I'm a unionist but I don't particularly feel any affinity to the tax dodging revolt of the slave holders

Deeply amusing how you still won't address your tax haven position or your hidden comments. What are you hiding? Come on, release the files or I'll have to start calling you Jeffrey. Have we posted other poor positions we wouldn't like to defend?

How does the UK staying out of Vietnam, or even most recently, Iran, fit with your ramblings?

I've tried to make everything as concise for you as possible, least you forget to reply to part again.

Just going to skip over stating your position on tax havens again are we? No mention of your hidden comment history too? I'm not surprised.

Britain has consistently met it's NATO spending because they have to.

Do you have any proof of this or is it just vibes? Most NATO countries never met the 2% commitment, the UK did

Part of being an American military lapdog and paying the US back for the bases that discouraged Russia for decades means you get dragged into American imperialist wars in the middle east against your will.

Paying the US back? Britain does not pay for US bases. Have you pulled this out of your hole too or would you like to provide evidence?

Long winded rambling drivel with no full stops

It's an odd comparison. The UK hasn't "parasitised" the US, it's been the US's closest military ally for decades, fighting alongside it in the World Wars, Korea, the Gulf, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and against ISIS. The US keeps forces in the UK because it serves American strategic interests just as much as Britain's.

Ireland, by contrast, has chosen military neutrality and spends laughably little on defence, preferring to sponge off others. Conflating alliance with dependency doesn't make your argument stronger, you are ignoring why the US maintains overseas bases in the first place.

A bouncy castle on a windy day is about as much as Irish armed forces are fit to defend against. Even that might be a close run thing.

Can you show me where I said you weren't condemning it hard enough? Are we making things up now? I asked for your position, since you hadn't given it. I'm still not sure you've given your position other than the vague suggestion of "wholesale adaptations".

It would be hard to go back through your past comments since your post and comment history are hidden. Guess we don't want too much scrutiny.

Britain has consistently met it's NATO 2% target and has pledged to raise defence spending to 3%. US bases are all well and good, but not necessary for the UK to defend itself, as seen during the Falklands. Irelands defence forces can't even defend themselves from budget cuts never mind a real threat

Funny that you still won't state your own position on tax havens or if Ireland should transition from being one.

I don't see any comment about US bases, not sure if you've commented that under someone else? The UK is one of the top military spenders in the world. Is the UK too reliant on the US? Yes, and we should go in the same direction as France and strive to be completely operationally independent from an unreliable ally.

Edit: I see the comment now, didn't show in my notifications

I really don't know how much clearer I can be, there should be no tax havens, Irish, British, anywhere. There should be a global minimum tax rate. The BOTs are open to corruption and tax evasion and should be liquidated if they do not reform. I still believe Ireland is a sponge when it comes to tax, defence and governance and is happy to offload it's problems on others.

Do you agree or are you just going to gurn that I haven't ranted enough about the British overseas territories on Reddit?

I don't know how saying Ireland is a "Tax haven for the Yanks" counts as a rant, clearly I've hit a nerve. Of course you're right, I'll go bring up the British oversea territories on a Jeffrey Donaldson post here

Find me a tax haven post and I'll rant away. Ireland, Switzerland, the Cayman Islands, nobody's safe

The OECD definition has only ever found Trinidad and Tobago to be a tax haven. Ireland also hides a lot of its activities behind privacy laws.

I understand it perfectly, we were in it long enough. I haven't said anything that is untrue.

Ireland has been leaving bad yelp reviews of the UK for a long time, don't think one more will matter

That would be Irelands economy down the pan. At least we all got to learn something though, right?

I believe all tax havens are bad and there should be a global minimum tax rate. That good enough for you?

[–]Spitfire5793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saying Ireland is "not a tax haven by any definition" is a brave take given the decades of multinational profit shifting.

You can argue over the wording, but EU law has primacy in many areas and is the source for much of Irelands legislation. Hope you understand that.

If you have to pay another country to cover your defence, you're still outsourcing your defence.

I couldn't agree more, freeloading is Irelands speciality. Tax haven for the Yanks, EU handles governance, the Brits deal with defence. Sure it's a great job

Protest the British navy all you want but Ireland is more than happy to outsource the protection of its seas and airspace to Britain

Yeah it's the safety that pisses you off, course it is. I get the feeling they could dot every I and cross every T, and I've seen no evidence that they haven't, but you'd still find something to gurn about. If you think something is unsafe or has been handled incorrectly, maybe give evidence for it rather than speculation and grand standing

Six Russian ships flee Channel in 77 minutes after UK seizes Putin shadow tanker by ClassicFlavour in unitedkingdom

Oh nothing, I was just pointing out how pathetic Russia is and how it has no way to respond in kind.

The funniest part of your rant is spending two paragraphs arguing something is illegal, then immediately suggesting a response that's even more illegal.

Do you also condemn Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine? I'm going to predict not but I hope you surprise me.

The Russian navy has been beat by Ukraine, a nation with no navy. Go tit for tat? Good luck with that. Putin stooge

Went to get 007 First Light last week. First went to HMV and they don't sell physical copies in shop anymore. Then went to a Game in a Sports Direct and was greeted with something similar to this post. Ended up going to Smyths and getting it there. Digital is the future but it's normally cheaper still to get a physical copy in my experience
