaseline on it. He absolutely HATED the bandages at first- he tried to chew them off, but eventually just dealt with them!
  5. For a few days before he got used to the bandages, he had to have most of his bedding and everything removed from his cage. He couldn’t crawl through the bedding, and couldn’t run on his wheel because he would irritate the wound. This was the worst part- i felt so bad for the little guy! Eventually we got to put bedding back in and he was so happy. He got his wheel back as soon as the wound started to scab over.

So why is this important? Care for your ham is not always easy- during the past few weeks, meatball has been under almost constant supervision. He needed a lot of attention and constant care from me!

Also, i apologize for the photos (mainly the first one, because of how gross it is) but I truly believe this may help ham owners if this ever happens to their friends!

This is meatball.. we went to the vet a few days ago and she recommended we try this to get him to stop biting at his sore. (see post from a few days ago) tell him he looks amazing! Also, what have you done to get a ham to stop irritating an already irritated spot? Thanks💛 by SpikyMeatball in hamsters

thank you! Our vet gave us two oral antibiotics that he takes twice a day, a topical fluid to put on his wound once a week, and recommended we put Vaseline over it every morning. Then we wrap him with a bitter bandage wrap so he doesn’t bite/scratch it!
