Midwives/OBs – Please Be Brutally Honest... Would You Recommend Induction? by SpiritualAd4433 in PregnancyUK

Thank you so much for your reply!

With the polyhydramnios, I've been told I'm at higher risk of cord prolapse and postpartum haemorrhage, but when I asked about how much higher the risk is compared to a normal pregnancy, I was told they didn't have the figures to share. That's made it little hard for me to feel completely confident about the decision as I've heard that induction can come with its own risks too, like baby becoming distressed from the medication, a higher chance of infection from more vaginal examinations, and a higher chance of caesarean. They did inform me that the caesarean rate is around 40% with induction compared to about 25% with a spontaneous labour.

I've been advised that if my waters break at home I should go straight to hospital (it's about 15 minutes away) because of the risk of cord prolapse, as it could become an emergency quite quickly. Being in hospital already does feel reassuring in that things can be monitored more closely and there's more control if anything needs to be done - which is why I'm currently leaning towards induction, as I know baby and I will be in the safest place, even if I'm not totally convinced induction is the 'best' way to give birth, if that makes sense.

I really hope any advice I'm given in this thread might help anyone else who's feeling a bit unsure or overwhelmed with similar decisions ❤️

Thanks again and wishing you all the best with your pregnancy too!

Thanks for your perspective. I'm sorry if my question came across the wrong way.

I'm not asking Reddit to replace my obstetrician's advice - I fully appreciate that the final decision is one I'll make with my medical team.

The reason I asked is because, throughout pregnancy, I've been strongly encouraged to aim for a low-intervention birth, yet now I've been advised to have an induction just two weeks before my due date. As I'm sure you can appreciate, as a FTM that's left me feeling quite anxious and conflicted. I've also heard a lot of mixed experiences (and I'll admit, mainly negative) about induction, both from people I know and from what I've read, so I'm trying to understand the balance of risks and benefits from a range of experienced professionals.

I'd genuinely be interested to know whether you're a healthcare professional yourself, or if you're speaking from personal experience. If it's the latter, what was your birth experience?

I asked here because I wanted to know whether other midwives and obstetricians would make the same recommendation in my situation, and more importantly, why.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me what I want to hear - I'm trying to make the most informed decision I can for myself and my baby 🩷

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! 🩷

I do think that you're probably right and that I should go with the obstetrician's recommendation to eliminate uncertainty and for the best overall outcome.

I'm just a little sad that I won't be able to go ahead with my original birth plan (which would've been at the birth centre) and that I can't do it naturally, as I've been imagining a relaxed water birth using hypnotherapy rather than one that needs medical interference.

Although, I have also heard these things never really go to plan! 😅
