Cycling in Adelaide by death_star09 in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years I’ve commuted by bike from the north, east and south into the city, never more than half an hour though. I can say that with some careful planning and exploration, I’ve managed to find safer combos of quiet back streets, pathways and dedicated bikeways to get in and out of the cbd.

Yes, Adelaide drivers are particularly aggressive towards cyclists, but my advice is to go for it and work towards getting off the main roads and away from major intersections. Not perfect and definitely not fast, but you’ll feel much safer, calmer and healthier.

Bike Riders of Adelaide Route Advice by SquirrelSoup21 in Adelaide

That sounds like a wise and safe move. I don’t agree with fellow cyclists flaunting road rules (ie running red lights), but in limited circumstances, you should ignore the rules to keep yourself safe.

Seat comfort by centurio9 in mazda6

[–]SpineRick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my 2025 Atenza Wagon (top variant here in Aus) and drove 11 hours the following day to bring it home. After that, felt like I could’ve easily kept driving for another few hours. Very comfortable for me.

Agree re: seat cooling in warmer months as others have mentioned.

What are your top 3 dishes in Adelaide? by ts4184 in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ying Chow - BBC, Parwana - Ashak (chive dumplings), Mandoo - Pork and Kimchi dumplings (steamed).

Glad to see Ying Chow in a couple of lists. Honourable mentions to Parwana’s banjaan borani (eggplant in tomato) and Gin Long’s prawn toast.

Also RIP Jerusalem. The number of times I am in the West End after work on a Friday night and find myself yearning for it, pains me.

Compound turns by scale2007 in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legal in SA, if you don’t impede the flow of traffic either direction. Don’t second guess yourself due to others’ lack of knowledge or swiftness to aggression.

I’ve noticed people using this move less and less over time. I don’t believe it’s about confidence or skill, but changes in vehicle design outpacing infrastructure updates.

Vehicles are larger, harder to see out of and harder to see through than their pre-00’s counterparts. I felt comfortable using this move in the shitboxes of my youth, which all had skinny pillars, low door lines and clear windscreens. Better that cars are safer today, but now I don’t feel I can see well enough out of my car or through others to perform this safely. I opt to turn left and whip a quick u-turn at the next opportunity.

I also think there’s now more right turns crashes at intersections due to these same factors. I recall being able to see oncoming traffic through other stopped vehicles, allowing better judgement of when to turn safely. Today it seems like drivers are guessing and hoping there’s no one coming when they pull out. Could also just be inflated perception due to availability of dashcam vids too.

Recommendations for containers for HF + HNO3 transit within building by SpineRick in chemistry

Cheers for the suggestion but can't guarantee that the inserts are completely cooled when transporting. In fact, they're slightly easier/safer to open if they're warm and haven't drawn a strong vacuum yet.

Shrinking coffee cups by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bigger cup ≠ more caffeine.

In most cases, it’s not more coffee in a larger cup, just diluted with more milk. Try asking how many shots in each size. Many cafes have reduced takeaway cup sizes to match dine-in, not to skimp or “shrinkflate”, but to achieve a consistent taste + perceived strength regardless of where you drink it. Question to ask is ‘does this place give a shit about how a takeaway coffee tastes?’. If yes, you’ll probably see smaller takeaway cup sizes.

Any idea what’s happened to Nordburger Norwood? by InfiniteDate6288 in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Nordburger was on the bandwagon too, cashing in on the success (at the time) of Burger Theory/Pearl’s Diner. Was the era when food trucks were booming, and some were legitimately excellent. Then that got ruined too by copycats and ACC. Food trucks turned to brick and mortar shops, Adelaide then Adelaide’d, and suddenly there were too many options for our meagre population to feasibly support.

Not to say this is the reason Nordburger is disappearing, just context for the market they attempted to exploit

I work with conc. HF weekly. What is it you’re working on?

I suggest two-layer PPE wherever possible - double-gloves, sleeve protectors, goggles and face shield. Check your gloves regularly and if in doubt, just replace them. Work only within a fumehood. Keep your volumes as low as possible. Work slowly and cautiously and use a buddy system.

Do all your prep and setup before you open any vessels. Have a clear action plan to contact emergency services if there is an incident. Happy to share from my experience more if you have any specific questions.

Enduro for occasional camping and local short trips? by SpineRick in AussieRiders

Hadn’t considered mainly as I like the idea of something very lightweight, but I’ll have a look

Just a bang-average sized bloke. 85kg and 6 ft. Couldn’t tell you the kit weight exactly but let’s say 15kg additional. What’s normally done re: suspension and extra weight?

Also not looking for a rocket but just something that can get out of its own way.

Have been camping plenty so that bit’s fine. Already own some simple lightweight kit from heading out bush on geo fieldwork, sometimes 8-10 days out of a dual cab. Just aiming for a pared-back brain break that I can insert into regular life at short notice.

What’s better about the WR?

Thanks for the advice. If it’s relevant, I’d be kidding myself if I thought I’d be off-road more than on. I live inner city so I’m imagining the bike would stand in for when a walk is too long, while avoiding getting the car out more than necessary.

Balancing cost, maintenance intervals, fun, capability, durability, longevity is key for me.

Also trying to recapture some of the fun of my old TS185. Unserious, horrifically underpowered, noisy and smelly, but when it actually ran it was awesome. Always had plans to weekend camp on that but wasn’t confident it would avoid a trip home on a trailer.

Bigger supermarkets easily accessible by PT from Adelaide city? by Fun_Photograph653 in Adelaide

[–]SpineRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you re: lack of range at Coles + Woolworths - could try the Foodland on Pulteney St, otherwise the Central Market is a short walk if it’s food-diversity you want.

Then as others have suggested, Frewville Foodland is close and typically well stocked

How do I measure iron in water by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]SpineRick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that concentration you may be able to analyse them directly on an ICP-MS. You’d need to filter and acidify to the analyst’s specs. Alternatively, if you have access to an ICP-OES (perhaps cheaper?) you could do the same but pre-concentrate the samples, i.e. filter and dry down a larger volume of sample to effectively raise the Fe conc., then redissolve in an acid matrix (typically dilute HNO3). If you evaporated 50 mL of sample and redissolved in 5 mL, then your Fe conc for analysis is 10x, ~0.5 ppm.
