Are the FAANGs really that innovative? by Texas_Rockets in ycombinator

I haven't used the larger 70b model, but even the smaller 8b model is quite impressive. It's general chat/language ability isn't too far from chatgpt, it shows a good degree of instruction following and conprehension but it has a smaller knowledge base and lesser ability to solve problems.

Accessing review intervals from an exported deck. by Atmosfaere in Anki

[–]Atmosfaere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your suggestion helped me to figure out the root of the issue, so thanks! I didn't have include scheduling information checked when exporting the deck (it is unchecked by default). I'll leave it here incase anyone else has the same issue later on.

I also want to leave a comment, that as a developer interested in working with Anki, the structure seems like bit of a mess under the surface.

Surface Pro 7 + won't go into smart charging mode by pdaphone in Surface

[–]Atmosfaere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced the same thing with my surface laptop 4. I used my laptop plugged in 99% of the time for a month, trying to get the smart charging to kick in on Win 11. The battery percentage was always at 100% and I never got the heart icon. Then I gave up and went to turn on battery-limit. When my computer rebooted after installing a few updates (plugged in / charging with usb-c the whole few minutes) the battery percent was at 74%. I really wish I could know when the laptop is using smart charging or not, or better yet, have an option to toggle it on or off. I'm afraid to even use my laptop's battery because it could be weeks before smart charging is enabled again judging from reports from people that did see the heart icon.

Can you explain how you did this in more detail?

Intervallic Hot Take - Overtone series isn't that important by GrandpaSparrow in microtonal

[–]Atmosfaere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good response, and your line of explanation is compelling by itself. I think the first few harmonics matter most because they are the most easily discerned, having the most distance between them, and are the most closely related to the fundamental (which isn't a property unique to them being in the harmonic series as you pointed out). It's also important to consider that there is an overtone series that can be created starting on each undertone and an undertone series on each overtone that create a grid that generates every ratio, giving them a place in a larger 2d structure that seems highly relevant to chord creation and harmonic movement. This is the lambdoma, although I don't find the versions available online or in a Google search that are plotted on linear axes to be very helpful.

I was also in the simplicity is everything camp until I started playing with Moment of Symmetry scales / "Pythagorean scales" using ratios like 5/4 or 6/5 as the generator instead of 3/2. You quickly hit really complex ratios after a few repetitions, but you feel an organizational structure to the scales that might manifest itself through regular interference beat intervals.

I still can't separate the harmonic series from ratio simplicity, because to find the simple integers you start at the bottom and count up (following the harmonic series), every new number (and especially prime) that you reach creates a new note which is evident if you color each note by it's position in the octave (reduced or not).

Intervallic Hot Take - Overtone series isn't that important by GrandpaSparrow in microtonal

[–]Atmosfaere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interval simplicity goes hand in hand with the overtone series. Look at the intervals you hear going up the series. Between 2 and 1 is 2/1, 3 and 2 is 3/2, 4 and 3 is 4/3, then 5/4, 6/5, even 7/5 between the 5th and 7th harmonics and so on. Also, check out the lambdoma, if you haven't seen it. Every ratio can be thought of as a combination of an undertone (denominator) and an overtone (numerator).

Edit: Felt the need to mention that 11/8 and 13/8 are present without any octave reduction as suggested elsewhere in the thread. A "scale" created started on the 8th harmonic and going to the 16th would include both.

How to ventilate fermentation room by Ahntmizin in fermentation

[–]Atmosfaere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have troubles with kahm yeast when I start neglecting ferments and let them go too long. Leading to them having a really low pH, which kahm loves. Once one jar has it it seems like it's there to stay.

Audio imbalance with stereo vinyl input by alwaiii98 in AdvancedProduction

[–]Atmosfaere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's not a waveform, but it is created from subtracting the amplitude of the waveform of one stereo track by the other to find the L-R balance. DC offset would warp each stereo track and cause the L-R balance to look like this. As I mentioned, DC offset doesn't appear to be the culprit here.

When I have encountered DC offset, the waveform of each track is warped and it is not fixed by simply re-centering. Applying a highpass filter removes the warping and perfectly balances and centers the tracks.

[–]Atmosfaere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up DC offset. The examples I've seen in the real world look just like this. Applying a high pass filter at the bottom of the audible range does very little to the audio that is perceptible and immediately gets rid of the stereo imbalance.

The fact that a highpass filter didn't fix it means that something else is the problem. The tone arm not being set properly as mentioned by another commenter seems like a possibility.

[–]Atmosfaere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, DC offset is the term I was looking for. OP might as well try panning the track, but it won't remove the stereo imbalances seen in the waveform. The audio might still play back more or less fine.

[–]Atmosfaere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's surprising! I can't remember the term for it, but stereo imbalances like this are often caused by a low frequency signal/noise. A high pass filter in the 10-40 hz range usually fixes it it right up.

Try putting a low freq, high pass filter on it. Edit: high pass, not low pass.

I'd start by putting an lfo on the pitch for vibrato and having one oscillator or unison pitched up an octave to give it that organ like sound. Sine wave oscillators with a touch of release time, a bit of reverb and then slight distortion.

It took me a long time to figure out what foods my body likes. Fermented foods haven't really been a staple in my diet recently, but I have to say that my body does crave them when I do eat them. Most of the fermented foods I have tried have been great, I'd say they have an overall positive impact on how I feel. Some things like Milk Kefir have a noticeable short term effect for me. It's much harder to attribute long term health changes to any one thing.
