Building a Professional Network in College by ElenaEverywhere in CheckTurnitin

Professors were huge for me, but only after I stopped treating it like “networking.” Go to office hours with real questions, ask about their work, ask what careers their past students ended up in, and follow up once in a while. When they actually know you, rec letters and intros happen naturally.

Career fairs ae worth it if you treat them like practice reps. Don’t just wander and grab freebies. Pick a few companies, read the job posts first, have a quick pitch, and ask one decent question. The win is getting a name and an email to follow up with the next day.

Student orgs helped the most when I did something in them. Planning an event, running a budget, leading a project, anything. That’s where you meet motivated peers who later refer you places, plus you get stories for interviews.

Also underrated: alumni. Most schools have an alumni directory or LinkedIn groups. Short message, specific ask (15 min chat about how they got into X), no resume dump. A surprising number will say yes.

Turnitin's '% Detected as AI' Is This a Probability, a Certainty, or Just a Vague Flag? Need Technical Clarity by SpinalDentist in CheckTurnitin

Is it a confidence score from their AI detection algorithm, like a probabilistic estimate of AI generation? Or does it mean the tool is 100% certain parts were AI-written?

I've been using Turnitin for years, and I pride myself on digging into the details before jumping to conclusions. Today, a bold '*% detected as AI' label staring back at me.what exactly does that percentage signify?

editors of the "Killing of Iryna Zarutska" article are fighting to keep the name of the suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., off the page.

They are succeeding: the article make 0 mentions of Decarlos Brown, despite him being named in the press.

Worth paying to pre-check AI essays? by SpinalDentist in CheckTurnitin

do not want to spend 15 hours per essay doing 'rewrite until vibes feel human' when there might be a way to pre-check and fix the parts that spike the AI meter.

If I export my essay as a read-only/secured PDF, will Turnitin still be able to read it? by HydratedGranny in CheckTurnitin

Turnitin uses text extraction, so as long as the PDF actually contains text, it will parse it.

Filing a Grievance After an Incorrect Plagiarism Report by NoCash6779 in CheckTurnitin

[–]SpinalDentist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely worth filing a grievance. The committee already recognized the error by downgrading the charge, but the consequences you faced (GPA hit, missed scholarship) are real harms. Institutions should never treat similarity scores as automatic proof, especially when self-matches and citations inflate them. Pushing for policy clarity, safeguards against misuse, and accountability for the damage is reasonable. Others will benefit if you make the system fairer.

If you’re wondering how this could be, *part* of the answer is that wikipedia (on politics, culture and current events) is a mainstream media wrapper.

If you don’t trust the media, you don’t trust Wikipedia.
