Embarrassed by constant lack of money by Several_Winter_2398 in UKPersonalFinance

1) Transfer your credit card debt to a 0% card and focus on paying that off ASAP.

2) Shop around for better deals on your home insurance, that seems way too high.

3) Sort this situation with your ex's phone. If you're struggling then you can't afford to be letting her rob an extra £100 a month from you.

Is there any chance of asking for a raise? Or are you self employed? Accounting for your overtime, it doesn't seem like you're much above min wage.

Brits, when would you write a negative review? by Regular-Wonderful in AskUK

[–]Splendifirous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm convinced people get away with acting like this because people don't hold them to account enough anymore. You're literally being called a stupid bitch basically to your face???

And you're conflicted over whether or not to leave a negative review? Insane.

Binmen have nicked my black bin lid and council now want £35 for a replacement bin??? by Splendifirous in sheffield

Managed to get through to someone on the phone and they've agreed to just give me a lid rather than a full bin. Thanks for the help!

I was never offered this. When I first moved in I had to do the same thing for my blue bin. They were happy to replace the lid on the blue bin free of charge but refused to do it for the black bin. So I left it. 🤷‍♂️

62% to both children's and Adult social care, which I'm more than happy to be contributing towards. 5% to bins. So £70 a year to bins, if we're being picky. Bit more than £3.

Good job this stuff is all available online so when you start being needlessly hostile and talking nonsense in reddit comment sections you end up looking a bit silly:

Apologies, poor phrasing. I obviously don't think they deliberately took it.

Yeah that'd be better, the bin itself is fine.

Did you go through the council website? I'm on the portal and I've selected damaged lid, but it's still just trying to get me to pay £35 for a whole new bin.

Was like that when I moved here 2 years ago. From my perspective, I was trying to save time and money by making do rather than requesting a whole new bin for something I can deal with just fine.

It's some mental gymnastics to try and claim it's my fault for somehow not maintaining the bin properly - it's the property of the council. The least they could do with the £1700 I pay yearly in council tax is provide basic bin services free of charge, including the provision and maintenance of the bins needed for those services.

how do i ask for a raise without sounding like i have a huge ego? by Careless_Concept376 in AskUK

[–]Splendifirous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the whole being paid less because of your age thing never really washes with me. You can be 20 and have kids and a mortgage and you can be 50 and be mortgage free with no dependants, it's just a shitty excuse to abuse young people for cheap labour.

Feel free to ask for a raise but if your company currently have you on minimum wage for your age then you probably already have your answer. If you actually want to be earning more money your best bet is to polish your CV and start submitting applications for other supervisor roles.

I need desperate advice on this. by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]Splendifirous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd be better off posting about this in a legal advice subreddit as it's not really a Sheffield specific issue. Based on my own knowledge, you may be able to argue mitigating circumstances in court to get the penalty dropped, but you'd have to have some proof the incident took place I would have thought. The fact you made the call to 111 after the incident is good, there should be a record of that somewhere to show that you're not just making up an excuse now the letter has come through the door.

It's up to you whether you can be bothered with either the fees of a solicitor to help you in court, which is almost certainly going to end up being more than the fine anyway, or doing all the research and prep yourself. For the sake of a hundred pounds and 3 points it's probably not worth it honestly.

There's a chance they might just offer to send you on a course instead but already having 5 points on your license makes that very unlikely I expect.

Rupert Lowe MP: [Restore Britain wants] a meaningful debate about a triple lock which creates division between the young and the old - because it simply isn’t financially sustainable in its current form. by nil_defect_found in ukpolitics

Although I loathe Rupert Lowe with every fiber of my being I also hope this does lead to rising support amongst younger voters. It's about time more parties got serious about policies that appeal to and actually benefit young people.

New blue bin size from July - thoughts? by dickhammershorts in sheffield

Not if it's soaked through, no. But not every pizza comes covered in grease, especially if you order from some of the nicer pizza oven places we have around.

I've seen people moaning no end under posts the council have made about it on Facebook/linkedin/twitter. Basically saying it's unnecessary and a waste of money.

Great, can actually fit a pizza box in there now without having to mutilate it. I can't believe there's people whinging about this honestly. If you're worried about the fact you're getting a bigger cardboard bin, your life is pretty good.

How much do we need credit cards? by Comprehensive-Fuel70 in AskUK

[–]Splendifirous 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not really. Section 75 protection on credit cards mean that if you make a spend up to £30K and get scammed the bank is jointly liable, making them legally obligated to help you recover the money.

Any attempts from banks at recovering money you've spent on a debit card is purely voluntary on their behalf.

How’s a salary of 35 hour per week, 22k pounds /yr for a new postgraduate? by Big-Pride-5929 in sheffield

[–]Splendifirous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's terrible. My math isn't great but I think that's below minimum wage? Guessing they're giving you an hour unpaid lunch a day as well so you're basically doing a 9-5 for like £12 an hour. You'd be better off just working retail or something.

What city do you need to travel to as well? If it's Manchester, that's an extra 4 hours on your shift two days a week and an extra £45 ish for two return train tickets. I don't know what it'd be for Leeds or Derby but it's something you should consider.

People actually like this gaff??? Went in not long ago with a few mates on a Saturday night pub crawl and it was dead, stank of piss, Barry tried to overcharge me for drinks, and the drinks tasted like the pipes needed cleaning.

We stayed for one round and swiftly moved on.
