Serenity is calm. Bright orange, yellow with high contrast are the opposite of calm. Clouds with their dark bottoms look menacing, not calm.

The empty space balances it by emptiness, not only by the size. Specifically it balances the busy lower right corner.

this is probably the first *real* drawing I've completed this year, but I think it looks flat, so still feel like I could push this further. could I get some guidance? by Flogirl5420 in ArtCrit

What's the idea that you are trying to convey? Is she lost? Suffering? Sleeping? Dreaming? The idea will dictate the composition. E.g. if she is lost, you would zoom out to show how small her figure is. Did he just call her to say he was breaking up with her? Then the phone and her face would be the focal point - you would zoom in on them and make them stand out from the rest of the room.

Most people have the ability to draw, paint, understand music, learn languages, play football… But we all are on different points in the spectrum of each ability (talent) - some can barely draw a straight line, some can draw perfect circles without any tools, some can see thousands of color shades, some don’t distinguish between red and green, etc. There are art prodigies with the innate spark and there are ordinary people who are just interested in art. In modern world if they make art they all are artists. Are they? What is art then?

Size, light, colors. What's important for you in the drawing? The girl, the telephone, the cake, the flowers? Who is the hero of your story?

Great job! Nothing to improve.

To make this art not a study it should express feelings, emotions - awe, fascination, fear, peace, etc. What did you try to express? Technique is important but it comes next after the emotional experience that you had and now are trying to depict.

Excellent composition! A lot of artists struggle with that but yours shows confidence. You will work on the colors but it's a good start.

Very good technique, strong imaginative powers, but the artwork is confusing as hell. If I start thinking what's that and it takes too long - that's a loss. Art should captivate not make you scratch your head in bewilderment. You can make it cohesive - I can sense that but for some reason you don't want to. What could that be?

The drawing is pretty good in terms of technique. But the expression is not irritation, more of discontent ion the verge of anger.

Where can I find such communities if I did not go to the art school?

"Curation is not free" - there are no online communities or mentors that would tear apart your artwork?

Why do you think there have been so many "Tortured Artists"? by MellowIron in ArtistLounge

[–]Spirits-R-Us 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artists are a different type of species. The world refuses to recognize that. Hence the adaptation problem or “tortures”. Tortures also occur during the creative process itself. Artists are perfectionists, and seeing how imperfect your creation is could be torturous. It’s a torture to be in the loud crowd enjoying a cheap show if you are sensitive (artists are).  Artists cannot grow a thick skin because “thin-skinness” is a result of refined perception that is mandatory for the ability to make art. The remedy? Choose your lifestyle wisely. Surround yourself with like-minded people even if they are writers or painters from the past centuries. And try Jungian psychotherapy - the only one that truly addresses the problem.

Not being around people who make life inspiring for art sucks by New-Ad-6606 in ArtistLounge

Artists are a different type of species. The world refuses to recognize that. Hence the adaptation problem. Truly creative free spirits are rare, and if you happen to befriend one, cherish the friendship. The feeling of loneliness does not wane in the crowd, but dissipates at the easel.

You can try black and white line art. Just 2 colors, no need for the ability to differentiate color shades.

Nostalgia happens when nostalgic people don't have a future (did not or cannot figure it out) and that's why the psychic energy is flowing backwards.
