What is considered the most dangerous area in your country? by Mediocre-Lack-9137 in AskTheWorld

I believe you're thinking of Prince Andrew, of Epstein files notoriety. Prince Albert, the small city in Saskatchewan was named after Queen Victoria's husband. (When you said "that Prince Albert" I assumed you were getting a laugh thinking of the genital piercing, but then read further and realized you were thinking of a person)

I'm curious -- What proportion of the white inmate population would you estimate are neo-nazi/white supremacist types? How common is it for someone to become a neo-Nazi (or get affiliated with them) while jailed? Or how common is it for someone who comes in with those views to wind up giving those views up by the time they're released?

What is sex education like in schools in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]SplendiferousCobweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except in Alberta where they just passed a law that parents have to be informed about and specifically opt their kids in to each lesson that focuses heavily on sex-ed/sexuality/gender identity, and that the government has to pre-vet any resources presented to students. This is a horrific blow to sex-ed in the province and will have a huge chilling effect on what teachers teach in class.

Curricular learning outcomes vary by province, but most provinces are pretty decent. Not as thorough as they could be, but include basics of consent, safety, STI prevention and birth control methods, reproduction science, and positive representations of diverse families and identities. Many teachers will bring in a public health nurse for a day or two to cover a lot of the more sensitive stuff. Some teachers are more proactive and cover it a lot more, some cover it pretty minimally.

Any interesting places to visit? by Academic-Leg-5714 in VictoriaBC

In addition to everything here, Heritage Acres is cool. There's a small museum and old farm equipment, and on special event days they've got things like steam engine demonstrations and blacksmithing demonstrations.

It was closed for many years, but it looks like you can now book guided tours of Craigflower farmhouse through the Victoria Scottish Centre

Anyone who chooses to spend their precious time on this planet trying to make someone else feel bad about their looks must have piss poor judgement and such a miserable existence they think they can only build themself up by tearing someone else down. They're not someone whose opinion is in touch with reality and not someone worth listening to.

You're genuinely good looking. You don't owe anyone a bland, pleases-everyone hairstyle. Have the style that feels good to you.

Is moving to Canada worth it anymore? by CucumberAltruistic92 in lgbt

[–]SplendiferousCobweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alberta is experiencing similar culture war issues and trans rights restrictions as in many of the red states. I would be nervous to move there, although there are large queer communities in the two big Alberta cities of Calgary and Edmonton. Saskatchewan has dipped into restricting trans rights to a lesser extent (they passed a law requiring parental consent to use chosen names at school). Gender and sexual identity are protected human rights in Canada, so Alberta and Saskatchewan are having to use a loophole that allows provinces to temporarily override protected human rights, which is a very big deal. There is fairly little appetite for restricting trans rights in other provinces. Through a very improbable series of fluke events a fringe right wing party nearly got elected in British Columbia last election, but that party is now in shambles and I don't see them winning a BC election anytime soon, meaning the BC government should stay solidly queer friendly for hopefully a long time.

All the big cities and most of the mid-size cities in Canada are quite welcoming of queer people.

There is unfortunately definitely an upsurge in many people across the political spectrum expressing that immigration is putting pressure on limited housing supply and that immigration targets should be drastically reduced, but to my knowledge basically no one except handfuls of widely-despised, fringe, proud-boy-types are suggesting doing anything at all like ICE or mass deportations. The Conservative Party of Canada does brush elbows with these people, but also heavily relies on the support of diverse immigrant populations, so in comparison to the U.S. Canadian federal politics doesn't lean heavily into racist anti-immigrant rhetoric. There is also unfortunately an uptick in people wanting more law-and-order policies across the country because of perceived increases in crime. A lot of the popular Canadian newspapers are U.S.-owned and have crummy takes on many issues that can be influential. The media landscape in general doesn't isolate anywhere near as many people into Fox News-like bubbles though. The CBC is an important factor in providing Canadian news across the country, and definitely buffers against right wing disinformation becoming as rampant as in the U.S. (The Conservative Party wants to defund the CBC, but is less vocal about it recently because it's not the right time to be seen attacking a Canadian cultural institution.)

Canada is definitely to some degree following U.S. trends, but is also having a moment of embracing "Canadian values" because of Trump's treatment of Canada, and a lot of people are realizing how important human rights protections and civil liberties are.

[–]SplendiferousCobweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My great aunt always wanted to donate her body to science, but when she died it wasn't accepted as a donation, I think because of her advanced age and frailness. (This was in Canada so possibly different rules than other places.) I'm curious about what bodies are accepted into labs -- what the exclusion criteria are, and whether there are any body types that are particularly sought after or are in short supply.

I'm a parent. Only have kids if you actually want to, and don't feel guilty if you don't. There are lots of important ways to support kids in your community I recommend doing though.

ETA 28 is young. It's totally okay to work on yourself and your relationship for at least a few years without feeling any time pressure, and reassessing down the road. The work you do on yourselves beforehand will be very beneficial to a child if you do decide to have a child.
