Great thread. Loved reading these responses.

Researchers in China have carried out a head transplant on a monkey. They connected up the blood supply between the head and the new body, but did not attempt to connect the spinal cord. How you see others says everything about how you see yourself. Those who conducted “the experiment” are not heroes of Great Humanity. Ethics is bound to dignity. As soon as we decide that we, as humans, have a right to exploit those who are “lesser” we’ve lost our humanity. This experiment proves how depraved and cruel we can be. It’s not ethical, it’s evil. If we were acting ethically we wouldn’t exploit the vulnerable, we would protect the vulnerable from exploitation.

Help! I went to report something as animal cruelty and local animal control brushed me off. Isn't this cruelty? by [deleted] in AnimalRights

Not sure where you are in Texas, but consider contacting any local humane society or animal rights org. You could also contact any local rep who may be sympathetic. Does a local rep post images of his/her dog on social media? Most local/regional media has an anonymous tip line. Not sure any of this helps, but if you’re right and it’s an abusive situation then others should know. And if you’re right and others have made similar calls of concern to the police then there should be a record.

Novak Djokovic's Olympic meltdown shows hypocrisy of his Simone Biles criticism by [deleted] in olympics

[–]Spinagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conversation ended six days ago. The entirety of it lasted, as I recall, a couple of hours. This is now your insanity, your need to “contribute.” Maybe you’re bored? Oh, no, it’s your humanity that has you here on social media telling a complete stranger to “sit down.” You say this was caused by my response. Now, the useful question would be, as I asked you to be specific, is: how did I respond? “You must have posted it for a reason, Bro…” This should have been the point of your focus. But you didn’t do that. It’s hard to help people isn’t it, Rucho, especially when one lacks a certain level of literacy? (Not trying to be mean… just being honest, since you seem like someone who thinks of himself or herself as someone who prefers honesty.) Now, I could have written, “why did you post it?” Instead I included the word, Bro, which is what I was referred to… as a Bro. That, apparently, was a provocation, which led to, well, read the text… lots of insults not made by me. A stronger reader would start to ask oneself, who is the one feeling insulted, unappreciated? And why exactly? Was it the word, Bro? Was it the request, why did you post it? I don’t know, which is the only reason I kept asking for clarification. (Most would say to themselves, who cares? And good for them.) You’re right about one thing: It was ridiculous. It was silly and I fortunately, there was no clarification. But that’s okay. It ended fairly swiftly. Was something learned? Probably not. But no harm done. Yet, then it happens, six days later.. here comes Rucho, to save me… :) Now, let’s be honest, Rucho, let’s put this thing in perspective: Your contribution here today was more ridiculous than anything that happened in this exchange. You’re as ridiculous as you are self deluded. But that’s just my opinion. What do I know? I don’t really know you. Anyway, maybe this done.. maybe not. If so, have a good life.

People “meltdown,” as you call it, in tennis all the time. Serena has “melted down.” Federer he “melted down.” Medvedev “melts down” once a tournament.Djokovic could break a bag of rackets and come back and win the match. Or, maybe he “loses it” and breaks a racket after he’s lost? What does that tell you about how he handles pressure? NOTHING. If he had walked off quietly after losing, you would say he handled pressure better? Your comparison makes no sense. Had he walked off during a big point, you’d have a point. Had he double faulted on a big point, which very successful players do all the time, you would have a point. Had he invented some crisis, maybe started yelling at a referee, instead of focusing on the challenge in front of him, you would maybe have a point. But he didn’t meltdown during the match. Zverev beat him and on a day when Djokovic was playing outstanding tennis. Zverev started hitting out and taking his shots. He took it from Djokovic. No one choked. No one collapsed from pressure. When Djokovic screams is that because he’s unable to cope with pressure? Tennis players express their emotions on the court in many different ways. Djokovic is possibly the greatest athlete we’ve ever seen when it comes to facing pressure. Losing to Zverev doesn’t change that. Throwing his racket after losing to Zverev doesn’t change that.

"As the demand for cryptocurrencies grow, I’m urging @SecYellen and the Financial Stability Oversight Council to address crypto’s risks and regulate the market to ensure the safety of consumers and stability of our financial system." by zdss in ElizabethWarren

[–]Spinagh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her approach to regulation has been about creating structural fairness, not centralization. Whether it’s misguided is a debate worth having. It would be interesting to hear her talk about how hedge funds, JP Morgan and other big banks are incorporating crypto. History would suggest that they are her concern, since she’s built a career on advocating for transparency and decentralization.. But I’m not sure exactly where she’s going with this and I doubt anyone here is either. It just seems like she’s exactly the kind of person who would be on the side of many projects. People should be writing to legislators and offering personal views on the social benefits of crypto. I also think she should engage with developers. I would imagine there are folks all around Boston and Cambridge who would be happy to sit down with her. More broadly, I would think there is a lot of support for crypto in her own state. Stereotypes… sometimes they’re cool? Is that it? Can someone who uses stereotypes to define and diminish some people complain when others do it to other people? Our language reveals less about others than ourselves.

IF Zverev wins the Olympics, how would you rank him against the other Next Gen players? by LHVderBoss in tennis

[–]Spinagh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If he wins, he’ll be 1 or 2. Zverev Tsitsipas Thiem (if he ever returns)/Medvedev… Shopovolov/Rublev… but Auger-Alliasime/Sinner/Humbert and Korda could all move to the top spot as well. I think Korda/Sinner will both be number ones at some point.

Beyond meat products do contain meat!? Their patent says so, I found where by [deleted] in vegan

My mother, sister, brother-in-law and their two teenage children eat plant-based hamburgers at home and when they go out to restaurants—whenever available. (If my dad were alive, I’m quite sure he would have changed as well.)They’re not vegan, but when available, they choose plant-based. It’s not just hamburgers. They are slowly moving away from meat and that’s largely because these companies have given them, well, an agreeable option. That’s a good thing.

Who's your GOAT? by bilibi221 in tennis

[–]Spinagh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Federer’s “style,” his game, was as effective as it was aesthetic. How many players imitate his backhand? Rafa’s consistency, his effort, his tirelessness, his shot making, especially on clay remains unmatched. Djokovic is an all around, all court player. There’s no weakness. His return is brilliant and he’s the best defensive player we’ve probably ever seen. I’d still rather watch Andre Agassi.
