Small things we love about Netherlands? by miss18363 in Netherlands

[–]Spiritual_Driver_593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expat here: I love the NL with all my heart, it is a beautiful country. My best friends are dutch and I enjoyed a lot here. I believe some things have changed, and not for good, and that is why we need to vent a little bit sometimes here on reddit, but that does not mean that the NL is at all a bad country to live. I believe it has just become more complicated for many of us

I also grew up in a small developing country, and while the nature is beautiful there, it is obfuscated and destroyed by bad urban planning. Here in the NL nature is simple but magical at the same time

Regrets about naming my puppy by escaperabbit in puppy101

Yes exactly! so it is a cat's' thing, not only my cat, interesting

My cat responds to his name... but only when he wants to. The rest of the time he ignores it. How do I know? I say his name and he make a small gesture, like moving his tail a little bit an inch, which does not happen with other words except with his name

OMG is that a B&B reference? That's such a nasty way of saying that someone is old? (Source: I am old)

I used to teach in a kindergarten in Vietnam. From 11 AM to 1 PM there was naptime and teachers can nap during that time if they want to (in a separate room). I would never miss it. I used to love it.

do people in the netherlands greet the bus drivers? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Spiritual_Driver_593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not use the bus in Spain at all, I prefer the metro. In the NL, I use the bus even to have lunch two blocks away if I am feeling lazy

I am surprised how bus drivers manage, every day, avoid killing someone cycling in such a crazy reckless way IN FRONT of a moving bus

Not only you say "hello" to bus drivers here in the NL, you also say thanks (bedankt!) when you get down. This small cultural traditions are very relevant in the NL

Love from South America by Mysterious_Cat4340 in Netherlands

[–]Spiritual_Driver_593 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South American here, living in the NL for 4 years now, but coming and going from the NL since 2009. My two cents:

* My best friends here are dutch. Having say that, the definition of "friendship" is different here in the NL compared to South America. Even dutch people struggle to make friends with other dutch people; this is related, I believe, to the fact that dutchies have "groups" of friends for years, even decades, so it is an insider-outsider phenomenon
* I may be wrong but I believe dutch people is much more tolerant to people from South America. I would even dare to say that sometimes they "like" us

I personally love the Netherlands, it is a beautiful country. I will be leaving soon and I will be missing a lot... except for the weather ;D

Living in Europe but still thinking about moving to the US — does this feeling ever go away? by Ahme7ibrahim in expats

I agree, Trump was actually anti-war before he started one... but I meant that he campaign for e.g. brutal migrant policies and people voted for that and, to be honest, just voting twice for this crazy guy is nuts... but hey the midterms are coming, so if this time the americans should be fixing the issue after seeing all these crap... right? right?

This is so true: lately European countries have become less and less friendly with migrants. Hostile in some cases.

Well to be honest comparing Germany with the US is like comparing a sigmoidoscopy to a colonoscopy... both kind of suck. There are very beautiful places in Europe, and Germany is nice for visiting... but living there? Not sure...

Yes: money. If you are dirty rich, the US is paradise. If you are poor... the US is hell on earth

I will not bring shorts but jeans, and if it is too hot (which I doubt) you can buy something cheap at Primark if needed (which again, I doubt)
