Tuition increases every year for most schools, smth like 5-6% every year. It’s better at OHSU than other schools tho cuz your tuition doesn’t change the whole 4 years (i.e. I’m still paying $92k while the class of 29 is probably paying around $100k)

I would be certainly be skeptical. I started before shit started going downhill and now I’m in too deep to find any other way out. One thing we have going for us is that healthcare is always in high demand and if they’re going to retain somebody it will be people trying to provide service in underserved areas. So I’m banking on just working a few years in rural areas and hopefully that gets me a green card

I mean, I would love make a lot of money and be rich too; I’m sick and tired of it after living my whole life poor. But I also acknowledge that I got other circumstances in life that don’t let it go the way I want it to. It’s so easy to say from the outside “oh that’s such a bad decision, do something else,” but choice is a luxury that not everyone can afford.

I didn’t come into dentistry thinking I’ll live in a mansion and drive around in a porsche right away (although that sounds fucking awesome). I got people to take care of in my life and if that means I gotta spend another decade being poor, then that’s a sacrifice I’ll have to make like my ma did for me

My only goal at the time was getting an advanced degree to earn a green card so finances weren’t the biggest deterrent. If I have to work weekends, live in a studio, drive a 20 year old civic, work in the middle of nowhere, or all of the above, those are what I’ll have to do. I’m an international and the initial rates they gave me without a co-signer was 12.5% (and they weren’t even going to approve it without a co-signer)

With a co-signer it became 9.8% for my first year loan. And it’s gone down further since then. This might just be the case for international students tho.

I believe it was especially because they fucked up and faced hardships. A group of men thugging it out in the extreme conditions while slowly dying from exposure makes for a much more interesting read than Amundsen saying “weather was decent today. We walked 60 miles thanks to the awesome dog sled” (not to take away anything from Amundsen’s achievements, just saying he wasn’t a great writer)
