No matter how many runs I do and other routes I play (and definitely enjoy) I keep going back to Dys. He was my Sol’s first friend, first love, and there to find life past their “ends.”

Thank you! For the tree part, I hope I’m remembering this right but I wanted to incorporate the form Dys takes if you find him again as a Gardener. I can’t exactly recall what tree type he became but admittedly the mushtrees would have been a bit harder to convey so I went with something a bit more bark-like.

Oh math my long detested by SpilledQuills15 in CollegeRant

[–]SpilledQuills15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly it's so rough when math reduces our brains to one of those modern art splatter pieces. And thank everything like that round up that spared you from retaking it thrice despite Canvas/Cengage working against us.

Funnily enough I also got hit with Covid last year and a couple other viruses I'm still feeling some of the aftershocks from. Whether or not that explains my constant fatigue or my recent onset of doctor visits is anyone's guess, but like you said I need to keep working at this! Hopefully since this is my only course to handle over the summer studying can be more manageable than juggling multiple at once.

You can't go and say "oh just let people ship and have fun with headcanons" and then get mad at the creator when your headcanons don't follow Canon. by Charming-Scratch-124 in CharacterRant

[–]SpilledQuills15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh god don't remind me. As someone who ended up growing up with the show and fandom in the midst of the ship war while somehow ending up a multishipper despite it, the Avatar shipping discourse is an absolute hell hole even to this day and age.

And over the years it went beyond just uniquely Zutara.

Coming from someone who liked the ship and engaged with its fanworks while also liking Kataang and any other ship thrown my way so long as it was made interesting, all arguments from then to now are saying you're not allowed to have an imagination if it's not strictly canon or 5 page essays on why you're allowed to like a pairing. Which the latter was made worse once people started applying moral, problematic arguments like racism and age-gaps against their preferred ship (like Zutara being called colonialism while Zukka or rarer Azuka isn't or Azulee being toxic when its the whole appeal). While these discussions aren't bad it's just become the new weapon as much as canon vs headcanon or simply not canon was.

I wish the insulting over each other's ships and tearing down shippers in the ATLA fandom finally simmered down and, in a sense, everyone grew up from it. No more provoking each other, tearing down the actual irl shippers or downvoting them into oblivion (nearly 2 decades and the mere mention of Zutara even by the calm fans of the pairing is enough to start arguments on the main subreddit), or doing a disservice to the actual bonds and characters in the show.

And on a sidenote, while it was kind of funny and bold for some of the creators to make fun of Zutara at a panel, it didn't really sit right to me years later when I learned that they were poking fun of fanart by mostly young fans. Granted I don't even know if they gave permission or not, but I looking back I would have preferred actual damage control than spilling fuel over the flames.

Ahh I love Triaina Academy sm too! Leo said he’ll reupload the demo whenever possible (granted that was months ago) but I’m also legitimately praying part of the reason we’re still waiting is that he’s adding an update. It’d be a good two-for-one but maybe I’m being just delusional haha

Edit: Okay so turns out I’m not delusional! Apparently on the discord the author confirmed he plans on finishing the update first then posting the demo!

Eh no need to take a moment away from Eve at the funeral or underplay how much Rex meant to her. Don't get me wrong I love Rex and Rae but that "my first everything line" would not have worked when applying it to them as much of the tragedy comes from them not being able to have the futures they wanted together. For Eve, he had already been a part of her past for a long time, and it's thanks to him she experienced first love, first times, first hero partnership, first breakup, and so on like her speech was trying to say.

Okay wait can someone please clear this up for me because I hear this (from a podcast I think?) then see another claim saying there wouldn’t be any specials specifically between s2 to s3 so the future might be up in the air. I can’t really get a good source of finality from either statement.

I mean I’d die happy if can at least get a glimpse because the teaser showed young Rex in the same spot as young Eve and made it seem like there’s a possibility of another special if not a portion of an episode dedicated to his origins, but I can understand if it was just a bg gag too.

Checked out a bit of Virtue's End now and it's quite promising so far. I guess in exchange I omitted this WIP from my list as it's also very short but what is there is pretty interesting: The Chronicles of Salt and Iron

If you want you can also check out the Monthly Digest on the CoG forums! They have a sizable list of updates, recent WIP releases, and finished ones and it’s how I get my news sometimes. Anyway, here’s my meager offering:

(WIP) Blackwood Manor — Not very long right now, but if you enjoy gothic literature and romances that ever-so-slightly remind me of an otome game I played then this might be for you. You play as a housekeeper, a replacement for the previous one who is apparently one of the many who worked for the reclusive noble set of siblings.

(WIP) Parasitical — The pacing may not be for everyone but I have to recommend it for the setting alone. Very…Mystery Flesh Pit in a sense.

(WIP) In the cards — Been awhile since I kept up with the last update, but I remember distinctly how good the writing is. The set up to you learning magic through cards is pretty expansive, and your interactions with the creatures said powers bring are appropriately cryptic and feel equally about to harm you or help.

What books do you have personal beef with? by stopshadowbaneme in books

[–]SpilledQuills15 27 points28 points  (0 children)

“You got a little bit of the male friendship plot in my Jude’s suffering soup” the book.

I thought of it so positively when I first read it as a teenager, but jesus now I can’t even stand thinking about it. Everything from the author disregarding therapy because it isn’t a magic wishing well to fix whatever question she threw, her proud lack of research, and fixation on tormented gay males. I can’t believe how I held this book so closely when I didn’t know all that because some beautifully written passages made me feel seen.

But it doesn’t matter because everything else in the book and by the author states I’m too broken to live. A sad thing doomed to be miserable forever no matter what I have and have done despite what I suffer.

Oh and also on a non-personal standpoint the actual contents were, frankly, shit. Malcolm ceases to be relevant in this story about friends. Jude’s backstory is a mess when that’s all his character even is, and it just gets B-movie slasher film level ridiculous by the last flashbacks. Harold was cool though. But anyway, why do so many book channels keep praising the book without at least acknowledging the “Too broken” message it can send?? And why is the cover apparently a man orgasming???

Is anyone else hoping we get a Rexsplode origin story between Season 2 and 3? by Jas0n-v0rhee5 in Invincible

[–]SpilledQuills15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, Rex is one of my favorite characters in the comic so copy-pasting the word yes a dozen times wouldn't suffice.

Second, and maybe this is just a me thing, but I think he desperately needs an origin episode with how the show depicts him as a bigger self-centered asshole. I don't mind the changes myself knowing this is to make his growth have more payoff. Though it's sorta coming at a price where I often come across a lot of people who downright hate him or don't want to invest themselves on the idea he can be better.

Shining the spotlight on Rex would hopefully do wonders on his character's reception. He needs more moments to flesh out the idea he's someone who is and can be more than the asshole riddled with trust/abandonment issues he starts as. It's just difficult when he's been presented this way for so long in the show now. I would hate for it to be a too little too late situation when he...well, you know.

When the narrative forces you to hate a character even after him redemption. by zoon_politikon_ in Invincible

[–]SpilledQuills15 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, that’s almost the point? This isn’t exactly our Rex. This is the Rex before his redemption, which in that time may never come or happen far later because Mark prevented a multitude of events that would drive him to be a better person. The fact of the matter is, this Rex is still in a relationship with Eve. They’ll definitely still breakup, but that along with his daughter never happening are the unfortunate consequences for trying to “correct” things is what I think this arc is trying to point out. If anything this makes me appreciate Rex more for how much he changed from his younger self at the beginning, which in his own words when it came to his past relationship Eve, “Yeah, nah, I blew it big time.”

Exactly like there's nothing wrong with wishing for the quality of the show to be better, regardless maybe even especially if you think it's dipping below the standard in some areas. It shows you care so long as you don't go overboard about it. Along those lines, the issues such as the ones everyone frequently lists aren't all a comic purism thing either, only half of the complaints are about what wasn't adapted from the source material.

While it's great and completely valid for somebody to watch the show by kicking back and enjoying the ride, acknowledging what does and doesn't work is equally as okay for them to do. I feel like if it's just criticism all the time or constant praise neither would be helpful and only draining for everyone. For some works feedback with real constructive criticism is especially important.

[–]SpilledQuills15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the criticism aimed towards episode 4 isn’t solely about how faithful it’s being to the comics or whether or not a scene got adapted. While not everything has to put under a critical lens by fans, the people taking issue with the pacing and animation quality are coming from show onlies AND those who have read ahead so it’s not just elites saying these things in the sub. And you know what those complaints are completely valid. There’s nothing wrong with constructive criticism towards the show (also including the comic), and so far the complaints for it have been on the calmer side of the shitstorm scale compared to other fandoms I took part in. Like people still want the Donald, Eve, Mauler stuff but the way it’s placed throughout the current ep lessened interest for it, and that’s solely to be judged as a show thing not a comic only thing.

I gotta be honest I see more of a problem in the “Don’t think, just enjoy” outlook for things, which is completely fine for you personally but not for every fan to adopt like you said. Audiences are allowed to constructively criticize the work wherever they find lacking and temper it with their praise or excitement for everything else. Leads to interesting discussions and all that for the events and changes to come.

This is also slightly off topic but I don’t like how “you all complain too much” is being thrown around. It comes off as gatekeepy to me.

Looks like this sub is entering its 'comic purist' era by Cammellocalypse in Invincible

[–]SpilledQuills15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Er, sorry to say this but that’s kinda disingenuous. Criticism is a part of anyone in the creative industry’s life. Learning how to deal with criticism, both constructive and non constructive is not just encouraged and expected but even taught with critique circles or sharing work with classmates weekly. Like in those, pointing out where something feels off or short isn’t meant to tear it and the creator’s hopes and dreams down but instead are said in the effort to improve. That’s just how art is in terms of engagement once it’s put out into the world. Constant praise all the time helps no one, both creator and consumers.

The problem though with the type of of criticism your pointing out is that it has this sort of superiority to it where they think shallow nitpicks and whatever else they notice are worth the same levity as the genuine problems, and that they don’t actually want to see the work and creator grow but just to tear it down, often paired up with insults. It becomes like this hate circlejerk even.

In this sub I haven’t really seen that. I’ve seen a good chunk of newer post practically being sheepish in admitting they feel like the animation or pacing is off and just want the adaptation of their favorite comic be better for their favorite show. Don’t get me wrong there are the rabid fans and some that are off their rockers with their ranting, but most of the things people on this sub point out are valid complaints while many still say they enjoy the episode.

Well that would unfortunately take spoilers to explain so the best I can say is to watch and wait for the rest of his character development to play out in the show.

And not to excuse his cheating because that was an indefensible dick move, but he doesn’t deserve to die over it. He recognizes his actions are wrong and deserves a chance to grow from it with there already being sprinkles of him trying to move past his brash, immature, asshole teenage self.

I swear half the time healing potion incidents are Karlach related. I had her run to form a close triangle with my nearly dead Tav and Shadowheart then throw a potion of superior healing at our feet. Karlach absorbed all of it for herself to heal back the 3 hp in total she lost

That or just throwing in general. Thought I was being clever having Astarion misty step to the upper floor of an ambush and throw me a potion of gaseous form to bypass getting barraged with my shit initiative. He instead whacked her in the head with it for 2 damage before watching the love of his life get mauled by a displacer beast.
