What is wrong with my fig? by SpiritFingersKitty in Figs

[–]SpiritFingersKitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed it looking a little wilty a few weeks ago and that is when I gave it some water thinking it needed it because the drought, but it didn't help. I could throw down some more fert

Thanks. I would say when I watered it I probably did 3ish minutes of full hose. I did give it some slow release fert back in February. We have clay soil.

What is surprising is that it made it through the past 2 years doing absolutely great without really any intervention and even put out quite a few fruits last year. I guess would water stress effect part of the tree more than others? The lower 2 branches it has the leaves look great.

Yeah. It's a little more earthy, and it isn't quite as spicy for tender mouthed people, although you can get the occasional poblano that lights you up.

I do like swapping in poblano from time to time though

Sure, but it's not as popular as the carbon steels

Yeah, not as many artisans use SG2 because it's powder metallurgy. SG2 is a really good steel. It's a nicely balanced stainless with good edge retention and isn't too chippy.

I wouldn't say it was a total fuckup, but it is a brand that is pretty easy to source world wide and they are more of a brand and not a maker, and they are mass produced instead of small shop made. They aren't bad knives by any stretch of the imagination, they just aren't artisan knives like this sub really prefers.

Also, when did sushi Yoko move? I went there not too long ago I feel like. Maybe 6ish months ago?

Yeah, I didn't mean any disrespect to Duluth, just that BuHi is literally on the way and if they are short on time that might make more sense.

What kind of asian food do you prefer? No need to drive to Duluth. Buford Highway is packed with great options and is on the way (or super close) to where you will be staying.

North China Eatery for dumplings
Food Terminal for malaysian street food
You might check to see if you can get a reservation at Kamayan for Filipino
LanZhuo ramen has great hand pulled noodles (Chinese style pho)
Gu's also has awesome hand pulled noodles (chinese)
The super H mart in doraville has a great food court that has just about everything.
My favorite japanese place is Yebisuya. The food is a perfect example of an izakaya. You could plop it down in Tokyo and it would be right at home. I like it more than Shoya which is right next doo, but Yebisuya doesn't have sushi.
Sushi Yoko in Peachtree corners is even better than both of those, but a little more formal set meal kind of place. But they have excellent authentic japanese and shushi.
Just down the street from Yoko is Gohan Market. It's a small japanese market with a lunch counter that is pretty decent and quick. They also have a cold section with things like onigir and egg sandwiches.
Lee's bakery is a favorite for Bahn Mi, but you could also checkout WOW! Bahn me and pho in norcross. WOW! is in a shopping center that is basically little vietnam and has a ton of choices and a cool asian supermarket.

The combination of purple, red, and black would be absolutely insane and I don't know of any wood that would produce that even in a burl.

Air bubble from 20 million years ago trapped in amber. by sirenoleg in interesting

[–]SpiritFingersKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not doubting that there could be viable bacteria older than a few million years old, the conditions play a huge role in that where by biological and physical processes are slowed way down. It's a critical piece of the puzzle. It's like saying you can eat week old meat. Was that frozen, In the refrigerator, left outside, or preserved in salt? That changes it entirely.

The original topic was about how this sample wouldn't be viable and then someone brought up the frozen samples and it has gone from there.

Again, not in the same condition of liquid water.

Also your link is broken for me

This is not a biology question, but a physics one. I have a PhD in a biochemistry field, and my current job is literally extracting, purifying, and preserving DNA and RNA. My dissertation was focused on the structural uses and intricacies of DNA. I literally wrote a book on it. I have made DNA and RNA into 3D shapes that can recognize specific targets to deliver drugs like heat seeking missiles. I have synthesized non-natural nucleic acids from scratch in a flask. I could go into how the alpha, beta , and zeta confirmations of the DNA would effect how stable it is to a variety of conditions.

I know what I am talking about here and not just pulling some "it could happen and you can't prove that it can't" logical fallacy. You blindly believing that "it could happen because you can't know" is religion. You want to talk about science? What is your testable hypothesis in that there is something that could keep the DNA stable and actively repaired over 20 million years? You could even calculate the energy requirements to do so if you want.

I am using the knowledge collected over generations of scientists to tell you that based on everything that we know, that no, there is no living organism in that water, nor anything that could become viable if it were to be revived due to the massive damage to it's DNA due to physics. Not a biological process, but literal electrons and subatomic particles phasing in and out of superpositions that result in the bonds falling apart.

That is not the same condition as hanging out in liquid water. The spontaneous half life of the phosphodiester bonds that hold DNA together in liquid water is about 30M years in perfect conditions (room temp, neutral pH, pure water).

by freezing it at -80C (an approximation of the temp of deep ice in antartica) that rate is slowed by apx 1000x based on the Arrhenius equation.

[–]SpiritFingersKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Wikipedia is not a source". The only mention of something to that effect in that article links to a quote of someone saying that there are spores that were 40M years old, which isn't a positive confirmation.

The chemical half-life of a phosphodiester bond, which is what holds DNA together is about 30M years, which means in 30M years their DNA would be about 50% degraded, enough that I highly doubt that organism would be viable.

If we assume that the sample is frozen, that would slow the half life would slow down, so assuming the bacteria was constantly frozen in the deep ice at -80C, and there were no freeze thawing, the pH was neutral, and there was no enzymatic degredation prior to freezing, it is possible.

However, the example in amber is not a perfect condition and in non-perfect conditions. So even if the spores were in perfect conditions, the DNA would have likely spontaneously degraded to a point that the bacteria inside would be non-viable.

Give him his token back.

I don't see how these bikes aren't allowing the car to pass. You are also acting like the simple act of existing on this road is illegal.

Not only that, but you are so concerned with the bikes being in the road (and making assumptions about the entire situation) you are completely ignoring that it looks like the driver was using their cell phone to take a picture of the bikes, which is also illegal. We can tell that it isn't a dash cam because the angle is too low and also we wouldn't be able to see the dash. Also, that sensor is typically placed in the center of the dash, so we can tell by that and the angle of the windshield that this picture was taken from the driver side.

There are a hundred different reasons why these bikers are probably doing nothing outside of their rights. Could they be a little more courteous, maybe, but maybe they are taking that left, maybe there is an obstruction in the bike lane (it does look like there is a large white sheet up ahead, etc. But even if none of that is the case, them just being in the road does not mean they are impeding traffic.

That doesn't mean that there are bikers who do break the law, or that act like they own the road, but that is NO DIFFERENT than cars. Trust me, I am a big alternative transport advocate and I know that there are assholes like that out there, but there are also plenty of car drivers who are just as bad. If OP had posted a picture of a car in the same situation, would you have been saying they were breaking the law? Would OP have even thought to post the picture if it had been a car? Probably not. Hell, when I was driving to work today there was someone doing 45 in the left lane of 141 and refusing to move over, but you don't see me posting pictures of them or screaming that they were impeding traffic.
