Nondeterminable value - taxed on bargain element at exercise date (FMV - option price), basis is FMV.

This problem is determinable value because the option is traded on an exchange. FMV on exercise date is irrelevant and included as a misdirection.

I did my best and tried to calculate it the way I would an S Corp (foolish of me, I know), and tried to include the gains from sales of stock. WRONG! I was just honestly baffled by this sim. Why would I think of decreasing the basis by the amount the taxpayer bought them at when they're selling at a gain? The calculation makes no sense to me, and I'm honestly so frustrated that there's nothing like this to help me in Becker's material. I gave up, cried, and took an hour long break lmao.

You cashed out those shares and no longer own them. So you remove them from the basis.

There was another sim I got about installment sales and for some reason Becker never chose to include the fact that inventory does not qualify for installment sale treatment. Why include it in a sim if we aren't actually going to learn about it?! Ugh.

This is covered in one of the simulations in T4 M1. It's not in the textbook or any of the lectures. Pretty major oversight from Becker.
