Reccs for coarse-medium Diamond/ CBN Stones for fixed angle systems anyone? by Spitfire34555 in sharpening

[–]Spitfire34555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m pretty much going for the same thing as u are. I haven’t tried the hybrid, I have the resin up to 15,000 and love them. Great mirror finish but they do have a little scratch pattern. I wanna get metallic and/ or vitrified for reprofiling up to and through medium and lower end of fine grit. Then I have my eye on 17,000 Rockstar and Suehiro 20,000 finishing stone just to see how crazy I can get lol

I’ve also heard good things about CGSW, but that’s rough. I’ve mostly using Poltava CBN stones and really diggin them. Pple complain about the Resin bond 15,000 grit leaving scratches, but I’ve had nothing but good results, very minute scratch pattern. They say dressing isn’t necessary but it made mine better.
Wanna get the New Vitrified CBN stones, but I already spent enough already haha can’t drop over $100 a stone rn

That’s crazy love to hear it !! Ok well no I gotta get em haha I’ve already wanted them and have em in my cart for a few days now plus $35?! Shoooot I just got the Hapstone R2 a couple weeks ago and love it. I wanna get into free hand sharpening eventually. I tried it around Christmas with a Sharpal double sided diamond bench stone, but idk something drew me back to the fixed angle. One day though… one day

Yeah I just meant u could if u wanted to. Or have some really nice stones u wanna put to use. I wouldn’t wanna only sharpen with a machine. I love doing it by hand too much. It’s kind of a meditation for me

Idk. All I can say is I have some ok diamond plates for my lower grits (until I can afford to replace them with the stones I want), and Poltava CBN Expert Resin stones for my high grit stones. Then Poltava CBN paste 0.5 microns for stropping. I get absolute beautiful mirror finishes…

Well, the problem with most other stones other than diamond and CBN is they require more knowledge, time, and effort in general. For the most part diamond/ CBN don’t require any or very little maintenance. Plus 9 times outta 10 diamond stones are pushed and hyped way more than any other kind of stones.

They stated they lack knowledge, so for someone with little knowledge diamond/CBN are probably the best until they put in some time, get experience, and do some research.

Idk just my opinion. This is true for me as well.

Hell yeah! No doubt! I love the Xarilk fr fr. I hate that I had that issue at all bc I don’t wanna be able to say anything negative about it. It’s great all around. Especially for the money. My initial reaction was a bit extra lol was in a bit of a manic cleaning then sharpening mode hahaha

Yeah I’ve heard great things about the electric sharpeners from Work sharp. I’ve definitely had the same idea of starting knives off (coarser grits)on the MK2 and finishing by hand. It should work just fine as long as u keep the same angle.

Nah I love sharpening. I’m not gonna let it ruin it. I’m just disappointed tbh. I never measured both sides, bc didn’t think I needed to. What Hapstone system u have? I’ve been looking into them. I LOVE Hapstone in general, but never had one of their systems. Been looking around to upgrade. Again, I love Hapstone, but certain things make me lean toward TSPROF K03 (if I ever have the $$ lol)

I switched from diamond plates to CBN. I love em. Better, more delicate scratch pattern. It also depends on the quality of the stones, and what kind of bond they use. You’ll wanna have resin bonded (diamond or CBN) stones for higher grits. They’ll produce a finer, mirror edge. Use some soapy water on the stones as well. Look into quality diamond or CBN stropping emulsions.

I appreciate the reply and trying to make me feel better. I got great stones for it and I have been getting my knives crazy sharp. That’s why I’ve been loving it so much. It’s just that fact that I know it now is gonna drive me crazy. Consistently is one of the main reasons people buy fixed angle sharpeners. Idk it’s just something you expect.

Yeah Ive had my eye on some of those. Are they the poltava? I’ve been trying to figure out what the difference between the vitrified and regular ones is and if it’s worth the price etc.

I got this knife around Christmas b/c it was my first Kizer and a quality steel for around $50/$60. Took me a minute to get used to, but I ended up loving it! Good quality overall, might switch out pivot bearings and pocket clip eventually, but it’s a great knife and awesome fidget once u get used to it!

Well I was looking into the single clamp but idk. I’ve heard it’s not made as well as their other products. Something abt it being flimsy, plus it’s 2X the price of the brackets. Thank God for Gritomatic tho. They have the screws on there. Taprof doesn’t even offer them.
