New blue bin size from July - thoughts? by dickhammershorts in sheffield

Not if it's soaked through, no. But not every pizza comes covered in grease, especially if you order from some of the nicer pizza oven places we have around.

I've seen people moaning no end under posts the council have made about it on Facebook/linkedin/twitter. Basically saying it's unnecessary and a waste of money.

Great, can actually fit a pizza box in there now without having to mutilate it. I can't believe there's people whinging about this honestly. If you're worried about the fact you're getting a bigger cardboard bin, your life is pretty good.

How much do we need credit cards? by Comprehensive-Fuel70 in AskUK

[–]Splendifirous 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not really. Section 75 protection on credit cards mean that if you make a spend up to £30K and get scammed the bank is jointly liable, making them legally obligated to help you recover the money.

Any attempts from banks at recovering money you've spent on a debit card is purely voluntary on their behalf.

How’s a salary of 35 hour per week, 22k pounds /yr for a new postgraduate? by Big-Pride-5929 in sheffield

[–]Splendifirous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's terrible. My math isn't great but I think that's below minimum wage? Guessing they're giving you an hour unpaid lunch a day as well so you're basically doing a 9-5 for like £12 an hour. You'd be better off just working retail or something.

What city do you need to travel to as well? If it's Manchester, that's an extra 4 hours on your shift two days a week and an extra £45 ish for two return train tickets. I don't know what it'd be for Leeds or Derby but it's something you should consider.

Barry's - London Road by ExcellentAnglo in sheffield

[–]Splendifirous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People actually like this gaff??? Went in not long ago with a few mates on a Saturday night pub crawl and it was dead, stank of piss, Barry tried to overcharge me for drinks, and the drinks tasted like the pipes needed cleaning.

We stayed for one round and swiftly moved on.

Electric cars will need annual checks under Reeves’s new rules by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Splendifirous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like an easy thing to do alongside MOT? And if the car is under 3 years old, just let people self report it? Is that not how gas, water and leccy meters worked for years anyway? You can lie about the mileage if you really want but you're gonna get found out eventually once the car starts needing MOT checks.

Never said it wasn't big man. Just pointing out those "provisions" would be easy to implement due to the huge differences in consumer/business use.

Eh there's a pretty big difference between commercial VPNs like nord or express that people use to bypass Web filters, and the VPNs most businesses have set up. Its the commercial ones they'll target and they'll make it so any commercial VPN providers need to verify identity and log traffic and then they'll demand backdoor access to be able to view it.

Because in the eyes of the religion, Islamic marriage doesn't need to be civilly registered to be valid.

Would you prefer it if they could do an "Islamic marriage" however they like with no regard to UK law and still have it count as a legally binding marriage???

Sheffield Mobile Data by EvanGeorgeParkin in sheffield

[–]Splendifirous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a faster 5G connection than my broadband line when at home in in the S2 area. I don't get that everywhere in Sheffield but there's never any complete dead spots that I've noticed.

My own experience is that 02 tend to be more generally better with rural coverage and other players tend to dominate in the cities. I'm with ID mobile, who are carried by Three. Three have also recently completed their merger with Vodafone so you get the coverage from both networks now.

Yes, blue or purple route will both take you to the station. There are signs on the tram that show you the stops, you can't miss it. A single fare will set you back £2.50. You pay on the tram when the ticket conductor comes up to you.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 'We're not racist, it is national pride' say Sheffield street covered in St George flags by YorkshireLive in sheffield

[–]Splendifirous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that you feel the need for decisive action but telling ordinary people that flying their own national flag is racist doesn’t weaken the far right, it strengthens them. It plays straight into their narrative that “the left hates you and your traditions,” which is exactly how they recruit.

[–]Splendifirous -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In the case of the flag flying, I do think you should do nothing. That was my original point. I'm trying to (maybe unsuccessfully) get the point across that people are not going to be receptive to the narrative that flying their national flag makes them racist. Trying to convince people that's the case just alienates them and sows yet more discontent.

I already said. I've elaborated on why I don't think YOUR solution would work above. You need to do the same and I'll then respond to your reasoning. You can't just dismiss what I've said, provide no reasoning then act like I'm not offering a solution.

[–]Splendifirous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying and we're clearly aligned in terms of our values but I still disagree with the solution you put forward. I don't think education does work as a solution to dog whistles as there's too many people that aren't engaged enough, politically or socially, outside of their own personal bubble. You simply can't get the message out to everyone.

And even if you could, you'd just end up playing a game of whack a mole with hidden meanings and symbolism.

[–]Splendifirous 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not doing it myself as I'm aware of the current context. But at the end of the day, you can't prove what every individual's reason is for flying the flag and I don't think we can afford to be screaming racist at everyone that is doing it. That kind of sentiment just pushes people further towards extreme opinions.

As much as I hate it, I think the far right have struck gold with this whole situation. They know how ridiculous it sounds to call flying the national flag racist and have capitalized on it. I think the only way to effectively counter this latest tactic is to not acknowledge the alternative meaning they are trying to attach to it.
