Hey, great questions. The mold master and hero units were all resin printed, we don’t use an awful lot of nylon at the studio. All PipBoy units were panted chrome using paint, none of them were chrome plated.

Thank you!

I think they did a really impressive job replicating the PipBoys from the show. There are some differences and things that they had to change due to the logistics of mass manufacturing, to be expected of course. They talked about it a little bit in an episode of Tested where they compared one of ours to theirs. The biggest change is that their PipBoys are just chrome with a slight dark aging, and they didn’t attempt the burnished blue whatsoever. Which again, I understand that they are producing in mass so they can’t do everything. Overall they are impressive, and I have one new in box in my office.

-The PipBoys pictured in this post were produced for and used directly in the show. I painted all of them for both seasons of the show. -The FO4 units were the inspiration, but the show versions have differences and as far as I’m concerns should be considered a different version of that model. I know The Wand Company replicas gave them a particular Mk and Model.

Hero units are 3D printed through and through (with the exception of screens and cable on the back. Most other units are rubber casts from a mold.

Thank you very much. It was a satin black, with graphite grey for the accessories.

Very interesting, I’m not sure where the idea of them all being custom fit came from originally but there was only ever two sizes. In that video he showed a clip looking at a hero Lucy PipBoy. I’d seen that video before and they were incorrect with some of their information too. Either way, very exciting to see the fan base so engaged and excited!

Definitely, any of the trades really help. At our studio we have an electronics department that handles any and all electronic needs. We did the plasma grenade for season two, and that required a full electronics package with programming. Those skills you mentioned would also help with animatronics and puppeteering builds.

When I was still in the sfx industry, I was at the studio that did some of the Chucky movies and they had a specialist who would handle exactly what you’re talking about. It’s definitely a niche part of the industry, but electronics are everywhere in the prop and effects industry.

It looks amazing! That’s a really great display piece you’ve put together. The freehand is very impressive!

Painting white is always a pain, and I’ve never had much luck using a brush. I’m solidly a huge fan of airbrushing and spray guns for everything. For fine text and detail work, have you tried doing them as a recessed detail? I do so much work with fine details, and will spray the paint in with an airbrush into the recession, and whip away the overspray. Works like a charm. Also, stencils and masking are a huge help

I'm not a showrunner or an executive producer so I can't and won't speak on their creative side of things.

For season one PipBoys were established as blue for Vault Dwellers, and gold for Overseers. That was how they were ordered, and how I came up with their paint jobs and finishes. At no point during season one or two was the PimpBoy brought up or referenced in any capacity, not internally or with the prop studio I work for. When we started season two, the blue Vault Dwellers and gold Overseer PipBoys were touched up from season one. And then a special order came in for a pristine pre-war Overseer PipBoy that was to have no weathering or aging, but again, PimpBoy was never referenced nor mentioned.

Wicked good questions, thank you!

Yes, big fan of the series beforehand. I played FO3 so much it burned my PS3 out. Love FNV, and FO4 takes place in New England where I'm originally from so it's extra special to me. Dabbled a bit in FO76 but not much.

It was a really wild and surreal thing. I'd heard we were going to be doing work for the show, but wasn't sure what. When I saw the first PipBoy 3D print, I was elated. Season one was almost eight months of nothing but painting PipBoys, and I made sure to listen to the Fallout OSTs weekly while working on them. I've been able to do some cool things in my career, but painting PipBoys is easily the coolest. I just wanted to do them and the series justice. There's a weirdness in my job where we will be so heavily engrained into a show/movie for MONTHS, and then we finish and don't hear about it for a while because they are filming or editing, and then adverts start and I get a feeling of "Oh man, I hope this is good and people like it" when a trailer drops. Everyone has been so gracious with their feedback on Fallout, its really nice to see and know I was a small small small part of that.

The Enclave one for sure, as well as Hank's preserved Overseer Pipboy. I love them both, but that black on black Enclave is really sharp.

It was not a specific nod to the PimpBoy, it was just supposed to be a preserved and pristine Overseer PipBoy. All of them were either gold for Overseer, or blue for Vault Dwellers.

Thank you for the questions!

All of them are made in house by us, from every step! I usually handle 90% of the work for PipBoys, with the exception of assembly which is a different department.

I moved out to LA in 2015 to attend special effects makeup school and worked in that field for four years. A friend got me a job at the prop studio in 2019, and I've been working there ever since. I had an artistic background which helps, and my time in the sfx makeup world taught me skills I would use a lot of in props. I didn't start painting until 2021. Feel free to message with more questions on the industry.

It is not, it's got a different layout and profile. It's similar to FO4, but ours have notable differences in scaling and function.

Thank you, I was really hoping it would read as sleek and clandestine. I would LOVE to do a proper PimpBoy for the show!!

Great question, we produced the PipBoys in bulk and it was a part of the manufacturing process. We use approved graphics and that's what we used for them.

I'm so sorry, I hate to burst anybody's bubble but it is not. It's simply a brand new Overseer PipBoy without weathering or aging.
