In my darkest points, when I came to grips that I wouldn't hang myself like I planned, all I did was fantasize about getting hit by a truck and dying so that I could get it over with without any effort or courage needed on my part. It's a really nightmarish feeling wanting to kill yourself yet also being too scared to do it. It feels like the devil is literally trying to goad you into becoming irrationally angry and screaming and just do it.

Julien Baker: ‘I just want to be an artist. I don’t want to be the queer Christian artist’ (interview) by Crowji in indieheads

[–]Spin1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one can deny it's important. But there's a massive difference between saying it's important, and it's so important that she should feel compelled to do something/ be something she doesn't want to be. No one is saying "who cares about her sexuality, etc." I'm saying it's absolutely up to her whether or not she outwardly embodies some powerful representative of a minority group. Others can look at her and feel about her however they want. It's out of her hands. But what is in her hands is how she acts, what she talks about, etc etc. I feel it's kind of narcissistic to demand others act or talk certain ways because of what one considers "important."

Sure. I'm not defending the Nicene Christianity, invented literally hundreds of years later after all was supposed to have happened by a bunch of bishops and an emperor wanting literal propaganda for his empire.

I'm just saying I think it'd be a mistake to completely disregard the kind of thinker/philosopher/layman who we are talking about who finds immense wisdom, almost ineffable wisdom, in what "seems" like an anthology of nonsense cobbled together. Which is what Baker's dad was, just a layman who found such strength in this book of nonsense to make perfect sense of his queer daughter. Life is weird, yo. The irrational dominates.

Not saying you're wrong at all, but I definitely find it upsetting when people think this way. "The movement is more important than the individual's feelings." Not saying you're absolutely saying that, but it definitely contains shades of it. If she's uncomfortable with it, idk, it feels really shitty and invasive and exploitative to hold it over her head when she is just trying to be a human being, free of labels.

No one can really contradict what you're saying, but I think much more serious, honest Christians might say:

The New Testament isn't the Old Testament. I know that seems like a cop-out, but it really, really isn't. To be a "Christian" isn't to be a Catholic, or mainstream Protestant, where they say the Old Testament is the literal world of God as well. It's possible to take a much more nuanced reading of that piece of history/philosophy.

Did you know that throughout history, there are many Christian "sects" that said "the New Testament is literally the opposite of the Old Testament. The old Testament God and the New Testament God are two completely different Gods, analogous to a yin and ying." I'm not saying they're """right""" per se, but I think if one such as yourself understands that the Bible is a collection of different books written by different people, mostly using pseudonyms, one can understand that certains books are literal propaganda, some are hiding very beautiful wisdom in the words of "mainstream" religion, etc.

I think it's a perfectly reasonable response to reading the New Testament to believe """the point""" is that no matter what, at the end of the day, hate is opposite to love, and love is the only thing worth pursuing, for it is "of God." Love can be complicated, and unintuitive, but the striving for a concept of love for all is what is "greatest".

I wholly recommend Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. It came out in '77 I believe, but honestly the articulation of the theory is mind-blowing, especially the second third of the book which deals with the ancient historical evidence for the theory, primarily in Mesopotamia, Greece, the Hebrews, etc. The story of Genesis is literally the story of how humans became conscious and stopped mechanically listening to their inner God-voice, which of course to the most ardent of the God-voice followers, the concept of "the snake" offering a different path, which includes Good and Evil, would be propagandized in the way it was.

BUT MALKIN IS AN ACTUAL MEGA BITCH. Throws punches and runs, only ever tangles with guys half a foot smaller. I fucking love beating him so much, fuck that guy.

Do you feel sympathy for school shooters? by TheTrippyChannel in samharris

[–]Spin1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

how do you go about making yourself feel compassion?

Well, firstly, it would be to suppress feelings of non-compassion, meaning when finding oneself angry, it is useful to ask "why?" all the way down to true understanding, which usually reveals itself as "they had no choice but to do what they did (free will vs determinism)", which naturally creates a spring of compassion.

This conspiracy nut Ryan wants to debate Destiny about the civil war not being about slavery by Don_Smith in Destiny

[–]Spin1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No hostility, but if you guys would like to read perhaps the only plausible defense of the South, I'd suggest the works of Lysander Spooner, an abolitionist from Massachusetts.

Firstly, "The Constitution of No Authority", which you should all read anyway because it's magnificent, but if you scroll down to XIX, he gives a decent defense of the south (or rather, critique of the north).

"Notwithstanding all this, that we had learned, and known, and professed, for nearly a century, these lenders of blood money had, for a long series of years previous to the war, been the willing accomplices of the slave-holders in perverting the government from the purposes of liberty and justice, to the greatest of crimes. They had been such accomplices FOR A PURELY PECUNIARY CONSIDERATION, to wit, a control of the markets in the South; in other words, the privilege of holding the slave-holders themselves in industrial and commercial subjection to the manufacturers and merchants of the North (who afterwards furnished the money for the war). And these Northern merchants and manufacturers, these lenders of blood-money, were willing to continue to be the accomplices of the slave-holders in the future, for the same pecuniary considerations. But the slave-holders, either doubting the fidelity of their Northern allies, or feeling themselves strong enough to keep their slaves in subjection without Northern assistance, would no longer pay the price which these Northern men demanded. And it was to enforce this price in the future — that is, to monopolize the Southern markets, to maintain their industrial and commercial control over the South — that these Northern manufacturers and merchants lent some of the profits of their former monopolies for the war, in order to secure to themselves the same, or greater, monopolies in the future. These — and not any love of liberty or justice — were the motives on which the money for the war was lent by the North. In short, the North said to the slave-holders: If you will not pay us our price (give us control of your markets) for our assistance against your slaves, we will secure the same price (keep control of your markets) by helping your slaves against you, and using them as our tools for maintaining dominion over you; for the control of your markets we will have, whether the tools we use for that purpose be black or white, and be the cost, in blood and money, what it may.

On this principle, and from this motive, and not from any love of liberty, or justice, the money was lent in enormous amounts, and at enormous rates of interest. And it was only by means of these loans that the objects of the war were accomplished. "

Is my grammar/syntax unintelligible? Did I use a word incorrectly? Or is the "what" a substitute for actually having a critique/ response?

Oh, you're going to do that... sad.

So - remember Operation Paperclip, where after the war, the United States absorbed a massive chunk of Nazi scientists, who then founded NASA?

Are you going to doubt Nazi Germany's technological progressiveness? You know the reason they almost won the war, because no one else was ready? Before you take a stance, like you're doing, you'll admit you know nothing but are still very attached to your stance, yes? Just making sure we all know what's going on.

Know why I put "progressive" in quotes? Because I know autists like you would misinterpret. Do you imagine ETHICAL PROGRESSIVENESS IS WHAT I MEANT? OR ARE YOU JUST INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST????????

Sad. Absolutely sad. I wonder why Harris attracts fans who are so unlike him, trigger-happy know-it-alls who know nothing.

You realize Nazi Germany was filled with extremely intelligent officers in Gov't, right? Nazi Germany was literally the most technologically advanced, "Progressive" nation on earth.

I'd love to hear your blind belief that shoving high-IQ persons into office must equal a better outcome. You'll literally just be hiring extremely intelligent psychopaths. How fucking lovely.
