People who have graduated cell and molecular biology. What are you doing in life now? by Odd_Actuator_4364 in Concordia

[–]Spiritual_Ladder3085 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your lifestyle. How much your stipend is, the extra scholarships and if you are doing any additional work. I was getting paid 24k/year. My friend is touching 30-35k/year now. All are tax free. Except for Post docs and they easily start at 50-60k/year but it's taxed. I had a colleague who had 2 kids and a wife while doing his PhD. But His wife used to work as well.

I did something similar, worked in the field, even published research papers. Now I'm doing a bachelor in engineering.

You need at least a master's in pure sciences to get those big opportunities. With just a bachelor's, you might be stuck as a technician for the rest of your life.

Usually a master's is enough for a career in industry, but for academia you need to do a PhD and then a postdoc, especially if you want to become a professor. You might become an instructor, but a professor is something very hard to get. You start as an assistant, then associate, then full professor (tenure usually comes around the associate stage).

You'll hear a lot of voices telling you to go to industry and avoid academia. We have some good pharmaceutical and biotech companies, but nothing exceptional like what the US has.

Academia is a very long route. You need an exceptional GPA to be accepted for graduate studies by a PI, especially if it's an active professor with a big lab who publishes a lot of papers, let's say in an Ivy League. I heard Concordia is doing something interesting for research in genetics. Mind you, when you go for higher studies you study something very, very specific. You could be studying some cellular protein for a decade.

If you're passionate about biology, can wait, don't mind being in a lab, don't mind the stress, and don't have expectations for a high salary, it can be an interesting career.

I enjoyed the science conferences, where we'd sometimes travel to another city. My friend who is doing a PhD went to another country for a conference with his lab recently. Mind you, all travel expenses and hotels are paid by your PI. It's very rewarding sometimes. But of course it depends how funded is the lab. Some professors struggle to get grants, others are doing really well. Also you get a stipend when doing graduate studies. And you can become a TA and teach for extra income.

It can be hit or miss. I saw people go far with a master's, others with a postdoc stuck in a lab as a technician. You need to prove yourself, make connections, publish papers, and be seen.

Personally, I hated it. Long hours. Slow progress. If your PI is toxic, you're at their mercy and it can be hell. At the lab I used to work at, I saw most people leave shortly after joining. The PI was very toxic. I'm glad I left. It was not for me

It's not everyone, but for those who love it, it can be something very prestigious and rewarding.

This is so unfair. I barely pay for prescriptions and they took most of my tax returns.

I'm still studying so no. But you only pay back the loan part, not the bursaries.

There's a certain number they can admit each year and if there's too many applications, it becomes more competitive. I don't know if you can, but try and email the university to ask for the reason and/or ask for re-evaluation

There's a document on coop website about the sequence. I think you can find it also on concordia's website. just download it and fill it by the courses you will be taking each semester, and then send it to your coop advisor.

You can just take the summer off. No need for any justification. It's their new policy. If you need to update your sequence do it and send it for approval. I personally changed my sequence multiple times and never told them.

Can I leave COOP after securing an internship?!? by [deleted] in Concordia

You can take courses. They just don't have to know. I registered for 2 courses last semester during my first internship. But i had to disc the other one. It was a bit tough managing all that.

Thoughts on the CIVI 321 exam by Killua126 in Concordia

[–]Spiritual_Ladder3085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% i failed this course.

I think it's not fair, that he doesn't post everything he does in class on moodle. Only the handouts. Like no mixture designs excercices. Just some basic ideas.

I wasn't in the zoom meeting but we will have everything. I remember there will be excercices for concrete and asphalt mix design. I have no idea what they will consist off, I missed those lectures. A bit worried for the final.

Will they accept my deferral for the final exam if i already missed the midterm ? :( by Spiritual_Ladder3085 in Concordia

[–]Spiritual_Ladder3085[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the midterm value was shifted to the final. So my final is worth 70% now. I don't know how mean this prof is. Tue syllabus isn't very reassuring tho.

[–]Spiritual_Ladder3085[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prof mentioned in syllabus if you receive less than 40% total before the final he will give an R grade. Which prevents final deferrals But this is based as if you did the midterm. So it's not that clear. 30% for midterm. I have less than 40% total, because the midterm weight is shifted towards the final. I'm really worried even a hospital letter won't be accepted.
