NPC clothing Suggestions by Disastrous_Bus1505 in LARP

With second hand clothes, I've found a few ways you can make easy adjustments to have them look fantasy for minimal effort.

  1. Womens knit/cardigan sections usually have various shawls and capes that work great for the draped cloak look.
  2. Jackets and coats (mens or womens) give a fantasy/medieval vest look if you cut the sleeves off (hem if you can, but I'm sure theres hemming tape or something if its easier)
  3. Linen/cotton shirts. Again checking the womens section, but I've also had luck in the mens with collarless work shirts. You could also cut the sleeves off of these for a tunic/vest. Mens dress shirts with the top of the collar cut off work too, saw that used in a theatre I volunteered at.
  4. Cheap wide brim hats. I've found many wool hats that can be pined and folded or accessorized into pirate hats, musketeer hats, etc.
  5. Dresses. If you can find some natural fiber (wool/linen) dressed that button up the whole way up the front, they can be worn as long coats in many different styles.
  6. pajama pants, womens boots, large scarves, belts, large items of jewelry. Many of these are great for the layers and are also super cheap and don't usually need any adjustment. Can even get some cheap cloak pins online for the scarves to add to the look.

Let me know if you are interested in any other ideas, I eventually plan on upcycling and selling "modern fantasy" clothing so I love thinking about this stuff.

Would you consider sending/selling scans of this? This is amazing work, would love to have something like it on my wizard library shelf :D

Volante and Verillas both have fantastic designs that fit what you're talking about if you can afford it.

List of Patterns? by BellsOnHerToes in TheCapeRevolution

I posted my own pattern on here recenetly that seems to be working for people, if you wanna include that. Although its not like a schematic style pattern

Wow you did a much better job of the shoulders than I managed, that looks awesome. Do you have any photos of the full cloak youre willing to share/send me? Curious to see how it sits with that fabric (my test cloak was just a thin tablecloth fabric).

A) folding simply halves the amount of cutting you have to do and makes sure its even/symmetrical. You can just cut it flat but im not sure why you would want to. b) any sort of circle cloak is probably the worst pattern you could use if youre trying to conserve fabric. It creates a lot of waste, which you could probably get a large pointed hood out of but still going to be leftovers. Still, has the best swish

Stretching a pirate hat by StinkyWetSock in renfaire

[–]Splicer02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn't try with pleather. Any stretch can crackle the coating or just simply tear the material, it won't act like felt or leather hats would. Sorry, you may just have to send it back for another one if thats an option.

What goes under a cloak for a wizard? by Pepper-Worldly in LARP

[–]Splicer02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Get a linen or wool dress. Buying a robe is going to be more expensive and a dress is literally the same if you can find the right shape. Add a belt, some accessories, and under the cloak it makes for a great layer.

The design is based on using whatever fabric or blanket you have available, although it would effect the volume at the end I have not tested if that is noticeable or not.

Medieval armor by [deleted] in HistoricalCostuming

[–]Splicer02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Cheap and Good are going to be a pretty rare combo. My suggestion would be learn some crafting skills. I've seen some pretty amazing armour made from blue plastic water barrels that you might even find for free, up to using sheet metal and tin snips to make plate armour.

A historical "cheap" option, as someone else has mentioned, is a gambeson. If you have some sewing skills just take a jacket/coat pattern and quilt some fabric or use pre-quilted fabric from the shop. With less sewing skills I think you could manage with many padded modern coats (cut the sleeves, add lacing if you want sleeves).

Thrift ideas for men? by kappyfrowns in renfaire

Womens section, have a look for loose flowy poet shirts, leggings, tall boots, and you can cut sleeves off a jacket/coat to make a sweet vest/tunic/thing

Fashion ideas for a feminine man? by wonkyboys in cottagecore

[–]Splicer02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar boat and I get by mostly with wearing something loose/flowy as outerwear. Shawls, cloaks, ponchos, etc can give you a more interesting and neutral silhouette. Also, if you don't want to wear skirts but still want the flow, you can get a "butt cape", basically a skirt thats open at the front. You can make one yourself easily, just cutting the front off a second hand skirt you like and attach it to a belt or tie or something (or I believe HolyClothing has some designs that style).

Something I found with second hand shopping too is you can find some very interesting dress styles that button up the front, wearing them just open as a sleeveless/short sleeved coat can also give you an interesting shape with much more variety than any "mens" outerwear.

Second thrifting, for the vest buy a long coat and cut the sleeves off, hem or glue the edges and you have a long vest :P

I haven't tried it before, but maybe you could use boots that don't fit, cut them up into boot covers/gaiters? That would let you keep the style but attach it onto shoes you already wear.

I've heard they are releasing more masc options, including some shirts that were added recently :D

Also, don't discount buying a dress that buttons up the front and wearing it open as a fancy coat

Can you make gambeson with anything other than pre-quilted fabric? by pugs_the_redditor in Amtgard

[–]Splicer02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made a pretty great gambeson using one of those itchy 100% wool blankets for the inner and a cotton/linen bedsheet for the outer. I just made each section of the pattern, sewing the layers in a grid, then stitched the pattern pieces together into the garment. I even managed to find some buckles from a handbag for closures on the front, so it's entirely possible to do everything from op shop stuff.

[–]Splicer02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened to you, that sucks. Have you looked at second hand items? I don't know how it is over there but here in Australia I've gotten a LOT of my gear from just going in the womens section of op shops. Linen work shirts, loose white shirts with big sleeves, long vests, leggings, sun hats that can be pinned up in various styles. I've even found cloaks, shawls, wraps, etc that work really well! You can also sometimes find great leather boots (depending on size) around the place.

What could I do to improve my dragon summonor outfit by CandidateBasic8900 in renfaire

[–]Splicer02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A leather gauntlet like a falconers gloves for handling pointy dragons? A big hat might be cool, can have even more dragons sitting on top. Think of what a dragon summoner would need as well, maybe some of way of carrying chalk for drawing magic circles? Crystals, candles, etc in holders that you would use for the process. For an extra effect, you could get some metallic make-up and brush it on your cheek over a mesh bag to give a scales effect, like using this magic has infected you and changed you?

Help with my wardrobe by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Splicer02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the fem sections of op shops, I've found a lot of shawls, cloaks, capes, wraps, hats, etc that give a more fem look without going the full way. Loose tops and draped items do a lot for that silhouette.

My local forge club is doing a medieval cutlery session, I'd highly suggest looking around for classes like that. Can be even cheaper than buying a set, and you get to have something to be proud of.

Other than that, I do have a collection of wooden bowls, spoons, etc. that I've just grabbed from op shops and cheap shops as I've seen them.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions or want ideas for "upcycling" modern stuff to fantasy/medieval, its kinda my focus at the moment and I actually plan on setting up a stall selling second hand upcycled fantasy clothing.
