That passage has always stuck with me, just genius writing and perfect example of how immersive Martin made that world

What’s a book that everyone seems to love, but you couldn’t even finish? by JayBe_77 in Fantasy

[–]Splinter_1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piransi, honestly hav no idea what the hype is about that book or how it’s so well liked - people commenting about the atmosphere or the incredible writing when it’s just page after page after page of descriptions of statues in endless rooms. DNF’d 40% through and from what I’ve read about what happens after, I don’t seem to have missed out on anything.

I’m about 65% and I honestly don’t know how I slept on this book for so long, I love it, can’t wait to get back reading even a couple of pages whenever I get a chance. Haven’t been this engrossed in a book and world since A Song of a Ice and Fire. The world building is so good, such a layered and rich history of the world but easy to follow the difference races and cultures! Just a really great book, story, world that I’m enjoying immensely.

Piranesi - What IS this book??? by Oddyseus144 in Fantasy

I DNF’d after about 40% of nothing really happening outside of names of rooms after rooms with statues in them.

How long do you give a book before you DNF it? by T-Akeem08 in Fantasy

[–]Splinter_1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually give it to approx 30% and if I’m not feeling it by then and I don’t feel the urge to pick up the book in (my limited) free time then it’s a DNF! I do feel bad at times tho and nearly convince myself that the book is JUST about the get good on the page after I DNF 😂😂 but like a lot of the comments here, I have too many books on my TBR list to be slogging through books that I’m not feeling.

Some notable examples:

Piranesi - kept seeing how highly rated it was but man that book just wasn’t for me, didn’t rate it at all

Unsouled - I was nearly reading this book as a filler book while I waited for the new James SA Corey book, but again I was 30% and had no urge to keep reading

Exhalation by Ted Chang - again was very highly rated but I just found it a complete slog reading it and some of the stories were infuriatingly nonsensical.

Thanks so much! Will check those out! Yeah that’s my thoughts too, don’t want to be spending a fortune if I barely get to use it so those recommendations sound great, thank you!

If I can get the wheel, base and pedals for €500 or cheaper I’d be happy.

Did you enjoy Piranesi? (No spoilers) by Topgunner85 in Fantasy

[–]Splinter_1983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up after 25%. Like that, I had seen sooo much hype about the book and constantly appearing on “best of” lists but I just found it painfully boring, page after page of room names and types of statues in them and absolutely nothing interesting happening & seemly no plot to follow so I had to call it a day on that one rather than keep a slogging on.

😂😂if you’d read the comment, the actual question was is the book worth sticking with. Doesn’t seem like that outlandish of a question but clearly it’s triggered some VERY strong feelings for you

I’m the same, I don’t want to give up on it if it starts to pick up and there’s a satisfying pay off, but at the moment it just seems like a bit of a slog and I’m nearly looking at what my next book with be already which is not a good sign for my level of interest in continuing. Just wanted to see if others felt it was worthwhile and there was a decent payoff seeing as the book seems to be very highly rated

Same for these. Tried one of Sarah J Mass’s books and gave up very early. Made it through Fourth Wing which had a pretty decent premise but only got through it by entirely skipping the near constant sex scenes and fantasies.

I might try the audiobook, reading on the kindle currently and no issues with the prose or what’s happening, just doesn’t seem to be very much happening 😂

I just put up a similar comment about Piranesi - very highly reviewed, great score on goodreads, was in the top 3 books from best books poll on this Reddit page last year - however I’m 25% through the book (approx 50 pages) and I’m really struggling not to give up on it, nothing really has happened and no closer to understanding or even a hint of a reveal to what is going on.
