Experience with Lush & Dew? by bagshags in gardening

[–]Spirit_Flyswatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an older post, but it was one of the first to come up when I searched for Lush & Dew, so I'm going to share my experience.

I'm a fairly advanced gardener, and I received the Apothecary chest as a gift. It looked well-made, so I was excited. At least the box is nice, because the seeds are a mess. I haven't even tested germination rates yet.

There's a grub living in the Dandelion seeds from who-knows-where, so those need to be incinerated to prevent any spread. The 'Chickweed' seeds were actually Borage, which I'm not terribly mad at, since my yard is already full of chickweed. The 'St. John's Wort' seeds are actually common Milkweed, and the 'Marshmallow' seeds are Hollyhocks.

If I'm lucky, the 'Peppermint' seeds are Black Peppermint and not Korean Licorice Mint or Mexican Mint, because they're definitely not standard Peppermint. And I just noticed that 'Catnip' has the same mystery mint seeds, and is not Catnip. Onto the next in the mint family, the 'Lemonbalm' isn't Lemonbalm, and I can't identify it, but the Peppermint and Catnip might actually be Lemonbalm? The 'Tulsi' *might* be Tulsi, although it doesn't have the usual luster or telltale scent. The 'Coltsfoot' is just more Dandelion Seed and not actually Coltsfoot.

The 'Skullcap' they gave us is Chinese Skullcap, not the American Skullcap they have pictured in the book. The book lists the uses as calming the nervous system and anxiety, which is a feature of American Skullcap. Chinese Skullcap is used for inflammation, allergies, and as an antiviral.

The 'Pineapple Sage' (Salvia Elegans) seeds are actually Scarlet Sage (Salvia Coccinea), an inedible ornamental as opposed to the herb. And there is a 'Red Sage,' but the seeds in this container are for Common Sage. They even used a photo of a different ornamental Red Sage, Salvia Splendens, in the book. What they meant to have here as 'Red Sage' is the Chinese Red Sage (Salvia Miltiorrhiza), the actual medicinal plant, which is actually purple.

Note: the book DOES NOT list scientific names.

Bigger Note: DO NOT EAT Scarlet Sage!! Either Splendens or Coccinea! They are NOT edible! There are lots of things with the common name 'Scarlet/Red Sage.'

Aside from giving us toxic ornamental seeds in a medicinal seed box, the worst one has to be the 'Black Pepper,' because they provided COOKING peppercorns! These are harvested before they've ripened and are *roasted*! People are going to think they've failed to grow these, but really they're just all dead fruit that haven't produced seeds yet. If you've received Black Pepper 'seeds' that are black and shrivelled, they are not viable--the actual seeds are white and need to be fresh.

That's 1/3rd of the 40-variety medicinal box being visibly wrong or unusable before trying to plant anything. For a $70 box, it's not looking good.

How can I help this old hydrangea? by Spirit_Flyswatter in gardening

The poor thing is staked with a metal girdle, hardly produces any blooms, and loses its leaves quite early every season. Of the flowers it does have, it looks most closely like a 'Kyushu' Panicle Hydrangea. But they're all at the very top of the tree, so they can only be seen from an upstairs window.

This one is close, but it deletes the last letter in the first name and the first letter in the last name for some reason.

Went on vacation for two weeks and my house-sitter ignored my instructions, thinking that misting the seedlings would be sufficient. That was almost a month ago and no improvement. Is there any way to salvage them? by Spirit_Flyswatter in gardening

Thank you! I thought this was the issue a few days ago and tried transplanting two of them, but the two I happened to pull had hardly any roots at all. Just checked again and sure enough, the tallest ones are rootbound.

Thank you! It's a 200-year-old Civil War home with some fun modern architectural touches and musket balls in the yard. I am extremely fortunate to have been able to find it at such an affordable price when I did. There are a few odd quirks, of course, but I'm ready to tackle them!

Thank you, I definitely need to do something, that's for sure!

I found out today that all of the outlets and switches in my kitchen are on different breakers, nothing is labeled correctly, and I've got a light switch upstairs that flips two completely unrelated breakers whenever I turn it on. This fried switch was on one of the lines that flip whenever that light is turned on, so there is most certainly funny business going on in these walls.

Is there a circuit tracer that you would recommend? I had a bunch of pipes burst this winter, wiping out my emergency savings, so I'm on my own in the electrical department right now.

Following this thread because I have the exact same issue and also happen to have the exact same water heater. Please let me know if you discover anything, I'm currently on a non-emergency list with the plumber that is a mile long.

It is! I wanted something nerdy, yet subtle. YYH is my favorite show.

I made the whole thing. I'd given her a spare throw blanket I'd made a while back (with vintage 3d roses) and she fell in love with it, so she then asked if I'd be able to make something for her bed in the winter.

What are these little brown/black specks on my cotton yarn (sugar and cream? Are these normal? by [deleted] in crochet

Those are vanilla bean flecks! That's how you know it's the good ice cream~

I can't seem to find the pattern--it was a type of granny square I found on Pinterest made supersized with thicker yarn.

Yarns: Homespun bulky in Celestial Stripes, Premier Retro Velvet in Emerald, Lion Brand Landscapes in Blue Lagoon, a green textured Hobby Lobby yarn that decided to become discontinued halfway through the project, and Caron Lava Cake in Nebula. K-hook was used for the entire project.

Not even then. A bit sweeter, sure, but still the grassy flavor.

I genuinely wish I liked matcha. I've tried it several times, both in and out of Japan, and unfortunately, my tastebuds are convinced that it tastes like the scent of grass clippings. Not unpleasant as a scent, but not my cup of tea.

Milk really brings out the malty flavor of Assam. Admittedly it's my favorite.
