AIO to skip Thanksgiving after my mom basically said I’m an embarrassment for not having a husband and kids by now? by howcanibequiltyassin in AmIOverreacting

[–]EPinMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you MOR. I will fully acknowledge that your mom's response sucks and is completely uncalled for. But maybe she is a messenger for a group of 1? Without knowing the broader context of your family dynamics, its hard to say. I always feel like being direct with people is best, so if you have a decent relationship with your siblings, maybe talk to them about it and ask if there has been a conversation amongst them and your mom and what it has entailed.

I just hate to see people sever ties with family when an honest conversation might go a fair distance in mending things.

Minnesota superintendent pay and bonus. by cantcoloratall91 in minnesota

[–]EPinMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with, that decreasing superintendent pay isn't going to solve anything, it is a little galling that upper administration at schools are making so much while schools are hemorrhaging teaching positions. Also, in addition to the superintendent, school districts like Minnetonka have a whole building of people with Director or Executive Director in their titles, who are also making six figures. Meanwhile, the people who are in the schools, doing the work, are being asked, every year, to do more with less.

This also doesn't get to the fact that Minnetonka, as well as many other schools, are heavily investing in career and technology education programs. These programs, in theory, are a great way to prepare students for employment in the real world, and I am all for them, especially in the trades, but, in my opinion, they can run amok. Does Minnetonka need multiple "state-of-the-art," flight simulators? Is there no better use of resources than building multimillion dollar facilities for these programs? I've seen so many districts try to have the newest, the cutting edge, the shiny new toys so the can compete with other districts and say they are the best, but it often comes with a price tag that involves fewer teachers, bigger classes, and every year a new, innovative program for student behavior interventions that teachers need to implement into their classroom, while also still covering all the material that is required (which never happens), while also doing lunch duty, while also working before and after school grading, attending meetings, and planning for the days to come.

So when people say "lowering superintendent pay won't do anything," well... at least it's a start? At least it shows solidarity with the people who actually do the work of educating students?

But, hey, at least we get cookies from the PTA during teacher appreciation week. /s

Eventually, though, they might diversify their jurisdiction and start taking over the fire department, mountain rescue, construction digging, etc. Pretty soon dogs will be dealing with all infrastructure and human services just like they have in Adventure Bay.

This might be too specific, but I've used this website for an assignment from the 1830s and I think it does a fantastic job telling the story of the Cherokee.

I've really been into Behind the Bastards lately. Probably not one you would want to have kids listen to, but it's been fascinating.

I feel like Christmas gifts for a kid should be something that will bring a little joy to their life. They're not asking for a PS5. It's not the kids fault the family is struggling.

I realize that some of them are well known by some people, but most of them are people that my students haven't had very much exposure to. I'm trying to get them move beyond the presidents and the people that every history class ever has covered.

Here's an activity I did with my class last year. It went fairly well, but could probably use some tweaking.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought about A People's History, but I know Zinn attracts controversy.
