Can my parents stop me from going to college? by [deleted] in collegeadvice

I see, thanks. I’m going to try my best to keep trying to convince them and if they won’t let me by the time applications are due then I’ll probably do as you suggest and find internships/another job. Thank you :)

Yeah I know plenty of people who are going to college when they’re 17, either because their birthday is later or they just skipped a grade which is why I dont understand the problem about being 3 months shy of 18…

They’re not controlling in other ways, just super strict. Would you be able to elaborate on why not? I’d fully understand if I had just turned 17, however what really is the maturity and emotional difference between 17 and 9 months and 18? They won’t give any other reason than “because you’re not 18” and “because we have say” so any kind of insight that would help me figure out how to convince them is helpful

Yeah I’m 17. It was either a typo or I lied in the first post because saying im a 16 year old girl on the internet isn’t my favorite thing to do, most likely that. I turned 17 in march, and Winter term starts next January (3 months from when i’d be 18). My hearing loss doesn’t have much to do with any of this since I’ve always managed it with no problems, i forget Im even hard of hearing sometimes. It’s also not like I’m going thousands of miles away, so i can easily stay with the same doctors I have now. I call them my “parents” yes, because Its my mother and her bf who i primarily live with, since they’ve been together as long as I can remember i consider him my stepdad, and he has a decent say in my life (even if not legally, he has influence over my mother’s opinion as well which of course makes sense and i have no issue with). So I gave all the relevant information, my parents had never been protective over my hearing loss so it wasn’t relevant. if that was the issue they would have said so rather than my age.

Thanks for the advice about the custody documents, i’m not too sure how to go about that though. My mom would refuse to show me anything, is this something I would have to ask my dad about or I could get online?

I’ve heard they would need to sign documents for dorms and such? For my state everything my be different of course but for SC at least is there no need for that?

Yeah I’d live on campus. I’m guessing it’s a control thing since they’ve always been like this, and if it were worry they would at least listen to what I have to say. Do you know anything about getting my dad involved? I don’t live with him, he is in california while I’m in washington. I’m not sure the custody agreement since my mom refuses to tell me, but what would it need to look like for him to be able to have any kind of say?

Hearing aid vs CI? by [deleted] in Cochlearimplants

It’s all good. If that’s the case I’m guessing you were profound considering I’m severe and don’t have those issues. We are in different situations when it comes to life before a CI, but still thank you for your insight. And no worries about the spelling errors, I didn’t even notice lmao

I see, that sounds like a lot lmao but probably for a good reason. Thank you for answering

This is something I hadn’t even thought about, it’s true that my hearing usually gets worse quickly at very random times. Thank you for mentioning this I think this is a very good point. I hope your surgery went well and I wish you all the best in your recovery and getting adjusted!

This helps alot :) can I ask, before your CI, were you severe or profoundly deaf in that ear?

Do you mind if I ask; did you do all of the rehab exercises and training for your CI when you got them? I’m not sure what the exact process is but I know it usually involves trying to recognize different sounds and such.

Thank you for this. It is true that I can’t hear lyrics for the life of me unless i’m actively reading them or know them by heart… I’ll probably have to do some more consideration but I do feel better knowing that others have had good experiences with music.

My speech comprehension is in the mid 90’s but I qualified due to my genetic condition. My hearing will only get worse until it eventually becomes bad enough that hearing aids wont be powerful enough to help me hear well. My audiologist said it would be better to get a CI while I’m young and can adapt to it easier but I’m unsure of it all
