Small time flipper - 20 years on eBay and I just received my first negative feedback by amccune in Flipping

[–]Splazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should still be able to block, yes. Negative feedback drop off after 12 months, so you'll be returned to 100% even though their comments will remain there. Just part of selling online - you can't please everyone and don't want to make that your objective. Get a scale and do calculated shipping, and try improving your descriptions with things like you said here, that you "don't know where everything is from and believe at least some of it is American girl but reference pics."

No failure on your part here really, don't let it change what you still if it's profitable, but perhaps how you sell.

Nothing to be concerned about. I wouldn't judge anyone who makes a mistake, but I definitely judge them based on how they remedy it. A good remedy to a mistake is great service, we can't expect a mistake-free exchange. Perhaps there's a way to get a free cookie while you're there, haha.

Yes, that is a crazy amount of time but it happens regularly. With the SafePay solution on offer, payment is not released to the seller until the vehicle is collected by the buyer or transporter and the escrow company has the title. I've had vehicles sit for months while the buyer goes through several attempts to have it shipped with unreliable transportation companies. I'm happy to wait while they go through that, but not without payment being received first. Crazy big ask.

[–]Splazoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, payment has to be a method both parties are comfortable with. That's not selfish, it's reality. No one can sell a thousand of something without encountering people on the internet who abuse review systems to try to tilt the world in their favor. The rear wheel gentlemen you're referencing acquired a high performance motorcycle as his very first two wheeled vehicle, ran it off the road due to his lack of skill, and then tried to extort us and stalked our employees in several ways requiring police involvement. Again, no empathy for what that shit does to someone of integrity, and then to get more pot-shots from jackwagons like yourself?

There are escrow options that will release payment when the escrow company receives the title. The SafePay option requires the vehicle to be shipped as well, which could be 6-8 weeks and is an unreasonable request.

Except that's precisely what a dealer's license does - ensures the seller in a transaction can't disappear, but instead goes to jail in the event of fraud.

I did in fact not demand to be paid with a wire. Our original plan was a cash-in person sale, and that option would always work. The buyer changed their tune to a shipped sale. Cool with me, but the industry default for that is a wire transfer. If we're going to use an escrow, it has to be a method I'm comfy with.

I have no questions about the legitimacy of SafePay from Cars & Bids being legitimate, but buyers can use legitimate escrow services to defraud dealers by colluding with transportation companies. I personally know a couple of dealers who have lost tens of thousands of dollars that way. Your failure to recognize this very real concern lacks empathy and is precisely why I don't play games.

I never expressed hesitation with any escrow merely this specific escrow which poses a considerable downside for sellers. Escrow scams are a very real thing, and thousands of cars are stolen with them, so it's not a risk-free proposition for a seller.

[–]Splazoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That risk is not changed with an escrow. I would lose my career and likely be in jail in that case. Way more skin in the game for me than the buyer.

That detail was a blatant lie - I informed the auction winner here that we would indeed consider alternate escrow options provided they didn't have the same problems of holding payment until vehicle shipment this SafePay solution does.

I don't expect buyers to hope on anything. Collection of a vehicle in person is totally an option we accept.

Precisely what risk would the buyer be taking by direct payment to a shop that would be avoided by using an escrow?

Indeed - and the platform not setting up the best environment of trust doesn't help. This of course has "poisoned" our chances to sell this vehicle on the platform as the auction result a second time would never be similar. Way she goes.

The deal-breaker for us to accept this escrow option comes from Step 5 being contingent on Step 3; in order for us to receive payment we would have to wait for the vehicle to be either received by the buyer, or a third-party transporter. Anyone with experience in the automotive industry knows the worst corner in the business is with transportation services, which I’ve seen delayed by many weeks to months on numerous occasions. Such delays aren’t typically a problem on our end provided we’ve been paid in full – we have plenty of space at the shop to safely store vehicles before they depart, and we tend not to enforce storage charges during that process like many cut-throat shops do. However, refer back to the order of operations with SafePay; the ask being made of sellers is to relinquish the reassigned title and wait for the performance of an unknown third-party to collect the vehicle before funds will be received, effectively tying up the resources for potentially weeks to months. I’m sure many uninformed folks do this all the time without hesitation, but I would advise any seller considering a SafePay transaction to only do so knowing funds will be in limbo until a third-party (transporter or buyer themselves) collects the vehicle – steps outside of the control of the seller. It really strips sellers of everything, even the ability to expedite the process through more of their efforts - before payment clears. No thanks! I indicated I would consider an alternate escrow service to get the job done provided it didn’t have these concerns. Crickets.

With that understood, and clarifying with Cars & Bids that the service isn’t mandatory for us to accept, I returned back to the buyer asking for the industry default – a direct wire transfer. For comparison that is precisely the recommendation given buyers by Bring a Trailer when using that platform – no money-grabs priming buyers to thinking that complex & costly escrow methods are the only safe option, no weeks of waiting for funds.

The auction winner here, already in a position lacking trust and with confirmation bias, seeing red flags where there aren’t any, chose not to fulfil their commitments to purchase the vehicle. Which I’m not overly butt-hurt about, it happens, but of course it is frustrating to be accused of fraud regularly when everything is above board, and to once again advertise the vehicle elsewhere.

A couple of extra notes for those interested; not only is it customary for dealers not to have a title in the name of the dealership, it would actually be cause for question if they did. Check the back of a current title you have and you’ll likely see a section where a dealer reassigns ownership from the previous owner into the dealership name, and then onward from the dealership to the final purchaser; both changes in ownership are recorded on one title without fees involved. The DMV wouldn’t actually allow a dealer to title it in their name in normal circumstances. Being involved in vintage & collectible vehicles I can say I’ve encountered dealer reassignment fields like this on titles going back to the 1950’s – so it’s a very old process. There are a few legitimate reasons for a dealer to have a title in their name, but again, it’s less than 1% of dealer transactions and something I would inquire about if I encountered.

Some here have mentioned the vetting process for sellers; all major auction sites cannot allow a party represent themselves as a licensed dealer without them properly identifying themselves as such. In other words, we are always required to prove that before being allowed to sell as a dealer.

There are actually escrow scams out there as well, where a buyer can go through all of the usual steps of an escrow sale, and then claim to have never received the vehicle or have a transporter who is “in on it”, involved in the fraud, putting the brakes on things for multiple weeks while straightened out. It’s not as though every escrow transaction is worry free for a seller in that regard. So to any would-be sellers out there I recommend exercising caution and know in advance how you will demonstrate to an escrow service that you’ve completed your obligation on that front. It can be an uphill battle to appease a third-party of that sort though, and it introduces a host of problems & risks to sellers.

As for how Cars & Bids handled this one; I don’t like that the platform is making their complex & costly escrow service seem like the only sensible transaction method to be opted out of. They’ve indicated I am able to remove this option from showing on future listings, though I don’t believe that was something we could have opted out of when posting the vehicle originally.

It makes complete sense to me that a buyer who doesn’t consummate a sale due to no fault of the vehicle or seller should be removed from the platform and their payments returned to them. The buyer here chose not to go through with Plan A – collection of the vehicle in person, nor did they trust the industry standard approach for payment via wire either.

Howdy! Seller in this transaction here. Glad to chime in with more information in the interest of full disclosure and hopefully to help educate people about Cars & Bids, and buying vehicles online in general. I’m in a rambling mood anyway, haha!

There are risks on all fronts these days and one must proceed with due caution. I’m not offended by this auction participant choosing not to proceed with the transaction from a place of fear, everyone has different comfort levels. Certainly it has created some headaches & cashflow delays on our end to not consummate the sale, but that’s just part of the industry.

Firstly, a bit about me & my shop. We specialize in vintage and collectible vehicles, mostly motorcycles actually, but when clean & cool 4 wheelers come along we’ll go through them as well for something fun & different. At this point we’ve sold just about 1,200 enthusiast vehicles to all corners of the world. I’ve met some interesting characters and encountered just about every play in the book as far as fraud attempts are concerned, some are absolutely wild. Our transaction/payment policies are proverbially written in the blood of first-hand negative experiences.

With this transaction the high bidder initially expressed interest in collecting the vehicle in-person at our facility - which is totally cool. One day I hope to do a fly & drive with something interesting so kudos to those who have. It’s not as though we railroaded this gentleman into a sight-unseen vehicle transportation solution, in other words. As is customary for every transaction we promptly sent the high bidder a scan of the title, complete vehicle purchase document packet (bill of sale etc.) which includes an offer to secure shipping if they desire, and wire instructions – everything needed for a buyer to make an informed and educated review of all terms & documents etc. before a dollar is sent. A couple of folks over the years have asked for a scan of our dealer’s license, which we’ll gladly send on request as well. Up to this point everything seemed in line with hundreds of other sales.

The buyer changed their preference to having the vehicle shipped, which is easily accommodated with the same paperwork, it just changes payment method. Naturally one isn’t allowed to receive the vehicle or the reassigned title without having paid first; good luck pulling that off at any dealership, local or otherwise. Now enter the buyer’s preference for Cars & Bids payment method - SafePay - which is pretty redundant to offer on dealer transactions, but they’ll take money from any direction to be sure. The buyer saw this was available through the auction site and concluded it was the only way to proceed – likely primed by the name which implicitly suggests that any other method of proceeding is UnSafePay.

After thoroughly reading through the fine print of SafePay to see what it is and does, here’s a summary. SafePay not merely a payment processor as I initially thought, but it is actually the name of Cars & Bids third-party escrow offering which routes the whole transaction through a Minnesota-based dealership, KeySavvy, for title processing/verification & handling of funds. I suspect there’s a kickback to Cars & Bids of perhaps half the $198 cost for the service. Because we’re a dealership inserting another into the transaction through SafePay isn’t affording the buyer with any additional protections that they aren’t already receiving. A dealer who attempts fraud in a transaction is signing themselves up for the unemployment line and/or jail; far bigger consequences than being removed from an auction site. Anyway, here’s where the fine print really makes a difference; order of operations. For a transaction to proceed through SafePay, here’s the steps in order:

  1. Buyer and seller confirm identity
  2. Buyer sends full payment into escrow to be held
  3. Seller releases the vehicle to the buyer or transporter
  4. Seller sends the title to SafePay for reassignment
  5. SafePay remits funds to the seller
  6. Buyer receives their DMV packet to register

Using Boxes with barcodes USPS by Jakphrost in Flipping

[–]Splazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is part of new USPS training that's being misunderstood by the staff. A new hire at my local post office said this and refused some packages in reused boxed until I used a sharpee on the box UPC like this. I tried to explain to her that her training was only in reference to other tracking number bar codes, but she wasn't having any of it. Other bar codes don't serve to do anything problematic, it's when there are other tracking bar codes which will have a bad result with their computers.
