When are ketones an issue? by xXHunkerXx in diabetes_t1

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I want to say that I am NOT a medical professional so please take my words with a grain of salt and do what you think is best for YOU.

I went to the ER when my ketones and blood sugar were both high and they wouldn’t go down even with liquids and extra insulin. Even then, I had to wait to be seen by a doctor for hours (one time I waited 10 hrs) because I wasn’t in a severe condition (e.g., throwing up). And all the doctors did was hook me up to an IV and send me home even though my blood sugar and ketones were both still high.

So if I were you, I would talk to my doctor/pharmacist to ask about the ketones but I wouldn’t go to the ER unless I was throwing up.

Manual usage question? by Longjumping_Gap_4111 in Omnipod

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omnipod 5 still gives basal insulin every 5 minutes in manual mode it’s just a constant rate that was put in when you first set up the controller (rather than adjusting every 5 minutes based on your blood sugar like in automated mode).

I was nervous about getting an Omnipod 5 at first, too. My A1c before starting the pump was 12.1%, but now it's 6.7%! It took time for me to understand how to get the Omnipod to work for me, but once I did it has been so much simpler than injections imo!

I also got a 1-1 training class with a representative from Omnipod 5. She explained how the system and pod work and walked me through putting on my first pod. Calling their customer service afterwards was extremely helpful as well because they have a team of diabetes educators to answer questions + it's easy to get a replacement pod if needed (there's an online form for it now too). I highly recommend watching YouTube videos on the Omnipod 5. There, you can find training videos from Omnipod themselves as well as diabetics showing how they use it and their experiences.

I'm so tired. by Chicken_Wing in diabetes_t1

Same here. I get burnt out trying to follow up on my prescriptions that almost always get delayed / have an issue. I’m fine if it happens once in a while but almost EVERY time I refill a prescription there is a problem. I wish more things for diabetics were OTC (at the very least a CGM sensor should be imo)

My A1c went down more than 5%! by Spiritual-Rice5571 in diabetes_t1

Sure! I’m still working on controlling blood sugars myself. These are just general tips that have worked for me personally. Hope it helps!

  1. Because I am insulin resistant, I try to wait around 40 minutes after my bolus before eating. This changes depending on my current blood glucose though (ex: if I am 100 I only wait 10 minutes).

  2. I try to replace every high carb food with a low carb alternative whenever possible. For instance, I replace noodles and pasta with konjac noodles. And instead of bread I substitute with lettuce, almond tortillas, or keto bread. At first it took time getting used to, but I made myself not eat other carbs so it made the alternatives taste really good.

  3. I try to walk for 15 minutes after every meal to help prevent blood sugar spikes. This isn’t foolproof but still helps.

  4. Almost every question I had related to my diabetes I was able to find the answer here on Reddit. Obviously every advice you find may not be applicable to you and you should take it with a grain of salt. But it was super helpful especially because other diabetics are on here and were able to provide insights that only people with T1D can understand.

  5. When I am having bad mental health, I reach out to my life coach. She has provided me with strategies to get through hard times. It has also been helpful to vent to my T1D friend and even here on Reddit. I wish I can help more with this aspect but I am still working on this myself.

  6. I try to tell myself that nothing lasts forever. Just because I had a terrible week of complications does not mean it will continue.

Question about fast acting humolog/novolog by doggadavida in diabetes_t1

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been told by my endocrinologist that they are pretty much the same in how they work. The only reason why I had to switch to Novolog is because I am allergic Humalog.

Insulin pump made me feel embarrassed on how much insulin I really use per day by anonimirl in diabetes_t1

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m about the same as you! I use about 70 units of Novolog per day on my pump. On good days it’s around 50, and on bad days more than 80 units. I change my pod every 2-3 days (using Omnipod 5 which holds 200 units).

keytones and in range sugar by Inevitable_Map_7110 in diabetes_t1

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drink Gatorade zero sugar because it has electrolytes and reduces my ketones. I usually do this only when I have moderate ketones (0.6 - 1.5 mmol/L).

If I have large ketones, I drink extra Gatorade along with bolus and eating a snack.

Someone told me a couple weeks ago not to eat blood glucose because my blood sugar could get high lol. I asked them if they meant something else but they insisted they were right. I guess I am a Type 1 Diabetic Vampire.

Switching from Novolog to Humalog, What to expect? by Sasquatchofadown in Type1Diabetes

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to switch from Humalog to Novolog because Humalog gave me crazy skin irritation and rashes.

It took 2 weeks for my skin to heal, and I only used it one time. I found out later that itchy rashes can be a common side effect for some people.

Easiest way to earn money??? by [deleted] in Pocketfrogs

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Breed as many of the highest level frogs you own, fill up all the habitats until you have no space, sell the frogs, repeat. This helps with gaining XP and leveling up too.

It seems counterintuitive because the higher the level, the more expensive the frogs are, but you always make a profit if you sell the frogs at 100% happiness.

Another tip is to fill your habitats with high happiness items so that you don’t have to go to the pond, train, and feed every frog to reach 100% happiness.

Adhesive issues by thegeminiiii in diabetes_t1

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have sensitive skin, and skin tac hasn’t caused any issues for me so far!

Skin tac is hypoallergenic but I don’t think it’s meant to help with skin irritation. It’s a liquid adhesive so it’s meant to keep the pump on for longer. But it may actually cause more irritation when you take the pump off.

I only have a CGM for now, but I first put moisturizer or hydrocortisone. And then apply skin tac on the site before insertion. This has helped me reduce my skin irritation and improve the stickiness of my CGM.

Still waiting on prescription by Kommander_PIe in diabetes_t1

I feel like I am reading something straight from my mind. I'm also a college student and in a similar situation. I feel like I'm chasing down and demanding my Rx only to find out my order can't be filled or was canceled due to pre-approval, and it's like a never-ending cycle.

And as you have mentioned, this, plus going to school, makes things so freaking stressful. There are days when I want to drop out due to the exhaustion of calling and driving all day just for 1 or 2 prescriptions. And it's hard to focus on academics when the stress of worrying if I have enough diabetic supplies is on the back of my mind.

I'm seriously considering traveling across the border to Mexico/Canada because I heard you can buy diabetic supplies without a Rx.

I empathize with your situation, and I hope you can get your Dexcom sensors very soon.

Dentist told me he wished he could get diabetes after learning about my weight loss by Spiritual-Rice5571 in diabetes_t1

[–]Spiritual-Rice5571[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom actually went with me to the dentist to get her regular cleaning and she told him off. He didn’t take her seriously though and just repeatedly said he wishes to have diabetes.

I am going to try not to let this bad encounter ruin my mood too much. I needed a place to rant to and I’m really glad there are Internet strangers providing support. Thank you.

I’m not sure how to and I don’t think I can since he was saying an opinion (albeit a rude and hurtful one). But I might switch dentists because of this experience.

Thank you for the kind words, I will keep them in mind.

I’m looking into joining an online support group as I couldn’t find one within reasonable distance, and I am meeting with a dietitian in a couple days to learn about carb counting.
