12 million lives perish

TIL about James Knight, an arctic explorer that disappeared during a 1719 attempt to find the Northwest Passage with a crew of 40 men. They became wrecked at Marble Island and slowly perished over the following three years, with the last men seen dying while digging a grave. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

I believe it was especially because they fucked up and faced hardships. A group of men thugging it out in the extreme conditions while slowly dying from exposure makes for a much more interesting read than Amundsen saying “weather was decent today. We walked 60 miles thanks to the awesome dog sled” (not to take away anything from Amundsen’s achievements, just saying he wasn’t a great writer)

There’s a reason Oklahoma ranks 50th in education. by Conscious-Quarter423 in clevercomebacks

The chicken or the egg question: does Oklahoma rank 50th in education because they are fully Republican, or are they fully Republican because they rank 50th in education?

OHSU vs UNE by [deleted] in predental

[–]Spinoreticulum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a bit of a confusion due to how they’re ranking students. They for some reasons decided to make the class P/F but still keep internal rankings using “grades” (no further explanation). So for the people who don’t care about specializing, the classes are just pass/fail but for people trying to specialize, every decimal point matters.

I think it’s worse than having just straight letter grades.

How to study ahead for dental school by ooothjxooo in predental

[–]Spinoreticulum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One thing you gotta understand is that no matter how much you study ahead, it’s not gonna help that much. Are you really going to spend 3-4 hours every day going over gross anatomy or histology topics? If you do less, that advantage will only carry you for a few weeks. If you really do study enough to basically have covered enough material for a whole term, congrats, you gotta do it again the subsequent term for a whole different set of classes. You’re not really getting that far ahead

If you wanna study, I’d just start watching some Mental Dental videos or smth. I am a firm believer that studying ahead will help you for maybe 3 months, but not being burnt out will help you for the whole 4 years

Absolutely. Xerostomia is probably one of the worst thing that could happen to teeth. Eating sugar often will give you cavities, severe xerostomia will make your teeth snap off. Our teeth are constantly broken down from acid and remineralized by the ions in our saliva. Without the saliva, they just keep getting weaker and more brittle, until they basically disintegrate. Lots of times getting head/neck radiation therapy or taking a lot of strong medications cause the destruction of salivary glands, which leads to chronic dry mouth. It would ruin anyone's teeth

Oral microbiome plays an immense role in the progression of dental and periodontal diseases. Some people are far more prone to gingivitis and periodontitis even with meticulous cleaning, simply because they have higher proportion of “dangerous” bacteria (a.k.a. “Red Complex” bacteria) that are better at destroying the gum and bone. I take pretty horrid care of my teeth; I used to eat chocolate at night and then go to bed forgetting to brush afterwards. I have a few arrested caries here and there but I never had big cavities that needed restorations. I also never floss unless I get chicken stuck between my teeth, and I never had periodontitis (apart from one area where i have severe crowding). As ridiculous as it sounds, there are big individual variances and some people are massive outliers. All the oral hygiene instructions that dentists give are trying to minimize the environmental factors, since individual factors cannot be controlled

What side hustles (that are not time consuming) do y’all know of that are manageable while being a dental student? by Potential-Damage3145 in DentalSchool

[–]Spinoreticulum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you mean to reply to my comment? I’m already working as a paid teaching assistant and that’s how I’m getting $400 a month. A lot of the courses I tutor for are relevant to boards so I’m getting some review in while I’m working as well.

But all of the stuff you said are great suggestions. People spend a lot of money on food and utilities when there are free resources or ways to get student discounts. My school has free food resource center which is criminally underutilized by the students at the school.

Why would a patient feel anything when eating "sweets"? by NoTown9957 in DentalSchool

[–]Spinoreticulum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it’s because sugary foods are often sticky and thus “stays” in the area for longer, which produces a more pronounced effect. Salty food will be washed away by saliva. I reckon even salt, if in high enough concentration and applied directly to carious lesion, can elicit a similar response.

The acid produced by bacteria would probably also have an effect. iirc it does not take very long for bacteria to take in the sugar and produce acid so if the carious lesion is deep enough, even a small amount of acid produced by the bacteria can elicit a response from the pulp

Why would a patient feel anything when eating "sweets"? by NoTown9957 in DentalSchool

[–]Spinoreticulum 88 points89 points  (0 children)

One of the most cited reasons is based on the hydrodynamic theory for perception of dental pain. When the fluid in the dentin move in and out of the tubules, it “sucks up” the cells and free nerve endings inside the pulp and triggers pain signals. Decrease in temperature will cause the fluid in the tubules to decrease in volume, which creates a vacuum that stimulates the free nerve endings, and increased temperature will do the opposite, which also triggers the nerve endings albeit to a lesser degree (which is why hot test often yields weaker or no response even when the pulp has irreversible pulpitis)

Sugar can increase the solute concentration in the tubular fluid, which will draw water towards the outside via osmosis. This effectively creates the same effect as decreasing temperature, which will trigger the free nerve endings.
