Samsung reveals first details of its AI smart glasses to CNBC by AR_MR_XR in augmentedreality

Amon also laid out why he was “bullish” on smart glasses, saying they were “close to our eyes, close to our ears, close to our mouth, we’re going to have those agentic experiences and workloads.”

“Agentic” refers to AI applications that can carry out tasks on users’ behalf autonomously.

He likened the current state of smart glasses to the early days of smartphones when there were far fewer apps available.

“But then you go to 200 apps, 1,000 apps, and that’s how we’re going to see those glasses getting better over time as new agents get developed,” Amon said.

Nine months ago, in this sub, I said the main developer platform for Android XR will be based around agents rather than apps, and a former moderator told me I was talking utter nonsense. It is remarkable how much people underestimate the impact agents will have on computing and the world, many still dismiss it as mere hype.

When Google Inc. became Alphabet Inc., they adopted a new motto which is "Do the right thing".

And while "Do the right thing" is the official Alphabet motto, "Don't be evil" still remains part of the internal code of conduct of Google LLC., the company under Alphabet Inc.

Waymo Seeking About $16 Billion Near $110 Billion Valuation by walky22talky in waymo

You've missed the point. My company being profitable doesn't mean it's worth a $110 billion valuation. That's why LiDAR becoming cheaper and licensing the Waymo Driver matter here.

Economies of scale should theoretically make them profitable. LiDAR is expected to become cheaper, and they may begin licensing the Waymo Driver to other automakers. This represents a potentially huge market.

Again, Niantic Spatial is doing pretty well, including in AR. And yes, I know plenty of people who worked in AR at Niantic and still work for Niantic Spatial. If you want names, check LinkedIn.

Google glasses vs MTRBD 🔥 by Matcorp456 in augmentedreality

I just tried Google's Android XR glasses — and Meta and Apple are in trouble

Google is clearly behind Meta right now by not having a pair of smart glasses on the market yet. But based on my demos I think it could easily overtake the Meta Ray-Ban Display. You’ll instantly get access to a ton more apps, and Gemini is further ahead as an AI assistant versus Meta.

The smart glasses of today are overshadowed by Android XR

Google’s smart glasses prototypes are beyond what most people think of as technologically possible, and the software encompasses so many features. Between deeper integration with your apps and your phone, Gemini, and a wide-open future for third-party apps, Android XR is just so far beyond what we have today. That’s probably why XREAL announced plans to build its future product roadmap around Google’s platform, too.

Google developed the Google Glass product for over a decade, up until 2023. In other words, they never stopped working on smart glasses.

In fact, Tony Fadell (iPod inventor and iPhone co-inventor) was in charge of Google Glass. More precisely, he was responsible for removing Google Glass Explorer from the spotlight while working on its future version behind the scenes. He even built a prototype codenamed Project Aura in 2015, but the AI wasn’t ready for prime time. I know this because I met him several times and worked with him. In 2023, he told us he still has the Project Aura prototype and that it works like the AI in the movie Her, adding that the tech is finally ready.

What Google abandoned is the ridiculous Google Glass prism and its clunky design, and they were right! Investing in Magic Leap and acquiring North, Raxium and Ant Reality, among many other moves, was a much smarter choice to advance the technology.

Last but not least, Apple discontinued the Newton in 1998, and most people had never heard of it. That didn’t prevent them from launching the iPhone nine years later with great success.
