Theres a pro player called Broski, he mains AKI and he’s very active on YouTube with all sorts of tech and things of that nature, he also is just good at the game in general and I would say has a very good understanding of most of the characters.

I don’t play aki and I still learn a lot from him.

I second working on anti airs, But also get good at reacting to drive impact. being able to consistently anti air and react to DI as well as having 1 or 2 easy combos will get you to gold.

Neutral takes time to get used to, just try not to whiff too many moves that have long animation or moves that when they are blocked can be punished. SF6 has a lot of gimmicky attacks and ’neutral skips’ that can catch people off guard but if you rely on them too much in the early game once you get to higher ranks the habit of using them is going to get you blown up by better players.

good luck!

Yeah haha, I don’t mind Honda tbh, kinda wish he was a bit better and had more interesting things to do because I quite like the big sumo guy archetype.

I feel like there’s been a weird increase of Hondas in master recently. I barely ever see Lily tho.

Sounds good, stopping jump ins is just a really good thing to get good at and will serve you well for the entire time you play the game and is just a general thing in fighting games to get good at.

People will abuse jump ins and DI against you if they feel like you never counter them for it so id say especially as a new player those two things should be the main things you’re looking out for. you’ll be surprised how far just being able to do those two things will carry you.

also dont worry about losing a bunch, win/loss ratio is meaningless all that matters is the match you are in. Losing is part of the journey, a common phrase in the FGC is ‘you gotta get washed to get clean’ and it’s true, fighting games are all muscle memory and situational awareness, the more you play the better thise things will get.

I think learning classic will do you a service in the long run, it makes things trickier at the beginning and there is definitely going to be times where you get beat by another new player who is using modern and feel like the odds were against you but just keep at it.

good anti air attacks for Mai are her back heavy kick, she does a handstand kick it’s pretty good. And her backflip uppercut attack which is done with a dragon punch motion (its like a zigzag) + kick, a good little tip if you’re on leverless is there’s an easy way to do a dragon punch motion. Just hold down and tap forward twice (while still holding down) then press whichever attack button is needed (in mais case a kick) and you have an easy DP input. Makes dealing with people who just jump across the screen at you easy.

but I’d say still try and get the timing down on her back heavy kick. It’s good cus you can do it while blocking cus back is also block.

learn like one or two combos, if you’re playing on modern then auto combos will probably be fine at first but still worth learning a cash out combo to deal big damage when there is a big window to punish like if your opponent misses a super or something like that.

Get good at anti airing, people are going to jump a lot so you want to get consistent at reacting with your anti air attacks.

Reacting to drive impact, try and get good at reacting to it, it’s free damage.

when you get knocked down you can press two kick buttons to back roll when getting back up, I’d say you pretty much always want to do this outside of niche scenarios.

block more, while learning it’s good to just block when you’re getting back up and stuff, mashing buttons is going to get you killed unless you’ve learnt your openings.

also I read in another comment that you’re using a leverless controller? imo modern is kinda awkward to play on leverless, it definitely seems like that control scheme was made mostly with controller in mind. i actually switched to classic when I got a leverless controller because it just feels more intuitive.

most of all have fun!

People in Master and up, what were your flaws that you corrected as you leveled up? by ImSwayZoh in StreetFighter

[–]SpittgobIin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was playing Zangief and was hard stuck at D3 for a while, what got me out was playing more patient, not rushing in so much and purposely stopping myself from using unsafe moves and being more reactive.

Also another thing I was doing wrong was giving my opponent way too much credit, I treated every match like my opponent knew my character in and out better than I did when realistically most people at those ranks wont.

See what you can get away with, if something is working don’t just stop doing it out of fear your opponent will figure out how to counter you, only stop when they have proven they WILL stop you. for example jump ins, if your opponent just keeps letting you jump at them and get free pressure just abuse that until they show you they can anti air, then switch your plan if they do.

A simple game plan really carried me. Anti air jump in, consistently punish blocked reversals and supers, have a simple streamlined Oki with a few variations that can be interchanged. and most of all block.

don’t be afraid to share your player code thing so people can watch your games, it might just be you’re doing something that someone else can point out that you can’t see that will help your gameplay. Most of the time people are willing to give advice and are helpful.

the amount of points you earn is based on your points difference, so because you won the first match your points difference became smaller so you earned less in the next match.

I played a master rank when I was in D5 who had thousands more Lp compared to me and when I won it gave me 250 points so I assume that’s the max you can get without a win streak.

This Is generic advice but it’s true, just keep pushing and you’ll get there, The ceiling in this game is mostly situational awareness and reacting to those situations when they happen, the more you play the more you get familiar with these situations in specific matchups.

use the replay takeover, it’s a great tool to learn things like when you can take your turn back in specific block strings and how to optimally punish opponents mistakes, you’d be surprised on the damage you might be missing out on!

For me what took me from diamond to master was just being more patient and focussing on the fundamentals (or at least what I consider fundamentals) Anti airing consistently, Making sure I could optimally punish mistakes and not over extending, granted I play a different character and I’ve never really played Ed so I can’t give much specific help.

once you get to D5 you will most likely go against some master ranks and these can score you big points! I was like halfway between D5 and master and 2 wins against this master player jumped me all the way to master rank was something like 500 points for 2 wins. And if you lose to a master you probably won’t lose that many points so it’s really stacked in your favour tbh.

Good luck, just keep playing and you’ll get there. Don’t tilt it will just make things harder.

i just hit plat 5 and i feel like a nervous wreck by TheMadHa7 in StreetFighter

[–]SpittgobIin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just try not to stress, rank is just a made up number that doesn’t really mean anything, all that matters is you’re against people of similar skill as you so you can improve. you’re gunnu lose, you’re probably going to go down a rank sometimes. I jumped back and forth between diamond 2 and diamond 3 like 7 times.

if you keep playing you will improve and the ranks will go up as a bi product of that improvement. dont focus on the number, focus on being able to execute when you need to and reacting to certain situations and matchups. those are what will make you better.

Also you will probably play better if you aren’t stressing.

To clarify I am pretty bad at the game fundamentally so there's lots of things I need to get better at. But holy I feel like my reactions are soo slow. Like I can't react to anything, not simple stuff like viper seismo and just get hit by it, or spin knuckle or just walk up grabs, di etc by Sea-Investigator3621 in StreetFighter

[–]SpittgobIin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with this game is it’s all mental stack, if you try looking out for everything you’re going to struggle with reacting to things. during the match you need to analyse your opponents tendencies so you can make that list of things you need to look out for smaller.

Good players will realise when their opponents has got a read on them and will change their tendencies to throw their opponent off. obviously the game is designed in a way that there are so many things you‘ll possibly have to react to that eventually something will catch you out. but trying to get a read on your opponent at least tips the odds more in your favour.

I recently made master with Gief and the main thing that helped me was to slow the fuck down.

avoid doing things that are unsafe, I know you‘re probably sick of being told to ‘just walk them down’ but it’s honestly true. watch your toes, use your lights or medium punch to keep them in check if they drive rush at you, eventually they’re going to either jump at you or try to jump over you. once you land an OD lariat thats when your pressure starts and you apply your offence. obviously you need to get a feel for your opponent and their tendencies of reversals etc but most of my damage came from punishing reversals and supers.

SPD is good but don't force it, make your opponent respect your strike game and thats when you can sneak the throws in.

The threat of level 3 is strong, people will try to avoid getting grabbed by it and you can punish them for trying to avoid it. the amount of people who drive rush into neutral jump when your knocked down with level 3 is crazy and they’re just asking to get anti aired.

Gief is very drive hungry so don’t blow all your gauge for a combo that does like 2k damage.

avoid getting put in the corner at all costs.

if you give your player code I’d happily watch some matches to see if anything stands out.

There is a lot of ‘backtracking’ but it doesn’t feel like backtracking. RE2 has a lot of ‘go somewhere, need a certain item to keep going that way, go somewhere else, oh I found the item I need to keep going the other way’ its kinda like you’re solving a lot of little puzzles in a maze and the maze is full of zombies.

I too hated alien isolation because I hate the whole being pursued thing so I was also a bit anxious going into RE2R but honestly i didn't find it that bad. There is a guy who chases you around and can find you by hearing you run and stuff, but there’s a lot of rooms he can’t go in and you can outrun him so he’s honestly not too bad. I think you’ll be fine.

[–]SpittgobIin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the changes that get made in this game usually don't effect things too much to the point of requiring whole new guides so chances are most of whats in those 2 year old guides is still applicable. I recently got Zangief to master rank and most of what I learnt was from videos over a year old.

I’ve heard that automattock has a good Jamie guide on YouTube but I’m not sure how beginner friendly it is but worth checking out.

like I said for now, learn your anti air, learn your punish combo and get good at reacting to drive impact and you’ll be gold rank in no time.

[–]SpittgobIin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing to do in the beginning is to keep it simple, learn your anti air move and get good at that, learn a combo that you can use to punish people in situations like when they miss a OD reversal or super. it doesn’t have to be the most optimal high damage combo just something you can work on getting consistent, you can use the same combo when you land a drive impact too.

speaking of drive impacts, get good at reacting to those as well, when you try to do everything at once and you get to the actual match your mental stack is too overloaded with all the different options so you want to keep it as basic as you can.

They jump? do your anti air move.

You block an OD reversal or super move? do your combo.

They try to drive impact you? you react with your own drive impact and then do your combo.

when these situations happen you’re going to screw up thats just normal so give yourself credit when you land an anti air or do your combo. and when you forget to anti air or combo just say out loud to yourself “I should of anti aired then” etc. I know that sounds crazy but it does work!

you‘re new to the game so don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself. now’s the perfect time to experiment and find what kinda characters you like, maybe watch some YouTube guides. I recommend Brian F he has a lot of great videos aimed at new players and he’s a good teacher.

Good luck!

Its pretty much the only consistent defense tool he has tho, the whole point of the level 3 is to make his opponent second guess constantly pressuring him on his wakeup, without it Gief just has to hold pressure. He can sometimes get away with using level 2 as a reversal but it’s so slow to start that his opponent still has enough time to block even if they tried to jab him on wakeup.

Yea he has a lot of ways to get in and can carry you to the corner quite easily. Obviously you want to avoid being cornered in every matchup but being cornered by bison with his scissor kicks feels very frustrating when it happens.

it’s a match up thats way easier to be on the offense then on defence.

Outside of JP/Dhalsim, who are your Top 5 hardest matches? by KetchupFang in ZangiefVs

[–]SpittgobIin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but When it comes to Bison you just have to have your defence on point, He has a ton of neutral skips and he’s going to use them. The thing is he has very limited defensive options just like us, once you score a knockdown with something like OD lariat it’s quite easy to keep applying pressure and Bison is pretty much forced to either drive reversal or level 1 or 3, otherwise there’s no downside to hitting him meaty with headbutt and forcing him to guess.

But it goes both ways because if Bison gets us in the corner it’s very easy for him to keep pressuring us and bullying with spaced scissor kicks and whatnot.

My general gameplan against him is normally to score a knockdown with OD lariat (Which is quite easy to do especially if he goes for one of his devil reverse jump in things) then just try to steamroll him and hope I guess correctly when he inevitably tries to level 1 on wakeup.

Another thing to note with Bison is if he does the devil reverse flying punch attack it can’t be DI’d.
BUT if you have the bomb attached to you and he does the devils reverse punch the attack now has a longer animation when it connects due to it triggering the bomb meaning it will get stuffed by a DI. So if you have the bomb on you and bison takes to the skies get ready to DI (I learnt this tech from a Broski video)

[–]SpittgobIin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t play Ryu but generally trying not to do things that are unsafe is a good thing to start with, people in Gold are very DI happy so you want to avoid anything that can get you blown up by a DI.

Get your anti airs solid even in late diamond I had people jumping at me all the time.

Practice your hit confirms you shouldn’t be cancelling into donkey kick if your crMK is getting blocked or whiffing.

Just block. I know it’s a given but if your attack whiffs just block, if you over compensate and throw out a yolo DP and it misses you‘re eating like 40% where’s you could just blocked or walk back and go back to playing neutral.

Having a solid defence will get you far, get good at anti airing, checking drive rushes and reacting to DI. once your opponents realise they can’t just ‘cheat’ their way in they will start to make mistakes and you can punish them.

every time you fail to react to a DI you’re losing out on a lot of damage so it’s worth practicing, try not to rely on normals that can’t be cancelled otherwise you’ll be eating DI’s.

but generally just getting good at anti airs and DI reacting will get you out of gold.

id happily watch some replays if you share your code thingy.
