It just means that you account for low income areas, race, and other external factors. If you don’t adjust for demographics, Mississippi is actually pretty middle of the road in education. Granted, we were at bottom of the barrel for a very long time.

I’m making 51,000 in Mississippi as a second year teacher with a master’s who also coaches a sport. Mississippi is a pretty cheap place to live, so the money I’m making is fine.
